Hierdie manuskrip was nie bedoel om gepubliseer te word nie. Dit was aanvanklik ’n bestekopname van die skrywer se betrokkenheid by en blootstelling aan die NG Kerk-familie waarin hy gebore is, grootgeword en uiteindelik as predikant gedien het. Ben du Toit se eerste boek, God? Geloof in ‘n postmoderne tyd, is in 2001 met die gesogte Andrew Murray-prys vir Christelike publikasies bekroon. Dit het ’n woordeskat gebied vir talle ander mense se reis. Amper twee dekades later neem hy die vraag oor God en die relevansie van godsdiens en geloof verder. Vir baie mense sal hierdie boek nie ’n gemaklike leeservaring wees nie. Daar sal egter lesers wees wat ’n eie bevrydende ervaring in hul verhouding met die kerk, geloof en met God sal beleef deur die boek te lees. En wat ’n woordeskat sal vind. Net soos Du Toit se eerste boek baie mense minder alleen met hulle teologiese ongemak en kritiese vrae laat voel het, kan hierdie boek ’n wonderlike verrassende volgende fase van hul lewens inlei, soos dit tans met die skrywer die geval is. Die afronding van die teks het plaasgevind aan die begin van die wêreldwye Covid-19-pandemie. Hierdie boek toon hoe die vraag na die betrokkenheid van God gevra word, net soos telkens in die verlede tydens ander krisisse. Net soos wat die Covid-19-pandemie ’n nuwe era inlui, kan hierdie publikasie ’n nuwe denkraamwerk ten opsigte van geloof inlui. Hier word baie name genoem en na vele stemme geluister. Uiteindelik gaan dit nie oor hulle as individue nie, maar wel, kollektief, oor Die Kerk – ’n bepaalde verteenwoordiging van die verskynsel wat Godsdiens genoem word. Maar inderwaarheid gaan dit nie eers oor hulle nie, maar oor God – terwyl die enigste manier waarop ons iets van God kan weet, deur die woorde en lewens van mense is.
