Diane knew nothing about the Spanish Civil War, and the only thing
she knew about the dictator Franco was that Alberto, the worldly,
successful Spanish engineer she wanted to marry, called him
"benevolent." Set in the 1960s and 70s, the adventure of this
Spanish/American marriage during the final years of the Franco
regime could only be told by someone who lived it. And for the most
part loved it. Diane filled her letters home with happy anecdotes
about affectionate in-laws, a fascinating language, the Byzantine
bureaucracy, and doormen she thought were out to get her. But
underneath the comfortable exterior lingered vague images of
Franco's police and ghosts of the Civil War—the war no one spoke
about, or mentioned only superficially, except for Alberto, who had
recounted his harrowing experience as a teenager fleeing the siege
of Madrid. It was Alberto's increasingly alarming behavior that
made her fear for her marriage, and ultimately made her fear for
the safety of her daughters. When she saw no other way out, she
dealt with the fear the only way she knew how. The story is told
with humor and heartache and an enduring love for Spain.
Human-computer interaction studies the users and their interaction
with an interactive software system (ISS). However, these studies
are designed for people without any type of disability, causing
there to be few existing techniques or tools that focus on the
characteristics of a specific user, thus causing accessibility and
utility issues for neglected segments of the population. This
reference source intends to remedy this lack of research by
supporting an ISS focused on people with visual impairment.
User-Centered Software Development for the Blind and Visually
Impaired: Emerging Research and Opportunities is a collection of
innovative research on techniques, applications, and methods for
carrying out software projects in which the main users are people
with visual impairments. While highlighting topics including mobile
technology, assistive technologies, and human-computer interaction,
this book is ideally designed for software developers, computer
engineers, designers, academics, researchers, professionals, and
educators interested in current research on usable and accessible
technologies.
This edited volume examines the use of militarised responses to
different forms of criminal activity, discussing the outcomes and
unintended consequences. Politicians and policymakers frequently
use militarised responses to look tough on crime. The deployment of
armies, navies, military assets and militarised approaches can send
a powerful message, but have produced mixed results. While they
generate the perception that governments are actively engaged on
issues of concern to the public, and in some cases have resulted in
notable successes, on the downside they have frequently also
increased the loss of life, exacerbated the humanitarian
consequences of a particular crime and entrenched divides between
security and state institutions and the criminal proponents,
narrowing the possibilities for future negotiated solutions. By
focusing on four different areas of criminality - wildlife crime,
piracy, migration and drug trafficking - the book allows context
and evidence-based conclusions to be drawn on the strategic value
and commonality of responses and their outcomes.
Things have changed. In 1969 when the Convention for the
Conservation of the Vicuna was drafted, in an attempt to save the
vicuna from its tumbling decline towards extinction, both the
science and the philosophy of wildlife conservation were radically
different. It is thus a tribute to the prescience of those involved
at the time that the rescue plan had, even through the harsh lens
of hindsight, a d- tinctly Twenty First Century flavour. After all,
it was predicated on the expectation that if vicuna could be saved,
they would one day become a valued asset, generating revenue for
the human communities that fostered their survival. Embodied in
this aspiration are the main structures of modern biodiversity
conservation - not only is it to be underpinned by science, but
that science should be of both the natural and the social genres,
woven into inter-disciplinarity, and thereby taking heed of e-
nomics, governance, ownership and the like, alongside biology. In
addition, it should include, as a major strut, the human dimension,
taking account of the affected constituencies with their varied
stakes in alternative outcomes. This c- temporary framework for
thinking about biodiversity conservation is inseparable from such
wider, and inherently political, notions as community-based conser-
tion and ultimately sustainable use.

The works of J.RR. Tolkien have not only redefined a genre of
literature and had a far-reaching impact on culture in the late
twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, but his name has joined
the ranks of authors such as Shakespeare, Milton, Dostoevsky,
Donne, and Dickens—authors who make us think differently about
the world, including the creator of the world and the meaning of
life. In Theology and Tolkien: Practical Theology, an international
group of scholars consider what Tolkien’s works (and Jackson’s
interpretations) can teach us about living out our theology in the
world. From essays on Tolkien’s insights into community, what we
can learn about our spiritual senses from encounters with the
Nazgûl, the pastoral wisdom of Treebeard, and the theological
value of food—including second breakfasts—we invite you to
journey with us through Middle-earth as we engage the applicability
of Tolkien’s works for theology and our world.

After Star Trek: Enterprise concluded in 2005, Star Trek went on
hiatus until the 2009 film Star Trek and its sequels. With the
success of these films, Star Trek returned to the small screen with
series like Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds. These films
and series, in different ways, reflect cultural shifts in Western
society. Theology and Star Trek gathers a group of scholars from
various religious and theological disciplines to reflect upon the
connection between theology and Star Trek anew. The essays in part
one, “These are the Voyages,” explore the overarching themes of
Star Trek and the thought of its creator, Gene Roddenberry. Part
two, “Strange New Worlds,” discusses politics and technology.
Part three, “To Explore and to Seek,” focuses on issues related
to practice and formation. Part four, “To Boldly Go,”
contemplates the future of Star Trek.

chapters exploring plasmodesmata architectures and distribution in
cell interfaces, approaches to dissect plasmodesmata composition,
protocols to quantify changes in plasmodesmata permeability using
fluorescent tracers and mobile proteins, as well as a section with
protocols that contribute to plasmodesmata research but fall
outside the previous classifications. Written for the highly
successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include
introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary
materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible
laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding
known pitfalls. Authoritative and up-to-date, Plasmodesmata:
Methods and Protocols, Second Edition serves as a vital guide for
all plant scientists, both novice and expert, especially those
studying the intricacies of cell-to-cell communication pathways.
