Researchers' knowledge of gliomas continues to advance rapidly at both the basic and translational levels, and Gliomas provides a thorough overview of the evolving fields of tumor biology and clinical medicine as they relate to our understanding of brain tumors. Gliomas reviews the current paradigms that underlie these fields, beginning with the molecular epidemiology of glioma susceptibility and prognosis through population-based science and genome-wide association studies. The book's discussion of imaging modalities extends beyond advances in anatomical imaging to include metabolic and physiological studies. This work provides thorough discussion of the clinical view of tumors, ranging from the presentation of the patient to surgical management, and covers all therapeutic options for patient care, including chemotherapy, targeted molecular therapies, immunotherapies, and even personalized approaches to impact the set of lesions. Additionally, the book discusses radiotherapy with regard to the many options available to treat patients using myriad fractionated techniques with various sources. Finally, Gliomas reviews issues specific to the quality of life for patients, and techniques for maximizing the effect of caregivers. Edited and authored by premier researchers from around the world, Gliomas is a comprehensive reference for clinicians and researchers seeking the most up-to-date information on gliomas, and a guide to the best ways to effectively manage glioma patients and their care.
Although recognized as a key to the design process, prototyping
often falls victim to budget cuts, deadlines, or lack of access to
sophisticated tools. This can lead to sloppy and ineffective
prototypes or the abandonment of them altogether. Rather than lose
this important step, people are turning to Microsoft Excel(r) to
create effective, simple, and inexpensive prototypes. Conveniently,
the software is available to nearly everyone, and most are
proficient in its basic functionality.
At first glance, Orthodox Judaism is not compatible with the prevailing world view of equal treatment for all people, regardless of their race, gender or religion. But modern Orthodox Jews share the sense that egalitarianism is a positive moral value, so they cannot simply dismiss this contemporary ethos as incompatible with their faith. In a range of ways and variety of perspectives from the leading Orthodox scholars in the field, this collection of essays explores the affinities and disaffinities between egalitarianism and Jewish tradition.
"Zutot: Perspectives on Jewish Culture" aims to fill a gap that has become more and more conspicuous among the wealth of scholarly periodicals in the field of Jewish Studies. Whereas existing journals provide space to medium - and large sized articles, they neglect the small but poignant contributions, which may be as important as the extended, detailed study. The yearbook "Zutot" serves as a platform for small but incisive contributions, and provides them with a distinct context. The substance of these contributions is derived from larger perspectives and, though not always presented in an exhaustive way, will have an impact on contemporary discussions. "Zutot" covers Jewish Culture in its broadest sense, i.e. encompassing various academic disciplines - literature, languages and linguistics, philosophy, art, sociology, politics and history - and reflects binary oppositions such as religious and secular, high and low, written and oral, male and female culture.
Thinking, Childhood, and Time: Contemporary Perspectives on the Politics of Education is an interdisciplinary exploration of the notion of childhood and its place in a philosophical education. Contributors consider children's experiences of time, space, embodiment, and thinking. By acknowledging Hannah Arendt's notion that every child brings a new beginning into the world, they address the question of how educators can be more responsive to the Otherness that childhood offers, while assuming that most educational models follow either a chronological model of child development or view children as human beings that are lacking. This book explores childhood as a philosophical concept in children, adults, and even beyond human beings-Childhood as a (forgotten) dimension of the world. Contributors also argue that a pedagogy that does not aim for an "exodus of childhood," but rather responds to the arrival of a new human being responsibly (dialogically), fosters a deeper appreciation of the newness that children bring in order to sensitize us for our own Childhood as adults as well and allow us to welcome other forms of childhood in the world. As a whole, this book argues that the experience of natality, such as the beginning of life, is not chronologically determined, but rather can occur more than once in a human life and beyond. Scholars of philosophy, education, psychology, and childhood studies will find this book particularly useful.
"This visual - and artistically beautiful - format differentiates Einstein: The Man And His Mind from all previous books about him" - Amazon reader review "Gary Berger and Michael DiRuggerio's photographic exploration of Einstein is a indubitably a coffee table book, but in its highest form. It's huge (34 x 26 cm) and contains a collection of beautiful imagery." “massive, well-produced ... Some of these images are striking photographs of Einstein, a good few of which I've never seen before.” "the kind of small, but interesting contribution to the Einstein story we can find here." "a remarkable book…. I've never seen anything quite like it... a fascinating find.” - https://popsciencebooks.blogspot.com Albert Einstein is known by name and image throughout the world to people of all ages. He is probably the most well-known scientist of all time. Even though most people have only a vague idea of what he did, the attraction remains. The raison d'être for this book is to convey a sense of familiarity with Einstein as a real person and with the essence of his contributions. This is accomplished through annotated full-page photographs of Einstein that tell the story of his scientific life. The book is written for the general public. It may appeal to Einstein scholars as well. This visual - and artistically beautiful - format differentiates Einstein: The Man And His Mind from all previous books about him. The images (mostly signed portrait photos) are supplemented by a selection of 53 rare letters, manuscripts, books, journals 51 original rare portraits 4 equations in Einstein's handwriting provided by what is likely the largest private Einstein collection in existence. This project has the support of two private US foundations The Sterling Foundation and The Antonia & Vladimer Kulaev Cultural Heritage Fund, Inc. All royalties will be donated to the Albert Einstein Archives at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Conference of Abstract State Machines, B and Z, ABZ 2008, held in London, UK, in September 2008. The conference simultaneously incorporated the 15th International ASM Workshop, the 17th International Conference of Z Users and the 8th International Conference on the B Method. The 44 revised full papers presented together with 4 invited contributions were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The conference fosters the cross-fertilization of three rigorous methods for the design and analysis of hardware and software systems - both in academia and industry - namely Abstract State Machines, B, and Z. Covering a wide range of research spanning from theoretical and methodological foundations to tool support and practical applications, the contributions are organized in topical sections on abstract state machines, B papers, Z papers, ABZ short papers, and the papers of the Verified Software Repository Network (VSR-net) workshop.
Essays in this volume analyze the fundamental macroeconomic and political structures of contemporary society. Studies by Piore examine the labor market and its relationship to technological innovation and capital investment; studies by Berger explore the social foundation of political parties and the formation of state policy as it emerges from competitive political forces.
This revision of a classic volume presents state-of-the-art reviews of established and emerging areas of communication science and provides an intellectual compass that points the way to future theorizing about communication processes. In this Second Edition of The Handbook of Communication Science, editors Charles R. Berger, Michael E. Roloff, and David Roskos-Ewoldsen bring together an impressive array of communication scholars to explore and synthesize the varying perspectives and approaches within the dynamic field of communication science. After first addressing the methods of research and the history of the field, the Handbook then examines the levels of analysis in communication (individual to macro-social), the functions of communication (such as socialization and persuasion), and the contexts in which communication occurs (such as couples, families, organizations, and mass media). Key Features: Draws on the scholarship and expertise of leading communication scholars who explore different aspects of the field Covers all facets of communication science, from the historical and theoretical to the practical and applied Covers the latest theoretical developments in the field, as well as alternative methodologies and levels of analysis Explores key communication contexts of the 21st century, including interpersonal dimensions of health communication, the scientific investigation of marital and family communication, and computer-mediated communication Includes incisive analyses, literature reviews, bibliographies, and suggestions for future research The Handbook of Communication Science, Second Edition, is an essential reference resource for scholars, practitioners, and students. It is appropriate for upper-level undergraduate or graduate courses in Communication and Media Studies and Mass Communication.
Gaining access is a critical part of doing research, not only because one must get in in order to gain information but also because the quality of access affects what information is available to the researcher. Despite the importance of getting in, the literature on qualitative methods has not yet provided an extended treatment of the issues surrounding access. This book fills this void by offering useful, prescriptive advice on how to gain access in the field. The methodological guidelines are reinforced in a diverse collection of stories written by expert contributors from various disciplinary backgrounds. The case studies involve a wide variety of settings, from working with Bosnian ethnic minorities, to American sex workers, prisons, welfare offices and the clergy. Collectively they provide examples of how researchers can work with individual, organisational, and institutional contexts, and illuminates the process for gaining access for interviewing, observation, and participation. As an ideal guide through the practical and conceptual complexities of gaining access in fieldwork, this will be of value both to experienced researchers as well as those conducting their first s
Originally published in 1980, the essays in this volume analyse a family of phenomena in advanced industrial societies for which neither liberal nor Marxist theories provide a systematic explanation. Berger and Piore argue that these phenomena represent a structural solution to the economic and political problems of distributing economic uncertainty and preserving political stability. The discontinuities in industrial societies are not the product of incomplete modernisation but of political and economic choices that perpetuate and recreate segmentation to protect critical political and economic mechanisms. Studies by Piore examine the labour market and its relationship to technological innovation and capital investment, whilst those by Berger explore the social foundation of political parties and the formation of state policy as it emerges from competitive political forces.

One doesn't have to be Jewish to recognize the words which have made their way into every fold of popular language: Chutzpah, Mensch, Tokhes, Mishmash, Nudge, Shtick, Schmaltzy, Schlep, Icky, and so on. Then there are phrases whose meaning and syntax are borrowed from Yiddish: "bite your tongue," "drop dead," "enough already', and "excuse the expression." This hilarious, concise guide includes chapters on the Basic Descriptions of People (the good, the bad, the ugly, and the goofy), the Fine Art of Cursing, Juicy Words and Phrases, Exclamations and Exasperations, and the Fine Art of Blessing.
Hie
