This book contributes to the understanding of Dionysos, the Greek
god of wine, dancing, theatre and ecstasy, by putting together 30
studies of classical scholars. They combine the analysis of
specific instances of particular dimensions of the god in cult,
myth, literature and iconography, with general visions of Dionysos
in antiquity and modern times. Only from the combination of
different perspectives can we grasp the complex personality of
Dionysos, and the forms of his presence in different cults,
literary genres, and artistic forms, from Mycenaean times to late
antiquity. The ways in which Dionysos was experienced may vary in
each author, each cult, and each genre in which this god is
involved. Therefore, instead of offering a new all-encompassing
theory that would immediately become partial, the book narrows the
focus on specific aspects of the god. Redefinition does not mean
finding (again) the essence of the god, but obtaining a more
nuanced knowledge of the ways he was experienced and conceived in
antiquity.

Walt Whitman and His Caribbean Interlocutors: Jose Marti, C.L.R.
James, and Pedro Mir explores the writings of Whitman (1819-1892)
and of three Caribbean authors who engaged with them. These three
interlocutors-the Cuban poet, essayist and revolutionary Jose Marti
(1853-1895); the Trinidadian activist, historian and cultural
critic C.L.R. James (1901-1989); and the Dominican poet Pedro Mir
(1913-2000-all saw in the famous American poet and pacifist a key
lens through which to understand North American capitalism and is
imperial projections. Whitman and his Caribbean interlocutors are
discussed against the backdrop of capitalist modernity's
contradictions, as exemplified by the United States between the
1840s and the 1940s. Bernabe deftly uses Marx's exploration of the
liberating and oppressive dimensions of capitalist expansion to
frame his discussion of each individual author and of Marti's,
James's, and Mir's responses to Whitman.
Adaptive Resonance Theory Microchips describes circuit strategies
resulting in efficient and functional adaptive resonance theory
(ART) hardware systems. While ART algorithms have been developed in
software by their creators, this is the first book that addresses
efficient VLSI design of ART systems. All systems described in the
book have been designed and fabricated (or are nearing completion)
as VLSI microchips in anticipation of the impending proliferation
of ART applications to autonomous intelligent systems. To
accommodate these systems, the book not only provides circuit
design techniques, but also validates them through experimental
measurements. The book also includes a chapter tutorially
describing four ART architectures (ART1, ARTMAP, Fuzzy-ART and
Fuzzy-ARTMAP) while providing easily understandable MATLAB code
examples to implement these four algorithms in software. In
addition, an entire chapter is devoted to other potential
applications for real-time data clustering and category learning.
Cellular Genetic Algorithms defines a new class of optimization
algorithms based on the concepts of structured populations and
Genetic Algorithms (GAs). The authors explain and demonstrate the
validity of these cellular genetic algorithms throughout the book.
This class of genetic algorithms is shown to produce impressive
results on a whole range of domains, including complex problems
that are epistatic, multi-modal, deceptive, discrete, continuous,
multi-objective, and random in nature. The focus of this book is
twofold. On the one hand, the authors present new algorithmic
models and extensions to the basic class of Cellular GAs in order
to tackle complex problems more efficiently. On the other hand,
practical real world tasks are successfully faced by applying
Cellular GA methodologies to produce workable solutions of
real-world applications. These methods can include local search
(memetic algorithms), cooperation, parallelism, multi-objective,
estimations of distributions, and self-adaptive ideas to extend
their applicability. The methods are benchmarked against well-known
metaheutistics like Genetic Algorithms, Tabu Search, heterogeneous
GAs, Estimation of Distribution Algorithms, etc. Also, a publicly
available software tool is offered to reduce the learning curve in
applying these techniques. The three final chapters will use the
classic problem of vehicle routing and the hot topics of ad-hoc
mobile networks and DNA genome sequencing to clearly illustrate and
demonstrate the power and utility of these algorithms.

Due to increasing demand for potable and irrigation water, water
suppliers have to use alternative resources. They either have to
regenerate wastewater or deal with contaminated surface water. This
book brings together the experiences of various experts in
preparing of innovative materials that are selective for arsenic
and chromium removal, and inventing some innovative processes to
extract these elements from water. The book should be of high
interest to engineers and decision-makers responsible for
production and delivery of safe water. The book is divided into
three parts. The first one shows the effect of arsenic and chromium
ions on living organisms. The second one presents the studies on
preparation of innovative materials with improved affinity towards
arsenic as well as chromium. The third part shows the innovative
methods for removal of these toxic elements, with special attention
paid to chromatographic, membrane, and hybrid systems. The book is
the first ever scientific work addressed to two most harmful
elements appearing in water and provides a comprehensive review of
materials and methods useful for making the water safe. The book
discusses in detail the various fabrication techniques for sorbents
and membranes that are now commercially available or appear in the
development stage and will be commercialized in the next decades.
Some of the technologies described in the third part will be
implemented at the industrial scale in the future as well.
Cybersecurity and Privacy issues are becoming an important barrier
for a trusted and dependable global digital society development.
Cyber-criminals are continuously shifting their cyber-attacks
specially against cyber-physical systems and IoT, since they
present additional vulnerabilities due to their constrained
capabilities, their unattended nature and the usage of potential
untrustworthiness components. Likewise, identity-theft, fraud,
personal data leakages, and other related cyber-crimes are
continuously evolving, causing important damages and privacy
problems for European citizens in both virtual and physical
scenarios. In this context, new holistic approaches, methodologies,
techniques and tools are needed to cope with those issues, and
mitigate cyberattacks, by employing novel cyber-situational
awareness frameworks, risk analysis and modeling, threat
intelligent systems, cyber-threat information sharing methods,
advanced big-data analysis techniques as well as exploiting the
benefits from latest technologies such as SDN/NFV and Cloud
systems. In addition, novel privacy-preserving techniques, and
crypto-privacy mechanisms, identity and eID management systems,
trust services, and recommendations are needed to protect citizens'
privacy while keeping usability levels. The European Commission is
addressing the challenge through different means, including the
Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation program, thereby financing
innovative projects that can cope with the increasing cyberthreat
landscape. This book introduces several cybersecurity and privacy
research challenges and how they are being addressed in the scope
of 15 European research projects. Each chapter is dedicated to a
different funded European Research project, which aims to cope with
digital security and privacy aspects, risks, threats and
cybersecurity issues from a different perspective. Each chapter
includes the project's overviews and objectives, the particular
challenges they are covering, research achievements on security and
privacy, as well as the techniques, outcomes, and evaluations
accomplished in the scope of the EU project. The book is the result
of a collaborative effort among relative ongoing European Research
projects in the field of privacy and security as well as related
cybersecurity fields, and it is intended to explain how these
projects meet the main cybersecurity and privacy challenges faced
in Europe. Namely, the EU projects analyzed in the book are:
ANASTACIA, SAINT, YAKSHA, FORTIKA, CYBECO, SISSDEN, CIPSEC,
CS-AWARE. RED-Alert, Truessec.eu. ARIES, LIGHTest, CREDENTIAL,
FutureTrust, LEPS. Challenges in Cybersecurity and Privacy - the
European Research Landscape is ideal for personnel in
computer/communication industries as well as academic staff and
master/research students in computer science and communications
networks interested in learning about cyber-security and privacy
aspects.

Testbeds are gaining increasing relevance in research domains and
also in industrial applications. However, very few books devoted to
testbeds have been published. To the best of my knowledge no book
on this topic has been published. This book is particularly
interesting for the growing community of testbed developers. I
believe the book is also very interesting for researchers in
robot-WSN cooperation. This book provides detailed description of a
system that can be considered the first testbed that allows full
peer-to-peer interoperability between heterogeneous robots and
ubiquitous systems such as Wireless Sensor Networks, camera
networks and pervasive computing systems. The system architecture
includes modules that allows full bidirectional communication
between robots and WSN. One robot can The book describes the
current state of the art in development of testbeds integrating
Cooperating Object technologies. It describes in detail the testbed
specification and design using requirements extracted from surveys
among experts in robotics and ubiquitous systems in academia and
industry. The book also describes the testbed novel architecture
and its hardware and software components. Moreover, it includes
details on user support tools to facilitate its use such as remote
use using a virtual private network and sets of functionalities of
interest for members from the robotics, WSN and robot-WSN
communities. Finally, the book illustrates its capabilities and
potentialities describing the implementation of some of the
experiments that have been performed. Examples from the robotics,
WSN and robot-WSN communities are described.

well as a self-contained primary reference book for these
algorithms.

The present book is a compilation of studies on narratives of
mythical origins in different cultures written by outstanding
specialists. It aims to provide a broad view on creation-myths from
different times and areas of the world with a particular focus on
how these texts contributed to the conception of the past as
"universal history", as a common origin of mankind or as the great
opening, the theatrum mundi. On the other hand, the purpose of this
book is to study the phenomenon from a typological point of view,
analyzing the specific characteristics of this particular type of
texts, rather than finding influences between the different
cultures in the genesis of these narratives.
