The volume "Modern Information Processing: From Theory to Applications," edited by Bernadette Bouchon-Meunier, Giulianella Coletti and Ronald Yager, is a collection of carefully selected papers drawn from the program of IPMU'04, which was held in Perugia, Italy.

As we stand at the precipice of the twenty first century the ability to capture and transmit copious amounts of information is clearly a defining feature of the human race. In order to increase the value of this vast supply of information we must develop means for effectively processing it. Newly emerging disciplines such as Information Engineering and Soft Computing are being developed in order to provide the tools required. This book presents a topical selection of full refereed research papers presented during the 5th International Conference on Information Processing and Management of Uncertainty in Knowledge-Based Systems, IPMU '94, held in Paris, France in July 1994. The topical focus is on the role of uncertainty in the contruction of intelligent computing systems and it is shown how the concepts of AI, neural networks, and fuzzy logic can be utilized for that purpose.

The papers in this volume are extended versions of presentations at the fourth International Conference on Information Processing and Management of Uncertainty in Knowledge-based Systems (IPMU), held in Palma de Mallorca, July 6-10, 1992. The conference focused on issues related to the acquisition, representation, management, and transmission of information in knowledge-based and decision-making systems. The book is focused on methodologies related to artificial intelligence, including both theoretical and applied papers. The first section of the book is devoted to non-monotonic reasoning and the managementof default knowledge. The second section deals with methods using non-classical logics to deal with imperfect knowledge and to represent its spatial and temporal components. The third section presents various methods for the acquisition of uncertain and imprecise knowledge. The fourthsection is concerned with the use of qualitative, uncertain, temporal, and ambiguous pieces of information in knowledge-based systems, expert systems, and process controllers. The last section contains papers using artificial neural network methodologies.

The management and processing of uncertain information has shown itself to be a crucial issue in the development of intelligent systems, beginning withits appearance in the such systems as Mycin and Prospector. The papers in this volume reflect the current range of interests or researchers in thefield. Currently, the major approaches to uncertainty include fuzzy set theory, probabilistic methods, mathematical theory of evidence, non-standardlogics such as default reasoning, and possibility theory. The initial part of the volume is devoted to papers dealing with the foundations of these approaches, where recent attempts have been made to develop systems combining multiple approaches. A significant part of the book looks at the management of uncertainty in a number of the paradigmatic domainsof intelligent systems such as expert systems, decision making, databases, image processing, and reasoning networks.
