“I had endured enough spaghetti arms and failed take-offs to last a lifetime. I wanted to, once again, move forward with my surfing. It took a simple idea to make that a reality”

Death of a Weekend Warrior is the story of Bernard’s surfing journey. It describes the highs, lows, people, places, and waves he has experienced over the past thirty years. For Bernard, a weekend warrior represents a plateauing of performance, a stagnation. The death of a weekend warrior represents his progression and development.

In this book, Katz unpacks his own insecurities and reflects on the many facets that make up the world of the average weekend surfer. His personal journey is intertwined with descriptions of famous surf spots and explanations of some of the nuances of surfing, localism, surfboard design, the art of tube riding, and more.

This symposium entitled Calcium, Neuronal Function and Transmitter Re lease, was in the framework of the regional meeting of the International Union of Physiological Sciences, that took place in Jerusalem between August 26-31, 1984. The symposium dealt with the role of calcium ions in regulation of a large number of important processes in modern neurobiology, from molecular and cellular points of view. In this context, we consider heart and most cells as 'honorary neurons'. The meeting was comprised of lectures and quite intense discussions. We hope that the transcription of the discussions which follow the articles will give the reader a feeling of the intense, but pleasant atmosphere that per vaded during this symposium. It is our pleasure to thank Mrs. Miriam Silber, the assistant editor of this book, for her hard work in transcribing the discussions, retyping large portions of the book, and getting the approval of the authors. We express our thanks to Dr. Halina Meiri and Dr. Simona Ginsburg for their editorial assis tance. The unfailing help of Ms. Rachel Klein and Ms. Shoshana Wineberg is greatly appreciated. xxvii SECTION 1 CALCIUM CHANNELS, TRANSPORTERS & CALCIUM REGULATED CHANNELS EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE ON SINGLE CHANNEL AND WHOLE CELL Ca CURRENTS A. Chun Liu ambles into his shop and offers Jake a piece of Chinese heaven, a 13th Century oil on silk painting by Zheng Mengfu. While there's something oddly familiar about this Mr. Liu, it's just not there. The scroll has all provenances and signatures and has been signed off by the experts but go figure, Jake discovers what he believes to be a fatal flaw in the scrolls authenticity. And so begins Jake's Chinese adventure chasing Dr. Liu through the poetic and uniquely Chinese cities of Taipei, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Shuzou and Shanghai. Jake's range of encounters run from Pentecostals, an accusation of murder, to his meeting his devilish jailer when a prisoner in the Korean War and a garlic eating Chinese cop who puts the kibosh to Jake's future.
