Safety-Critical Real-Time Systems brings together in one place important contributions and up-to-date research results in this fast moving area. Safety-Critical Real-Time Systems serves as an excellent reference, providing insight into some of the most challenging research issues in the field.
This book takes a holistic view on mobile and distributed computing systems. It presents innovative solutions at all system layers. These range from hardware over vertical and horizontal infrastructure services and novel middleware techniques to various types of application software. Some chapters address core properties of ubiquitous applications including mobility, self-healing and self-organization of both technical and social-technical systems.
Some fishes test their environment by generating electric fields outside their bodies (man's first contact with electricity). To send and receive electric signals, one's own or those from a neighbor, is the basis of some bony fishes' unusual sensory capacities that enable them to lead a secret, nocturnal life. This volume provides the reader with a detailed account of these fishes' biology and behavior and their sophisticated sensory capacities. The phylogenetic relationships of the fish taxa involved are discussed as well as the physiology and anatomy of the electrosensory-motor-system and the integration to form an efficient intelligence system. The main emphasis is on the descriptive and experimental analysis of electric communication behavior in a variety of species, including studies of digital signal synthesis. Whenever possible, mechanisms of communication are indicated.
Primary purpose of the Advanced Research Workshop held in Liberec, Czech Republic, in November 1995 was to present and to discuss the main goals, contents, projects, partners, and implications of a proposed non profit European Research Network, which aims at establishing research nodes at key locations in European NATO and CP countries. In papers and contributions, individual and common projects and approaches were introduced and refined. All projects are directed to solutions for the heavily polluted "Black Triangle" Bohemia, Saxony, and Silesia, which was selected as a nucleus for the network because of its geographical location and cross border environmental problems. In several presentations the general strategy for tackling these critical problems were outlined. A number of contributions offered potential and model solutions for individual project parts, or new project ideas and ap proaches. Incorporation of heterogeneous environmental systems, computer based environmental planning, contaminated site assessment, and remedia tion technology selection were discussed as well as various descriptions and evaluations of contamination problems on industrial and military areas in connection with proposals and techniques for clean-up and recultivation. Examples for application of modern technologies in the conversion process were presented, e.g., recycling, incineration or supercritical oxidation. Fur ther contributions considered the necessities for knowledge availability and transfer as well as the future challenge of preventing any harmful influence on the environment.

The papers are organized in topical sections on Service Deployment, Business Process Design, Service Discovery, Quality of Service Support, Testing and Validation, Service Assembly, Service Properties, Service Modeling, SOA Composition/Experience/Runtime/Governance and QoS and Composite Service Support.
Collective intelligence has become an attractive subject of interest for both academia and industry. More and more conferences and workshops discuss the impact of the users' motivation to participate in the value creation process, the enabling role of leading-edge information and communication technologies and the need for better algorithms to deal with the growing amount of shared data. There are many interesting and challenging topics that need to be researched and discussed with respect to knowledge creation, creativity and innovation processes carried forward in the emerging communities of practice. COLLIN is on the path to become the flagship conference in the areas of collective intelligence and ICT-enabled social networking. We were delighted to again receive contributions from different parts of the world including Australia, Europe, Asia, and the United States. Encouraged by the positive response, we plan COLLIN 2012 to be held next year end of August at FernUniverstitat in Hagen. In order to guarantee the quality of the event, each paper went through a doubleblind review process. The reviews concentrated on originality, quality and relevance of the paper topic to the symposium. In addition, we invited a few renowned experts in the field to contribute to the success of the symposium with outstanding papers reporting on their most recent research. Our special thanks go to the authors for submitting their papers, to the international program committee members, and to numerous reviewers who did an excellent job in guaranteeing that the papers in this volume are of very high quality."
Welcome to the proceedings of the inaugural Symposium on Collective Intelligence (COLLIN 2010). This was the first of a new series of events that will evolve over the coming years, and we were happy to hold the event in Hagen where the idea for this symposium was born. The participants visited Hagen in April, with excellent opportunities to get rain, wind and sun. Collective intelligence denotes a phenomenon according to which the purposeful interaction between individuals creates intelligent solutions and behaviors that might not have come to existence without this concerted effort of a community. The members of such communities form a social network, typically over the Internet. They are engage with each other over a sustained period of time to develop an area of innovation through collaboration and exchange of ideas, experiences and information. Leading-edge information and communication technologies (ICT) offer ample opportunities for enabling collective intelligence. COLLIN aims to become the flagship conference in the areas collective intelligence and ICT-enabled social networking, which is attracting more and more researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry.
