European countries have faced profound changes in family structures and family forms over the last few decades. This volume provides insights from eleven European countries with varying welfare state arrangements, exploring the extent to which the intergenerational transmission of attitudes, resources and values matter with regard to the economic self-sufficiency of young people. Drawing on in-depth interviews with three generations of family members, the contributors show how intergenerational transmission happens and what the effects of these transmission processes are. The book reveals that family members serve as role models to younger family members and influence their career and educational aspirations, and that there are specific family value orientations and parental approaches which support economic self-sufficiency in younger generations. Intergenerational Transmission of Economic Self-Sufficiency will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines including social work, sociology, psychology and political sociology.

The core idea is that need-based distributive justice may have some legitimatory advantages over other important principles of distribution, like equality and equity, and therefore involves less dispute over the distribution and redistribution of scarce resources. In seven chapters, eleven scholars from the fields of philosophy, psychology, sociology, political science and economics outline the normative and positive building blocks of such a theory by critically reviewing the literature on distributive justice from their respective disciplinary perspectives. They address important theoretical and practical issues concerning the rationality of needs identification at the individual level and the recognition of needs at the societal level. They also investigate whether and how the dynamics of distribution procedures that allocate resources according to the need principle leads to social stability, focusing on the economic incentives that arise from need-based redistribution. The final chapter provides a synthesis and outlines a framework for a theory of justice based on ten hypotheses derived from the insights presented.

Die Studie untersucht den Zusammenhang von Sprachverwendung, sozialer Positionierung und kollektiver Identitatsbildung in Weissrussland hinsichtlich des Weissrussischen, Russischen und der weissrussisch-russisch gemischten Rede (Trasjanka). Die soziodemographische und oekonomische Struktur der drei "Kodes" wird mittels Umfrage und Interviews bei drei Generationen erfasst. Die Konstellation ist grundlegend diglossisch: Russisch herrscht im oeffentlichen Raum, die Trasjanka viel starker als bisher angenommen im privaten Bereich (besonders bei der alteren Generation). Weissrussisch ist voellig marginalisiert. Fur die spezifisch weissrussisch-kollektive Identitat, die durchaus festzustellen ist, spielt keiner der Kodes eine nennenswerte Rolle, bestenfalls das Weissrussische auf symbolisch-musealer Ebene.
