Brunello Terreni (1953-2000) was a researcher and teacher with vision and dedication. The present volume is dedicated to the memory of Brunello Terreni. His mathematical interests are reflected in 20 expository articles written by distinguished mathematicians. The unifying theme of the articles is "evolution equations and functional analysis," which is presented in various and diverse forms: parabolic equations, semigroups, stochastic evolution, optimal control, existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions, inverse problems as well as applications. This volume contains research articles from the field of Nonlinear Differential Equa tions which result from the "Workshop on Nonlinear Analysis and Applications" held in Bergamo on July 9 to 13, 200l. This workshop was the third edition of a meeting which first took place in Campinas in 1996 and was founded in part upon scientific cooperation, already well initiated, between some participants, on specific problems in Nonlinear Analysis, and in part upon the whish to extend such cooperation to other researchers and to other topics. The scientific collaboration between Italy and Brazil is not new; it dates back at least to the thirties, and includes, among others, the name of Luigi Fantappie, just to mention only one of the earliest Italians that developed part of their scien tific activity in Brazil. If the first workshop had mainly an informal character, the second, which took place in 1998 again in Campinas, already had the structure and the breath of a true international congress. At this point it was the Italians turn to organize the third meeting. The main purpose of the conference was to provide a forum for the discussion of recent work and modern trends in various fields of Nonlinear Analysis. About 130 researchers coming from 17 countries attended the conference."

This volume represents a broad survey of current research in the fields of nonlinear analysis and nonlinear differential equations. It is dedicated to Djairo G. de Figueiredo on the occasion of his 70th birthday. The collection of 34 research and survey articles reflects the wide range of interests of Djairo de Figueiredo, including:
- various types of nonlinear partial differential equations and systems, in particular equations of elliptic, parabolic, hyperbolic and mixed type;
- equations of SchrAdinger, Maxwell, Navier-Stokes, Bernoulli-Euler, Seiberg-Witten, Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg;
- existence, uniqueness and multiplicity of solutions;
- critical Sobolev growth and connected phenomena;
- qualitative properties, regularity and shape of solutions;
- inequalities, a-priori estimates and asymptotic behavior;
- various applications to models such as asymptotic membranes, nonlinear plates and inhomogeneous fluids.
The contributions of so many distinguished mathematicians to this volume document the importance and lasting influence of the mathematical research of Djairo de Figueiredo. The book thus is a source of new ideas and results and should appeal to graduate students and mathematicians interested in nonlinear problems.

A collection of research articles originating from the Workshop on Nonlinear Analysis and Applications held in Bergamo in July 2001.

Classical topics of nonlinear analysis were considered, such as calculus of variations, variational inequalities, critical point theory and their use in various aspects of the study of elliptic differential equations and systems, equations of Hamilton-Jacobi, Schrodinger and Navier-Stokes, and free boundary problems. Moreover, various models were focused upon: travelling waves in supported beams and plates, vortex condensation in electroweak theory, information theory, non-geometrical optics, and Dirac-Fock models for heavy atoms."

This volume of contributions pays tribute to the life and work of Djairo Guedes de Figueiredo on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The articles it contains were born out of the ICMC Summer Meeting on Differential Equations - 2014 Chapter, also dedicated to de Figueiredo and held at the Universidade de Sao Paulo at Sao Carlos, Brazil from February 3-7, 2014. The contributing authors represent a group of international experts in the field and discuss recent trends and new directions in nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations and systems. Djairo Guedes de Figueiredo has had a very active scientific career, publishing 29 monographs and over one hundred research articles. His influence on Brazilian mathematics has made him one of the pillars of the subject in that country. He had a major impact on the development of analysis, especially in its application to nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations and systems throughout the entire world. The articles collected here pay tribute to him and his legacy and are intended for graduate students and researchers in mathematics and related areas who are interested in nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations and systems.
