The books in this trilogy capture the foundational core of advanced informatics. The authors make the foundations accessible, enabling students to become effective problem solvers. This first volume establishes the inductive approach as a fundamental principle for system and domain analysis. After a brief introduction to the elementary mathematical structures, such as sets, propositional logic, relations, and functions, the authors focus on the separation between syntax (representation) and semantics (meaning), and on the advantages of the consistent and persistent use of inductive definitions. They identify compositionality as a feature that not only acts as a foundation for algebraic proofs but also as a key for more general scalability of modeling and analysis. A core principle throughout is invariance, which the authors consider a key for the mastery of change, whether in the form of extensions, transformations, or abstractions. This Festschrift, dedicated to Bengt Jonsson on the occasion of his 60th birthday, contains papers written by many of his friends and collaborators.Bengt has made major contributions covering a wide range of topics including verification and learning. His works on verification, in finite state systems, learning, testing, probabilistic systems, timed systems, and distributed systems reflect both the diversity and the depth of his research. Besides being an excellent scientist, Bengt is also a leader who has greatly influenced the careers of both his students and his colleagues. His main focus throughout his career has been in the area of formal methods, and the research papers dedicated to him in this volume address related topics, particularly related to model checking, temporal logic, and automata learning.

This volume contains a selection of revised papers that were presented at the Software Aspects of Robotic Systems, SARS 2011 Workshop and the Machine Learning for System Construction, MLSC 2011 Workshop, held during October 17-18 in Vienna, Austria, under the auspices of the International Symposium Series on Leveraging Applications of Formal Methods, Verification, and Validation, ISoLA. The topics covered by the papers of the SARS and the MLSC workshop demonstrate the breadth and the richness of the respective fields of the two workshops stretching from robot programming to languages and compilation techniques, to real-time and fault tolerance, to dependability, software architectures, computer vision, cognitive robotics, multi-robot-coordination, and simulation to bio-inspired algorithms, and from machine learning for anomaly detection, to model construction in software product lines to classification of web service interfaces. In addition the SARS workshop hosted a special session on the recently launched KOROS project on collaborating robot systems that is borne by a consortium of researchers of the faculties of architecture and planning, computer science, electrical engineering and information technology, and mechanical and industrial engineering at the Vienna University of Technology. The four papers devoted to this session highlight important research directions pursued in this interdisciplinary research project.

Computers are gaining more and more control over systems that we use or rely on in our daily lives, privately as well as professionally. In safety-critical applications, as well as in others, it is of paramount importance that systems controled by a computer or computing systems themselves reliably behave in accordance with the specification and requirements, in other words: here correctness of the system, of its software and hardware is crucial. In order to cope with this callenge, software engineers and computer scientists need to understand the foundations of programming, how different formal theories are linked together, how compilers correctly translate high-level programs into machine code, and why transformations performed are justifiable. This book presents 17 mutually reviewed invited papers organized in sections on methodology, programming, automation, compilation, and application.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Tools and Algorithms for the Construction and Analysis of Systems, TACAS'98, held in conjunction with ETAPS in Lisbon, Portugal, in March/April 1998. The 28 revised full papers presented together with an invited talk were selected from a total of 78 submissions.
