Legionnaire and Fighter Pilot
American soldier of fortune Bert Hall enlisted in the French
Foreign Legion-Deuxieme Regiment Etranger-which was on its way to
the front from Morocco, signing on for the duration of hostilities
just two days after the Great War broke out in 1914. He served in
the legion infantry, one of several welcome replacements from the
United States of America who filled the gaps in the Legion's ranks
created by the 1,800 German legionnaires who remained in North
Africa so they would not oppose their fellow countrymen. The
regiment was 4,000 strong and most of its number were killed during
the first 18 months of the conflict. Hall fought in the trenches
until the end of the first year of the war and the transferred to
the air service where he was trained as pilot. After a period of
reconnaissance flying, his first taste of action came in 1915
during the allied offensive around Champagne. Hall was well known
as one of the renowned cadre of American pilots who formed the core
in the legendary Lafayette Escadrille-the fighter squadron with the
Indian head insignia. He experienced the air war of the Western
Front in full measure before a transfer in late 1916 to the Eastern
theatre to assist the Russians and Rumanians with their own war in
the air. There he took part in the bombing of Sophia and found
himself caught up in the Russian revolution. Hall tells his story
compellingly and it is full of first hand account reportage. This
book, written in 1918 before the end of hostilities, was not his
only foray into authorship but it is particularly immediate since
wartime events were still unfolding at the time of its original
publication and he expected to return to action.

This book examines how medieval medical theories were derived from
the teachings of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. It maintains that
the mystical element was the most attractive branch of medical
wisdom and shows how religious rites and observances like prayer
and anointing were adapted to medical usage.;But while for thinkers
like Roger Bacon disease was a fall from grace, there was also a
practical approach to illness. The book evaluates medieval recipes
for drugs and more mundane notions of disease in the light of the
findings of modern medicine. It shows for instance how the concept
of "flying venom" relates to modern germ theory.
[This] substantial book...makes an important and stimulating
contribution. MEDIEVAL ARCHAEOLOGY Warfare in Europe in the middle
ages underwent a marked change of emphasis as urban life expanded.
The concentration of wealth represented by a city was a valuable
objective, and the static nature of a siege was infinitely
preferable to the uncertainties of campaign. As the incidence of
sieges increased, so pitched battles declined. The studies in this
book, intended for specialists as well as general readers, follow
the history of siege warfare, exploringthe urban milieu within
which it developed, and the evolution of siege technology up to the
advent of gunpowder weaponry. The logistics of specific sieges,
from the Crusader kingdoms in the Near East and the Byzantine
Empire as well as medieval Europe, are also considered, with
evidence from literature, engineering, architecture and
cliometrics. IVY CORFIS is professor in the department of Spanish
and Portuguese at the University of Wisconsin, Madison; MICHAEL
WOLFE is professor in the department of history at Penn State
University, Altoona. Contributors: MICHAEL WOLFE, JAMES F. POWERS,
MICHAEL TOCH, DENYS PRINGLE, ERIC McGEER, PAUL E. CHEVEDDEN,
MICHAEL HARNEY, HEATHER ARDEN, WINTHROP WETHERBEE, KELLY DEVRIES,
MICHAEL MALLETT, BERT S. HALL.
This volume of studies seeks an anthropological view of medicine
and the healing arts as they were situated within the lives of
medieval people. Miracle cures and charms as well as drugs and
surgery fall within the scope of the authors represented here, as
does advice about diet and regimen. As well, the volume looks at
wellness and illness in broad contexts, avoiding the tendency of
modern medicine to focus on the isolation and definition of
pathological states.
