This volume focuses on recent developments in non-linear and hyperbolic equations. It will be a most valuable resource for researchers in applied mathematics, the theory of wavelets, and in mathematical and theoretical physics. Nine up-to-date contributions have been written on invitation by experts in the respective fields. The book is the third volume of the subseries "Advances in Partial Differential Equations."
The intention of the international conference PDE2000 was to bring together specialists from different areas of modern analysis, mathematical physics and geometry, to discuss not only the recent progress in their own fields but also the interaction between these fields. The special topics of the conference were spectral and scattering theory, semiclassical and asymptotic analysis, pseudodifferential operators and their relation to geometry, as well as partial differential operators and their connection to stochastic analysis and to the theory of semigroups. The scientific advisory board of the conference in Clausthal consisted of M. Ben-Artzi (Jerusalem), Chen Hua (Peking), M. Demuth (Clausthal), T. Ichinose (Kanazawa), L. Rodino (Turin), B.-W. Schulze (Potsdam) and J. SjAstrand (Paris). The book is aimed at researchers in mathematics and mathematical physics with interests in partial differential equations and all its related fields.
Boundary value problems for partial differential equations playa crucial role in many areas of physics and the applied sciences. Interesting phenomena are often connected with geometric singularities, for instance, in mechanics. Elliptic operators in corresponding models are then sin gular or degenerate in a typical way. The necessary structures for constructing solutions belong to a particularly beautiful and ambitious part of the analysis. Cracks in a medium are described by hypersurfaces with a boundary. Config urations of that kind belong to the category of spaces (manifolds) with geometric singularities, here with edges. In recent years the analysis on such (in general, stratified) spaces has become a mathematical structure theory with many deep relations with geometry, topology, and mathematical physics. Key words in this connection are operator algebras, index theory, quantisation, and asymptotic analysis. Motivated by Lame's system with two-sided boundary conditions on a crack we ask the structure of solutions in weighted edge Sobolov spaces and subspaces with discrete and continuous asymptotics. Answers are given for elliptic sys tems in general. We construct parametrices of corresponding edge boundary value problems and obtain elliptic regularity in the respective scales of weighted spaces. The original elliptic operators as well as their parametrices belong to a block matrix algebra of pseudo-differential edge problems with boundary and edge conditions, satisfying analogues of the Shapiro-Lopatinskij condition from standard boundary value problems. Operators are controlled by a hierarchy of principal symbols with interior, boundary, and edge components."
This is a volume originating from the Conference on Partial Differential Equations and Applications, which was held in Moscow in November 2018 in memory of professor Boris Sternin and attracted more than a hundred participants from eighteen countries. The conference was mainly dedicated to partial differential equations on manifolds and their applications in mathematical physics, geometry, topology, and complex analysis. The volume contains selected contributions by leading experts in these fields and presents the current state of the art in several areas of PDE. It will be of interest to researchers and graduate students specializing in partial differential equations, mathematical physics, topology, geometry, and their applications. The readers will benefit from the interplay between these various areas of mathematics.
This volume highlights the analysis on noncompact and singular manifolds within the framework of the cone calculus with asymptotics. The three papers at the beginning deal with parabolic equations, a topic relevant for many applications. The first article presents a calculus for pseudodifferential operators with an anisotropic analytic parameter. The subsequent paper develops an algebra of Mellin operators on the infinite space-time cylinder. It is shown how timelike infinity can be treated as a conical singularity. In the third text - the central article of this volume - the authors use these results to obtain precise information on the long-time asymptotics of solutions to parabolic equations and to construct inverses within the calculus. There follows a factorization theorem for meromorphic symbols: It is proven that each of these can be decomposed into a holomorphic invertible part and a smoothing part containing all the meromorphic information. It is expected that this result will be important for applications in the analysis of nonlinear hyperbolic equations. The final article addresses the question of the coordinate invariance of the Mellin calculus with asymptotics.
Hyperbolic partial di?erential equations describe phenomena of material or wave transport in the applied sciences. Despite of considerable progress in the past decades, the mathematical theory still faces fundamental questions concerningthe in?uenceofnonlinearitiesormultiple characteristicsofthe hyperbolicoperatorsor geometric properties of the domain in which the evolution process is considered. The current volume is dedicated to modern topics of the theory of hyperbolic equations such as evolution equations - multiple characteristics - propagation phenomena - global existence - in?uence of nonlinearities. It is addressed both to specialists and to beginners in these ?elds. The c- tributions are to a large extent self-contained. The ?rst contribution is written by Piero D'Ancona and Vladimir Georgiev. Piero D'Ancona graduated in 1982 from Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa. Since 1997he isfull professorat the Universityof Rome1. Vladimir Georgievgraduated in1981fromtheUniversityofSo?a.Since2000heisfullprofessorattheUniversity of Pisa. The ?rst part of the paper treats the existence of low regularity solutions to the local Cauchy problem associated with wave maps. This introductory part f- lows the classical approach developed by Bourgain, Klainerman, Machedon which yields local well-posedness results for supercritical regularity of the initial data. The nonuniqueness results are establishedbytheauthors under the assumption that the regularity of the initial data is subcritical. The approach is based on the use of self-similar solutions. The third part treats the ill-posedness results of the Cauchy problem for the critical Sobolev regularity. The approach is based on the e?ective application of the properties of a special family of solutions associated with geodesics on the target manifold.
The analysis and topology of elliptic operators on manifolds with singularities are much more complicated than in the smooth case and require completely new mathematical notions and theories. While there has recently been much progress in the field, many of these results have remained scattered in journals and preprints. Starting from an elementary level and finishing with the most recent results, this book gives a systematic exposition of both analytical and topological aspects of elliptic theory on manifolds with singularities. The presentation includes a review of the main techniques of the theory of elliptic equations, offers a comparative analysis of various approaches to differential equations on manifolds with singularities, and devotes considerable attention to applications of the theory. These include Sobolev problems, theorems of Atiyah-Bott-Lefschetz type, and proofs of index formulas for elliptic operators and problems on manifolds with singularities, including the authors' new solution to the index problem for manifolds with nonisolated singularities. A glossary, numerous illustrations, and many examples help readers master the subject. Clear exposition, up-to-date coverage, and accessibility-even at the advanced undergraduate level-lay the groundwork for continuing studies and further advances in the field.
This book presents boundary value problems for arbitrary elliptic pseudo-differential operators on a smooth compact manifold with boundary. In this regard, every operator admits global projection boundary conditions, giving rise to analogues of Toeplitz operators in subspaces of Sobolev spaces on the boundary associated with pseudo-differential projections. The book describes how these operator classes form algebras, and establishes the concept for Boutet de Monvel's calculus, as well as for operators on manifolds with edges, including the case of operators without the transmission property. Further, it shows how the calculus contains parametrices of elliptic elements. Lastly, the book describes natural connections to ellipticity of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer type for Dirac and other geometric operators, in particular spectral boundary conditions with Calderon-Seeley projections and the characterization of Cauchy data spaces.
This volume collects six articles on selected topics at the frontier between partial differential equations and spectral theory, written by leading specialists in their respective field. The articles focus on topics that are in the center of attention of current research, with original contributions from the authors. They are written in a clear expository style that makes them accessible to a broader audience. The articles contain a detailed introduction and discuss recent progress, provide additional motivation, and develop the necessary tools. Moreover, the authors share their views on future developments, hypotheses, and unsolved problems.

The book deals with the localization approach to the index problem for elliptic operators. Localization ideas have been widely used for solving various specific index problems for a long time, but the fact that there is actually a fundamental localization principle underlying all these solutions has mostly passed unnoticed. The ignorance of this general principle has often necessitated using various artificial tricks and hindered the solution of new important problems in index theory. So far, the localization principle has been only scarcely covered in journal papers and not covered at all in monographs. The suggested book is intended to fill the gap. So far, it is the first and only monograph dealing with the topic. Both the general localization principle and its applications to specific problems, existing and new, are covered. The book will be of interest to working mathematicians as well as graduate and postgraduate university students specializing in differential equations and related topics. "

Pseudo-differential operators belong to the most powerful tools in the analysis of partial differential equations. Basic achievements in the early sixties have initiated a completely new understanding of many old and important problems in analy- sis and mathematical physics. The standard calculus of pseudo-differential and Fourier integral operators may today be considered as classical. The development has been continuous since the early days of the first essential applications to ellip- ticity, index theory, parametrices and propagation of singularities for non-elliptic operators, boundary-value problems, and spectral theory. The basic ideas of the calculus go back to Giraud, Calderon, Zygmund, Mikhlin, Agranovich, Dynin, Vishik, Eskin, and Maslov. Subsequent progress was greatly stimulated by the classical works of Kohn, Nirenberg and Hormander. In recent years there developed a new vital interest in the ideas of micro- local analysis in connection with analogous fields of applications over spaces with singularities, e.g. conical points, edges, corners, and higher singularities. The index theory for manifolds with singularities became an enormous challenge for analysists to invent an adequate concept of ellipticity, based on corresponding symbolic structures. Note that index theory was another source of ideas for the later development of the theory of pseudo-differential operators. Let us mention, in particular, the fundamental contributions by Gelfand, Atiyah, Singer, and Bott.
Partial differential equations constitute an integral part of mathematics. They lie at the interface of areas as diverse as differential geometry, functional analysis, or the theory of Lie groups and have numerous applications in the applied sciences. A wealth of methods has been devised for their analysis. Over the past decades, operator algebras in connection with ideas and structures from geometry, topology, and theoretical physics have contributed a large variety of particularly useful tools. One typical example is the analysis on singular configurations, where elliptic equations have been studied successfully within the framework of operator algebras with symbolic structures adapted to the geometry of the underlying space. More recently, these techniques have proven to be useful also for studying parabolic and hyperbolic equations. Moreover, it turned out that many seemingly smooth, noncompact situations can be handled with the ideas from singular analysis. The three papers at the beginning of this volume highlight this aspect. They deal with parabolic equations, a topic relevant for many applications. The first article prepares the ground by presenting a calculus for pseudo differential operators with an anisotropic analytic parameter. In the subsequent paper, an algebra of Mellin operators on the infinite space-time cylinder is constructed. It is shown how timelike infinity can be treated as a conical singularity.

The present Teubner-Text contains the contributions from the International Workshop "Analysis in Domains and on Manifolds with Singularities", Breitenbrunn, Germany, 30. April-5. May 1990. In recent years the analysis on manifolds with singularities became more and more interesting, not only because of the progress in solving corresponding singular problems in partial differential equations but also of the new relations to other parts of mathematics such as geometry, topology and mathematical physics. Other motivations come from concrete models in engineering and applied sciences which lead to partial differential equations in domains with a piece-wise smooth geometry (conical points, edges, comers, ..., higher singularities), piece-wise smooth data or boundary and transmission conditions, degenerate coefficients, and so on. There are natural relations to the numerical analysis where also the asymptotics of solutions close to the singularities playa role. As for the smooth cases it is necessary to develop structure principles and unified theories that cover as much as possible the huge variety of concrete situations, often being treated by individual papers under very specific assumptions.
