Having already published a bibliography on Annie Besant, Theodore Besterman in this book continued with the story of her life. She was a prominent British Theosophist, women's rights activist, writer and orator who lived between 1847 and 1933. Originally published in 1934, this work is fascinating for anyone with an interest in Annie Besant's life specifically or in any of the areas in which she became a household name.
This volume brings together Voltaire's writings from 1750-1752, penned before his break with Frederick the Great marked the end of his stay in Berlin. Ranging from philosophical poetry to military strategy and satire, these texts and commentaries reveal the full extent of Voltaire's intellectual interests. They also highlight his place within an Enlightenment network of (often temporary) allies, such as Frederick the Great, and sworn enemies, notably La Beaumelle and Maupertuis.
'Studies of Savages and Sex' are brought together by nine shorter essays. In the present Volume are assembled three longer studies, the first of which, indeed, is long and important enough to have made a volume itself. It speaks of the origins, forms and psychology of dress (with special emphasis on the sexual psychology). The psychology of drinks and drums and all three combined.

The success of my revised edition of Mr Crawley's The Mystic Rose has encouraged me to bring together in the present volume some of his papers previously unpublished in book-form, on subjects akin to those of his great work. Mr Crawley's treatment of these problems of sexual anthropology, especially on the psychological side, was, in the years in which he was most actively at work, too uncompromisingly original to meet with general acceptation, even in academic circles. But now his standpoint, which can perhaps be best described as being that of a profound psychological analysis on the basis of biological common-sense, is beginning to be appreciated. And the following papers will be found, I think, to contain all those qualities which so sharply differentiate Mr Crawley's work from that of most other students in the same fields.

Originally published in 1935, William Archer's interest in dreams had persisted for over quarter of a century, for ten years of which he kept a careful record of his own dreams. These records alone form a valuable collection of material, of which Archer made good use in the writing of the book on dreams on which he was engaged at the time of his death; large parts of these dream-records are reproduced in this book. He left this book partly finished, partly in draft, and partly in the form of notes. In putting together this material the editor, Theodore Besterman, tries to carry out Archer's intentions as closely as possible, and believed that he represented the book as he would have wished it to appear. It was unquestionably an important contribution to a difficult subject at the time, the result of many years' study and reflection.

During the past decades, "Dynamics of the singing voice" has successfully been established as a reference text for teachers of singing, singers, choral conductors and organists, speech and voice therapists, laryngologists and other health professionals, psychologists and those in linguistics. It discusses the physiological, psychological, musical and emotional aspects of the voice, particularly as they relate to singing but also to speaking. The book provides a greater understanding of how the voice works and the many factors involved in singing as well as an objective discussion of singing without reference to specific techniques. In this fifth edition, the author has now updated and rearranged the content. Furthermore she has added a new chapter on vocal pedagogic aspects in order to meet the requirements of the art of singing of the 21st century. Thus this new book provides the reader with the established concepts in combination with the latest knowledge about modern approaches to the singing voice.
Theodore Besterman's edition of the notebooks Voltaire kept throughout his long life show not only the staggering breadth of his interests, but the wide reading, inquiry and curiosity which Voltaire made a record of day by day. In their casual, careless nature lies the great value of these notebooks, bringing before us the living, authentic Voltaire. This edition aims to give the reader as near a sense of the original as is typographically practicable, while improving the readability of the text, in order to depict as closely as possible the source and development of Voltaire's thought.
The author attempted to fill a gap in theosophical literature by supplying an up-to-date and complete dictionary of the technical terms current in theosophical literature. The principles on which the dictionary were compiled are fully set out in the introduction, where some related points are also brought forward. The bibliography contains a classified list of the chief works the author used in compiling this reference book.
Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves - and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives - and destroyed them. Now Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization and helped make us who we are.;Voltaire's short, radical and iconoclastic essays on philosophical ideas from angels to idolatry, miracles to wickedness, make wry observations about human beliefs, and mock hypocrisy and extravagant piety - his call to his fellow men to act with reason and see through the lies they are fed by their leaders has provided inspiration to freethinkers everywhere.
