The Global Diffusion of Markets and Democracy (Hardcover, New): Beth A. Simmons, Frank Dobbin, Geoffrey Garrett The Global Diffusion of Markets and Democracy (Hardcover, New)
Beth A. Simmons, Frank Dobbin, Geoffrey Garrett
R2,510 Discovery Miles 25 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The diffusion of markets and democracy around the world was a defining feature of the late twentieth century. Many social scientists view this economic and political liberalization as the product of independent choices by national governments. This book argues that policy and political changes were influenced heavily by prior actions of external actors: not just other governments, but international organizations and communities of experts. Drawing together insights from economics, sociology, political science and international relations, the contributors focus on four mechanisms by which markets and democracy have diffused through interdependent decision-making: coercion and the impact of powerful countries and international actors; economic competition for markets and investment; learning from experiences of other countries; and emulation among countries. These mechanisms are tested empirically using sophisticated quantitative techniques in areas as diverse as capital account and investment policy, human rights and democratization, and government downsizing, privatization and taxation.

Mobilizing for Human Rights - International Law in Domestic Politics (Hardcover): Beth A. Simmons Mobilizing for Human Rights - International Law in Domestic Politics (Hardcover)
Beth A. Simmons
R1,951 Discovery Miles 19 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume argues that international human rights law has made a positive contribution to the realization of human rights in much of the world. Although governments sometimes ratify human rights treaties, gambling that they will experience little pressure to comply with them, this is not typically the case. Focusing on rights stakeholders rather than the United Nations or state pressure, Beth Simmons demonstrates through a combination of statistical analyses and case studies that the ratification of treaties leads to better rights practices on average. By several measures, civil and political rights, women s rights, a right not to be tortured in government detention, and children s rights improve, especially in the very large heterogeneous set of countries that are neither stable autocracies nor stable democracies. Simmons argues that international human rights law should get more practical and rhetorical support from the international community as a supplement to broader efforts to address conflict, development, and democratization.

International Law and International Relations - An International Organization Reader (Hardcover): Beth A. Simmons, Richard H.... International Law and International Relations - An International Organization Reader (Hardcover)
Beth A. Simmons, Richard H. Steinberg
R2,127 R1,962 Discovery Miles 19 620 Save R165 (8%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This 2007 volume is intended to help readers understand the relationship between international law and international relations (IL/IR). As a testament to this dynamic area of inquiry, new research on IL/IR is now being published in a growing list of traditional law reviews and disciplinary journals. The excerpted articles in this volume, all of which were first published in International Organization, represent some of the most important research since serious social science scholarship began in this area more than twenty five years ago. They are important milestones toward making IL/IR a central concern of scholarly research in international affairs. The contributions cover some of the main topics of international affairs to provide readers with a range of theoretical perspectives, concepts, and heuristics that can be used to analyze the relationship between international law and international relations.

The Power of Global Performance Indicators (Hardcover): Judith G. Kelley, Beth A. Simmons The Power of Global Performance Indicators (Hardcover)
Judith G. Kelley, Beth A. Simmons
R3,102 Discovery Miles 31 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Global performance indicators (GPIs), such as ratings and rankings, permeate nearly every type of human activity, internationally and nationally, across public and private spheres. While some indicators aim to attract media readership or brand the creator's organization, others increasingly seek to influence political practices and policies. The Power of Global Performance Indicators goes beyond the basic questions of methodological validity explored by others to launch a fresh debate about power in the modern age, exploring the ultimate questions concerning real-world consequences of GPIs, both intended and unintended. From business regulation to terrorism, education to foreign aid, Kelley and Simmons demonstrate how GPIs provoke bureaucracies, shape policy agendas, and influence outputs through their influence of third parties such as donors and market actors and, potentially, even broader global authority structures.

Who Adjusts? - Domestic Sources of Foreign Economic Policy during the Interwar Years (Paperback, New Ed): Beth A. Simmons Who Adjusts? - Domestic Sources of Foreign Economic Policy during the Interwar Years (Paperback, New Ed)
Beth A. Simmons
R1,660 Discovery Miles 16 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this work Beth Simmons presents a fresh view of why governments decided to abide by or defect from the gold standard during the 1920s and 1930s. Previous studies of the spread of the Great Depression have emphasized "tit-for-tat" currency and tariff manipulation and a subsequent cycle of destructive competition. Simmons, on the other hand, analyzes the influence of domestic politics on national responses to the international economy. In so doing, she powerfully confirms that different political regimes choose different economic adjustment strategies.
