Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Set in 1927, Don Lockwood (Kelly) has worked his way up from being a song-and-dance man with partner Cosmo Brown (Donald O'Connor) to become a top movie star. His on-screen partner, Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), who believes that Don loves her for real, needs to have her awful singing voice dubbed with the arrival of talkies. The girl selected is 'serious' actress Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds), for whom Don soon falls. Musical numbers include the famous title song, as well as 'Make 'Em Laugh', 'Good Morning' and 'You Were Meant for Me'.

An American in Paris (1951)
American G.I. Jerry Mulligan (Kelly) has remained in Paris after the war to become a painter. There he falls in love with Lise Bouvier (Leslie Caron), only to discover that she is engaged to his friend, Henri Baurel (Georges Guetary). With music and songs by George and Ira Gershwin, including 'I Got Rhythm' and 'Embraceable You', the film went on to win six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Anchors Aweigh (1945)
Kelly and Frank Sinatra star as two sailors looking for female companionship while on a four-day pass in Los Angeles. They meet a Hollywood extra (Kathryn Grayson) and try to help her realise her dream of being a star. The film features a famous sequence where Kelly dances with Jerry, the cartoon mouse of 'Tom and Jerry' fame.

On the Town (1949)
Three sailors (Kelly, Sinatra and Jules Munshin) hit New York City for a 24-hour shore leave. The first order of business is to find some women to spend it with and the boys hook up with Ivy (Vera-Ellen), an aspiring dancer, Hildy (Betty Garrett), a lady cab-driver, and Claire (Ann Miller), a paleontology student, causing mayhem across Manhattan. This was the first musical to make extensive use of location shooting rather than studio bound sets and includes the song-and-dance numbers 'New York, New York' and 'Miss Turnstiles Ballet'.

Simplified Revised Version

Musical comedy

Book and Lyrics by Adolph Green and Betty Comden

Music by Cy Coleman

Based on a play by Ben Hecht and Charles McArthur and also a play by Bruce Milholland

17 Principal roles, plus chorus (doubling possible)

Whether performed with elaborate scenery or on a simple scale, this brilliantly comic musical appeals to audiences everywhere. As in the classic original, the story concerns the efforts of a flamboyant theatrical impresario Oscar Jaffe to persuade glamorous film star (and former amour) Lily Garland to appear in his next production while outwitting rival producers, creditors and religious nut Letitcia Primrose. And all this before the 20th Century Ltd. reaches NYC

"Spectacular, funny and elegant...civilized wit and wild humor."-The New York Times

"A perfect musical...A gorgeous show "-New York Post

"A rare delight: a musical that tells a story and does so with delicious wit. A hilarious American sequel to My Fair Lady."-Hartford Courant

With her lifelong collaborator, Adolph Green, Betty Comden has enjoyed the kind of glory known only to the greatest of Broadway and Hollywood's luminaries. Their many successes as lyricists were written with some of the theater's greatest composers: On the Town and Wonderful Town with Leonard Bernstein; Bells Are Ringing and Hallelujah Baby, among others, with Jule Styne; and On the Twentieth Century and The Will Rogers Follies with Cy Coleman. These shows have won them six Tony awards. In addition, Betty has written, always with Adolph Green, the screenplays for numerous films, including the legendary screen musicals Singin' in the Rain and The Band Wagon. Hers is a career that has spanned many decades, and known countless triumphs. Her early success in the worlds of theater and film brought her friendship and collaboration with great stars such as Gene Kelly and Lauren Bacall, and warm relationships with idols of her childhood like Charles Chaplin, Fred Astaire, and Groucho Marx. But offstage and behind the scenes, her life has not always gone the way she might have scripted it. Acknowledging that there are no rewrites in life, this very intimate book is a personal remembrance - a humorous and moving trip through an extraordinary lifetime - from her childhood in Brooklyn and her close relationship with her family to her exodus into the Big City, Manhattan, where the "fearful, aspiring theater nut" attended N.Y.U., and shortly after met Steven Kyle, the man she married and loved for life. In Off Stage she describes her life as an intricate balancing act, juggling home and career and not always providing the happy endings her shows offered. She writes of the lessons she has learned as awife and mother - about her early difficulties with her daughter and the loss of her son to the ravages of drugs. Informed by the experience of working in the theater, and in musical films when they were a fine art form, this book is not only of special interest for theater and movie buffs, but also the inspirational story of a woman of many talents and interests who tried to have it all - and very nearly succeeded.
