A Portuguese slave ship leaves the Elmina Castle with hundreds of African slaves bound for the Americas, but one slave girl is left behind. A traumatic story of Asana and her new environment extol the attributes of the tradition and culture of the people of Edina, both of the spiritual and the mundane. The impact of the slave trade on all concerned is told with anger, love and even humour. In spite of her ordeal, Asana, like the people of Edina, remains strong like the anthill. The Elmina Castle features in a documentary film made by Bill Marshall on Nana Yaa Asantewaa, the legendary queen mother of Ejisu in Ashanti, who was captured by the British colonial masters, who exiled her to Seychelles where she died. This play comes after a four year drought in any artistic work by the author.
This study introduces the reader to Victor Serge's life and extraordinary novels, locating them amidst crucial debates about revolution, communism, anarchism, literature and representation, and in comparison with his contemporaries. Marshall demonstrates that the voice of Serge is unified by a notion of dissent - an active dissent far removed from the quietism and conservatism of other dissidents.
The author is a well known Ghanaian novelist, theatre writer and screenwriter. Kodzo's dramatic birth in a canoe in the middle of the Volta river, endows him with unique powers and a personal charm for which he is liked by some and violently resented by others. He is generally considered immune to all forms of danger. But he finds himself in jeopardy when he has an affair with the daughter of Tobge, a powerful chief, and also the daughter of Dr. Hoffman, a German scientist.
This is the first full-length monograph in English about one of
France's most important contemporary filmmakers, perhaps best known
in the English speaking world for his award winning Les Roseaux
sauvages/Wild Reeds of 1994. This study locates Andre Techine
within historical and cultural contexts that include the Algerian
war, May 1968 and contemporary globalization, and the influence of
Roland Barthes, Bertolt Brecht, Ingmar Bergman, William Faulkner
and the cinematic French wave. The originality of Techine's sixteen
feature films lies in his subtle exploration of sexuality and
national identity, as he challenges expectations in his depictions
of gay relations, the North African dimensions of contemporary
French culture, and the center-periphery relationship between Paris
and his native southwest.
During World War II, the United States Army Air Corps was led by a cadre of officers who believed implicitly that military aviation, particularly fast heavy bombers at high altitude, would be able to destroy strategic enemy targets during daylight with minimal losses. However, by 1942 the Flying Fortress was proving vulnerable to Luftwaffe fighters. This title charts the United States Army Air Force's struggle to develop a Long-Range Escort which would enable them to achieve the Combined Bomber Objectives and gain mastery of the skies over the Third Reich. The commitment of the USAAF to the Mediterranean and European theatres saw an increasingly desperate need to find a fighter escort, which reached crisis point in 1943 as losses suffered in the Tidal Wave offensive and Schweinfurt-Regensburg-Munster raids emphasised the mounting strength of the Luftwaffe. The USAAF leaders increasingly accepted the probability of bomber losses, and the deployment of the P-51B Mustang solved the problem of Germany's layered defence strategy, as Luftwaffe fighters had been avoiding the P-47 Thunderbolt and P-38 Lightening escort fighters by concentrating their attacks beyond the range of the Thunderbolt and Lightning. The P-51B duly emerged as the 'The Bastard Stepchild' that the USAAF Material Division did not want, becoming the key Long-Range Escort fighter, alongside the P-38 and P-47, that defeated the Luftwaffe prior to D-Day. As well as the P-51B's history, this title explores the technical improvements made to each of these fighters, as well as the operational leadership and technical development of the Luftwaffe they fought against.
