Revealing the lives of migrant couples and transnational
households, this book explores the dark side of the history of
migration in Argentina during the late 19th and early 20th
centuries. Using court records, censuses, personal correspondence
and a series of case studies, Maria Bjerg offers a portrayal of the
emotional dynamics of transnational marital bonds and intimate
relationships stretched across continents. Using microhistories and
case studies, this book shows how migration affected marital bonds
with loneliness, betrayal, fear and frustration. Focusing primarily
on the emotional lives of Italian and Spanish migrants, this book
explores bigamy, infidelity, adultery, domestic violence and murder
within official and unofficial unions. It reveals the complexities
of obligation, financial hardship, sacrifice and distance that came
with migration, and explores how shame, jealousy, vengeance and
disobedience led to the breaking of marital ties. Against a
backdrop of changing cultural contexts Bjerg examines the emotional
languages and practices used by adulterous women against their
offended husbands, to justify domestic violence and as a defence
against homicide. Demonstrating how migration was a powerful
catalyst of change in emotional lives and in evolving social
standards, Emotions and Migration in Early Twentieth-century
Argentina reveals intimate and disordered lives at a time when
female obedience and male honour were not only paramount, but
exacerbated by distance and displacement.

Rethinking Education in Light of Global Challenges discusses
challenges to education in Scandinavian welfare states due to
global trends like migration, neoliberal strategies, and the
exploitation of nature. This anthology comprises case studies,
theoretical articles, and reflective studies, grouped under the
headings of Culture, Society, and the Anthropocene. This book
directly addresses three interrelated global events and their
implications for education as seen from Scandinavian perspectives:
migration flows, increased cultural diversity, and
(post)nationalism; the erosion of the welfare state and the global
rise of neoliberalism; and the Anthropocene and environmental
challenges arising in the wake of the global exploitation of
natural ecosystems. In case studies, theoretical articles, and
reflective studies, researchers from Nordic countries explore how
education, education policy, and educational thinking in these
countries are affected by these global trends, bringing to the fore
the different roles education can play in addressing the various
issues and different ways of reimagining education. This
authoritative volume will be of great interest to researchers,
academics, and students in the fields of sociology of education,
migration and education, environmental education, and educational
politics.
Parallax of Growth explores the ideas of economy and ecology and
the factors that have put them on a collision course. Bjerg argues
that our current mode of economic organization is characterized by
an inherent 'debt drive', whereby the creation of money through the
issuance of commercial bank credit has locked our economy into a
vicious circle of forced growth and increasing debt. Parallax of
Growth is not a catalogue of solutions to the ecological or the
economic crisis. The book aims to shift the inquiry from 'what
shall we do?' to 'why have we not already done it?' In order to
address the challenges of our contemporary times of crisis, we need
to understand how the idea of growth is deeply ingrained in the
ideology as well as the organization of our society. The book aims
to open the space for philosophical thinking about this important
issue.
This book analyses the Nordic constitutional systems of Denmark,
Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden in a comparative context. It
has two main aims: first to fill a gap in the literature by
providing an accessible English language account of the Nordic
constitutions, and second to provide a comparative analysis of
them, revealing their similarities and differences within their
political, historical and cultural contexts. In this respect, the
book challenges the assumption that the Nordic countries form a
homogeneous constitutional system due to their cultural and
historical affinities, a view not necessarily supported by a close
comparative examination. A key issue is EU membership -where the
Nordic countries have made different choices at different times -
and the book will show how this has affected the individual
countries and whether a divide between EU member states (Denmark,
Finland and Sweden) and non-members (Iceland and Norway) has
appeared. Another key issue is how the ECHR has impacted the Nordic
constitutional systems and whether the convention draws the Nordic
systems closer to each other. The book represents a first of its
kind in the English language, and will provide constitutional
scholars with a valuable comparative resource on the Nordic region.

Understanding Disability Throughout History explores seldom-heard
voices from the past by studying the hidden lives of disabled
people before the concept of disability existed culturally,
socially and administratively. The book focuses on Iceland from the
Age of Settlement, traditionally considered to have taken place
from 874 to 930, until the 1936 Law on Social Security (Loeg um
almannatryggingar), which is the first time that disabled people
were referenced in Iceland as a legal or administrative category.
Data sources analysed in the project represent a broad range of
materials that are not often featured in the study of disability,
such as bone collections, medieval literature and census data from
the early modern era, archaeological remains, historical archives,
folktales and legends, personal narratives and museum displays. The
ten chapters include contributions from multidisciplinary team of
experts working in the fields of Disability Studies, History,
Archaeology, Medieval Icelandic Literature, Folklore and Ethnology,
Anthropology, Museum Studies, and Archival Sciences, along with a
collection of post-doctoral and graduate students. The volume will
be of interest to all scholars and students of disability studies,
history, medieval studies, ethnology, folklore, and archaeology.
Over the course of the last ten years the issue of debt has become
a serious problem that threatens to destroy the global
socio-economic system and ruin the everyday lives of millions of
people. This collection brings together a range of perspectives of
key thinkers on debt to provide a sociological analysis focused
upon the social, political, economic, and cultural meanings of
indebtedness. The contributors to the book consider both the lived
experience of debt and the more abstract processes of
financialisation taking place globally. Showing how debt functions
on the level of both macro- and microeconomics, the book also
provides a more holistic perspective, with accounts that span
sociological, cultural, and economic forms of analysis.

Love and its attendant emotions not only spur migration—they
forge our response to the people who leave their homes in search of
new lives. Emotional Landscapes looks at the power of love, and the
words we use to express it, to explore the immigration experience.
The authors focus on intimate emotional language and how languages
of love shape the ways human beings migrate but also create meaning
for migrants, their families, and their societies. Looking at
sources ranging from letters of Portuguese immigrants in the 1880s
to tweets passed among immigrant families in today's Italy, the
essays explore the sentimental, sexual, and political meanings of
love. The authors also look at how immigrants and those around them
use love to justify separation and loss, and how love influences us
to privilege certain immigrants—wives, children, lovers,
refugees—over others. Affecting and perceptive, Emotional
Landscapes moves from war and transnational families to gender and
citizenship to explore the crossroads of migration and the history
of emotion. Contributors: María Bjerg, Marcelo J. Borges,
Sonia Cancian, Tyler Carrington, Margarita Dounia, Alexander
Freund, Donna R. Gabaccia, A. James Hammerton, Mirjam Milharčič
Hladnik, Emily Pope-Obeda, Linda Reeder, Roberta Ricucci, Suzanne

This book presents new developments in Scandinavian memory cultures
related to World War II and the Holocaust by combining this focus
with the perspective of history didactics. The theoretical
framework of historical consciousness offers an approach linking
individual and collective uses and re-uses of the past to the
question how history can and should be taught. It also offers some
examples of good practice in this field. The book promotes a
teaching practice which, in taking the social constructivist
notions of historical consciousness as a starting point, can
contribute to self-reflecting and critical thinking - being
fundamental for any democratic political culture.
