A Brief History of Political Economy - Tales of Marx, Keynes and Hayek (Hardcover): Lars Magnusson, Bo Strath A Brief History of Political Economy - Tales of Marx, Keynes and Hayek (Hardcover)
Lars Magnusson, Bo Strath
R2,846 Discovery Miles 28 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the three historical master tales and questions their validity and relevance in today's moment of global disorientation and lack of convincing and dominant economic narrative. Investigating the ideological dimension and exploring the continued impact of Marx, Keynes and Hayek, the authors demonstrate how these three economic narratives became entangled over time and under increasing complexity, overlapping and competing with each other. The book reflects on the meaning of the historical legacy of the three narratives and investigates their significance today. All three outlined the prospects of a better and more economically efficient world with increased social justice, Magnusson and Strath argue that they constitute a legacy on which a new economic tale must be based, a legacy to draw on or confront. A concise and engaging work, this is an ideal resource for students and academics interested in economics, political science, history and global studies. A Brief History of Political Economy presents a powerful economic history of the last 170 years as a basis for economic reconsideration.

Bo Strath
R5,339 Discovery Miles 53 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There have been dramatic shifts in the behaviour of labour markets and the conduct of industrial relations in the last century. This volume explores these changes in the context of four very different societies: Germany, Sweden, Britain and Japan. However, despite their manifest differences, the author demonstrates that for long periods their labour markets were similar in many crucial respects. The book discusses:
* the failure of neo-corporatism in Britain in the 1970's and the subsequent rise of Thatcherism;
* the rise of Japan as a model for orderly industrial relations in the 1970's
* the collapse of the German and the success of the Swedish labour markets in the 1930's.

European Modernity - A Global Approach (Paperback): Bo Strath, Peter Wagner European Modernity - A Global Approach (Paperback)
Bo Strath, Peter Wagner
R958 Discovery Miles 9 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

It is often taken for granted that modernity emerged in Europe and diffused from there across the world. This book questions that assumption and re-examines the question of European modernity in the light of world history. Bo Strath and Peter Wagner re-position Europe in the global context of the 19th and 20th centuries. They show that Europe is less modern than has been assumed, and modernity less European and thus decentre Europe in a way that makes room for a wider historical perspective. Adopting a thematic structure, the authors reconceive the idea of European modernity in relation to key topics such as democracy, capitalism and market society, individual autonomy, religion and politics. European Modernity is an important addition to the literature that will be of interest to all students and scholars of modern European history.

A European Memory? - Contested Histories and Politics of Remembrance (Paperback): Malgorzata Pakier, Bo Strath A European Memory? - Contested Histories and Politics of Remembrance (Paperback)
Malgorzata Pakier, Bo Strath
R1,106 Discovery Miles 11 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"As the most comprehensive scholarly venture to use the memory concept for a broad assessment of the dark legacies of Nazism, Communism, and World War II for a common European identity, the volume has no equal. It overwhelms the reader with a plethora of both new and well established information and reflection...The overall direction coincides with the current trend towards internationalization of national histories. It can be considered a strong contribution to this important and worthwhile trend." Frank Trommler, University of Pennsylvania

An examination of the role of history and memory is vital in order to better understand why the grand design of a United Europe-with a common foreign policy and market yet enough diversity to allow for cultural and social differences-was overwhelmingly turned down by its citizens. The authors argue that this rejection of the European constitution was to a certain extent a challenge to the current historical grounding used for further integration and further demonstrates the lack of understanding by European bureaucrats of the historical complexity and divisiveness of Europe's past. A critical European history is therefore urgently needed to confront and re-imagine Europe, not as a harmonious continent but as the outcome of violent and bloody conflicts, both within Europe as well as with its Others. As the authors show, these dark shadows of Europe's past must be integrated, and the fact that memories of Europe are contested must be accepted if any new attempts at a United Europe are to be successful.

Ma gorzata Pakier is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Sociology, Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities, and is also active in planning the Museum of the History of Polish Jews. She received her PhD from the European University Institute in Florence, Department of History and Civilization. Her research interests include the media of memory, especially film, museum, and city spaces, and Holocaust memory and representation.

Bo Strath was Professor of Contemporary History at the European University Institute in Florence (1997-2007) and is currently Academy of Finland Distinguished Professor of Nordic, European and World History at Helsinki University. His research concentrates on questions of modernity and the use of history in a European and global perspective.

Bo Strath
R1,693 Discovery Miles 16 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Europe's Utopias of Peace explores attempts to create a lasting European peace in the aftermath of the Napoleonic wars and the two world wars. The book charts the 250 year cycle of violent European conflicts followed by new utopian formulations for peace. The utopian illusion was that future was predictable and rules could prescribe behaviour in conflicts to come. Bo Strath examines the reiterative bicentenary cycle since 1815, where each new postwar period built on a design for a project for European unification. He sets out the key historical events and the continuous struggle with nationalism, linking them to legal, political and economic thought. Biographical sketches of the most prominent thinkers and actors provide the human element to this narrative. Europe's Utopias of Peace presents a new perspective on the ideological, legal, economic and intellectual conditions that shaped Europe since the 19th century and presents this in a global context. It challenges the conventional narrative on Europe's past as a progressive enlightenment heritage, highlighting the ambiguities of the legacies that pervade the institutional structures of contemporary Europe. Its long-term historical perspective will be invaluable for students of contemporary Europe or modern European history.

The Meaning of Europe (Paperback, First): Mikael af Malmborg, Bo Strath The Meaning of Europe (Paperback, First)
Mikael af Malmborg, Bo Strath
R1,474 Discovery Miles 14 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Mention the word Europe in today's society and you are greeted with a range of responses, from impassioned debate, to scepticism and outright hostility. Yet long before the emergence of the modern European Union, the concept of Europe played a vital role in the creation of national identity. This book considers the wealth of contemporary and historical attitudes towards Europe and how these vary both within and between nation-states.
Why are some countries 'Europhiles' whilst others are 'Europhobic'? How has Europe alternately been perceived as a threat to local culture and identity or as the core of nation-building? Why are individual responses to Europe so diverse? Comparing and contrasting experiences from twelve very different countries, the authors explore the multitude of ways in which established national discourses are reconciled with an emerging identity within the EU. In doing so, this book makes an important contribution to what has proved to be one of the most controversial and heated debates of our time.

Roman Law and the Idea of Europe (Hardcover): Kaius Tuori, Heta Bjoerklund Roman Law and the Idea of Europe (Hardcover)
Kaius Tuori, Heta Bjoerklund; Series edited by Bo Strath, Martti Koskenniemi
R4,431 Discovery Miles 44 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on bloomsburycollections.com. It is funded by the European Research Council. Roman law is widely considered to be the foundation of European legal culture and an inherent source of unity within European law. Roman Law and the Idea of Europe explores the emergence of this idea of Roman law as an idealized shared heritage, tracing its origins among exiled German scholars in Britain during the Nazi regime. The book follows the spread and influence of these ideas in Europe after the war as part of the larger enthusiasm for European unity. It argues that the rise of the importance of Roman law was a reaction against the crisis of jurisprudence in the face of Nazi ideas of racial and ultranationalistic law, leading to the establishment of the idea of Europe founded on shared legal principles. With contributions from leading academics in the field as well as established younger scholars, this volume will be of immense interests to anyone studying intellectual history, legal history, political history and Roman law in the context of Europe.

Today's world is a world of nation-states; few have survived since the early modern period, some have existed for three hundred years, most came into being during the second part of the last century. Yet the equation between the state and the nation does not go back far in history, despite the prevailing tendency to view the state as closely linked to ethnicity. To challenge the latter this book attempts to examine statehood separately from the concept of ethnicity; it asks what is non-ethnic about statehood by looking at 'statehood before and beyond ethnicity'. A non-ethnic statehood is analysed in two forms: as a historical phenomenon at the time of the emergence of the early modern state (Part One) and as a historical tradition which had been pursued by the nation-builders in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (Part Two). Instead of looking at great powers as traditional models of statehood, individual chapters focus on minor and less familiar states in Northern and Eastern Europe from the period c. 1600-2000, including Belgium, Bohemia, Greece, the Netherlands, Romania, Poland-Lithuania, Serbia and Montenegro, Sweden, Scotland and Transylvania.

Lars Magnusson, Philippe Pochet, Bo Strath; Contributions by Saltsa
R1,363 Discovery Miles 13 630 Out of stock

The aim of this book is to explore and reflect upon preconditions of a specific European social dimension, or more specifically of a European social citizenship. Welfare and social policies in Europe are deeply entrenched in state histories; the success of the welfare state stems from its ability during a fairly long historical period to unify social citizenship, full employment, mass education and a functional industrial relations system. The historical connection between welfare regimes built upon the nation state, and popular democracy founded in party voting, makes the deepening and widening of a common European project a highly risky undertaking and an open process with a radically uncertain outcome. The dilemma in the form of uneasy relationships among national welfare regimes and the evolutionary process of increased market integration--driven both by market forces (globalisation) and the European Union as a political project--is well known and has been demonstrated by different commentators, Every step of deepening market integration in Europe tends to threaten and put pressure on the existing national welfare regimes. As their own populations generally support them, the legitimacy of the EU is at risk. The book analyses the prospects of a coordinated social dimension at the European level, matching the market integration, and what role the concept of citizenship can play in such a scenario.

Gendering Europeanisation (Paperback): Ulrike Liebert, Bo Strath Gendering Europeanisation (Paperback)
Ulrike Liebert, Bo Strath; As told to Stefanie Sifft
R1,037 Discovery Miles 10 370 Out of stock

Bruxelles, Bern, Berlin, Frankfurt/M., New York, Oxford, Wien. The advancement of European gender equality rights over the past three decades has been accompanied by a growing diversity of gender regimes in an enlarging EU. While the paradigms in European governance research tend to focus on homogenisation, enforcement and compliance with EU norms, comparative approaches to Europeanisation are premised on the awareness of a multiple Europe. This book explores gendered varieties of Europeanisation, ranging from resistance to adaptation, transformation and innovation. How have EU members engaged with EC equal-opportunity directives since 1975? Which gender issues have sparked political controversy? What were the outcomes of the interplays between EU norms and domestic gender regimes, public discourses on the EU and gender equality advocates? Gendering Europeanisation presents the findings of an international group of social and political scientists based at the University of Bremen. The volume begins with a scrutiny of the mechanisms and forms of Europeanisation, presents case studies of six countries and concludes with a comparative analysis of gender politics in Europe. Contents: Ulrike Liebert: Between Diversity and Equality: Analysing Europeanisation - Silke Reuter/Amy G. Mazur: Paradoxes of Gender-Biased Universalism: The Dynamics of French Equality Discourse - Petra Kodre/Henrike Muller: Shifting Policy Frames: EU Equal Treatment Norms and Domestic Discourses in Germany - Marina Calloni: From Maternalism to Mainstreaming: Femocrats and the Reframing of Gender Equality Policy in Italy - Stefanie Sifft: Pushing for Europeanisation: How British Feminists Link with the EU to PromoteParental Rights - Celia Valiente: Pushing for Equality Reforms: The European Union and Gender Discourse in Post-Authoritarian Spain - Milena Sunnus: EU Challenges to the Pioneer in Gender Equality: The Case of Sweden - Ulrike Liebert: Gendering Europeanisation: Patterns and Dynamics - Jorn Ketelhut: Appendix: EU Gender Equality Law, Gender Disparities in Domestic Labour Markets, and Public EU Support.

European Discourses on Rights - The Quest for Statehood in Europe--The Case of Slovakia (Paperback): Lubica U cn ik European Discourses on Rights - The Quest for Statehood in Europe--The Case of Slovakia (Paperback)
Lubica U cn ik; Edited by Bo Strath
R1,523 Discovery Miles 15 230 Out of stock

Bruxelles, Bern, Berlin, Frankfurt/M., New York, Oxford, Wien. By tracing the theoretical genealogy of such ideas as reason, natural and historical rights, the individual, nation, and the state, Lubica Ucnik argues that we need to come to terms with the conceptual framework of the Enlightenment in order to understand the relationship between nationalism and liberalism. The author claims that the foundation of our knowledge is embedded in the modern concept of the individual. She argues that there are two different models of individualism. One is predicated on the mechanistic universe of causation and defined by the idea of negative liberty; the other theorises the individual as relational and hence social. These two conceptions of the individual are tied to different concepts of rights. The idea of nation is likewise contained in the notion of the individual. Once again, there are two possible approaches. Using the example of the splitting of Czecho-Slovakia, the concept of historical right theorised by the German Historical School of Recht is elaborated. After the First World War, the idea of natural right, as advanced by the Treaty of Versailles promised a sense of legality to all nations living in Central Eastern Europe. Now two concepts - natural right and historical right - provide a basis for the claim of each nation to its own state. The complexity of the political situation in Europe after 1989 thus has to be interpreted differently. Contents: The book aims to explain the theoretical heritage of the Enlightenment in the context of liberalism and nationalism. It presents clear conceptual accounts of the individual, rights, the nation, the state, as well as the relationshipbetween the individual and the state, sensus communis, rational and irrational nations. This discussion enables a change of focus in current debates about nationalism versus liberalism and draws upon the split of Czecho-Slovakia as an example.

Multilingualism in Europe - A Case Study (Paperback, illustrated edition): Robert N Keane Multilingualism in Europe - A Case Study (Paperback, illustrated edition)
Robert N Keane; Edited by Lorna Carson, Bo Strath
R638 Discovery Miles 6 380 Out of stock

Bruxelles, Bern, Berlin, Frankfurt/M., New York, Oxford, Wien. The important question of how to bring the European Union closer to its citizens is bound up with the issue of how individuals, groups and nation states express and assert identity, with one of the fundamental challenges how to approach and deal with multilingual communication. This study assesses language use in a multilingual trans-European speech community. It examines language learning at school, university and elsewhere, languages spoken at home and in the workplace, and speakers' attitudes towards language learning and future linguistic solutions in Europe. The speech community selected for the case study are graduates of the College of Europe, a postgraduate institution of European Studies. Amongst other questions, this publication asks why these particular speakers are multilingual, and whether a two-tier Europe is developing in terms of foreign language skills. Using the case study as a point of departure for further discussion, the author explores how a balance may be achieved between managing effective communication between speakers, whilst maintaining the right of the individuals to use their own mother tongue. Contents: Sociolinguistics - Foreign language learning - Language use and choice - Language attitudes.

Reflections on Europe - Defining a Political Order in Time and Space (Paperback): Hans-Ake Persson, Bo Strath Reflections on Europe - Defining a Political Order in Time and Space (Paperback)
Hans-Ake Persson, Bo Strath

When Dutch and subsequently French voters rejected the Draft Treaty for a Constitutin for Europe in Spring 2005, many voices called for a pause for reflection. This book is, in part, a result of that moment of reflection. We wanted to contribute to the debate about Europe but crucially, we sought to do so by taking a step back from the problem formation and agenda-setting of Brussels. For the authors of this volume, one key to establishing critical distance has been the reappraisal of the historical perspective. Another has been the problematisation of 'Europe as a space' as opposed to looking for a definition of borders. The authors also seek critical distance through a focus on the tension between Europe as a culture, as a polity and as an economy. These tensions ahve often been neglected or even ignored and the relationships have been seen as more or less synonymous and harmonious. The aim of this volume, then, is two-fold. It wants, developing a critical distance to the present Euroope, to contribute to the vivid academic research and debate on Europe, which too often either develops distance without commenting on the present state of affairs or comments on the present without critical distance.
