Ken Morris's journey began one cold Pittsburgh morning in 1935. In the middle of the Great Depression, he was going to see the country as a door-to-door salesman. Detroit was to be his first and last stop. Life was hard and few people during this time of crisis knew how their future would evolve. After months of unemployment, Ken found a job at the Briggs Manufacturing Company, the toughest auto company in Detroit. Ken could not have known then he would eventually play a pioneering role in building one of the cleanest, most socially progressive labor unions the world has known-the United Automobile Workers. In Built in Detroit, author Bob Morris, Ken's son, tells not only his father's story, but also the UAW's story-the battles with companies, the struggles within the union, and then the vicious attacks on Detroit labor leaders in the late 1940s. This story tells of the efforts to investigate these terrorist attacks on Detroit's union leaders, including Ken Morris, Walter Reuther and others. This narrative sheds new light on the mystery of who tried to assassinate UAW president Walter Reuther. Rich with personal and historical details, Built in Detroit narrates a story unique to Detroit. It tells the story of a thriving city and the factories that gave the city life. Author Bob Morris deftly portrays many of the top labor leaders of the 1930s and 1940s, as well as the rank and file members who supported these labor leaders. It also provides portraits of early auto industrialists, their companies, their henchmen and the gangsters they hired to destroy the labor movement. In the case of the Briggs Manufacturing Company, it shows how a company that played loose with the law ultimately floundered, its Detroit heritage largely forgotten.

Tense and Aspect in Informal Welsh (Hardcover): Bob Morris Jones Tense and Aspect in Informal Welsh (Hardcover)
Bob Morris Jones
R6,519 Discovery Miles 65 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book provides a descriptive account of the semantics of three grammatical areas in informal Welsh: inflections of finite verbs, perfect aspect, and progressive aspect. The analyses distinguish context-independent primary meanings from other meanings which are due to implications and contextual effects. The inflections convey factuality, tense, (morphological) aspect, and habituality, but the inflections and their meanings are differently distributed over different sorts of verbs. The analysis of factuality outlines different sorts of counterfactual situations, and discusses whether counterfactual meaning can best be accounted for in terms of true statements in imagined possible worlds or in terms of false statements in the actual world. The analysis of tense argues that it conveys evaluation time and not situation time, which can be different to evaluation time, and that tense is not a collection of simple labels like 'past' or 'present' but is a combination of two times, a deictic reference time and a relative evaluation time, which organize the tenses as a system. Morphological aspect is discussed in terms of perfective and imperfective meanings. Habituality is a property of situations which can be described by all inflections but the study shows that bod 'be' alone has specialized forms to convey habituality. The discussion of the perfect aspect considers the appropriateness of anterior time, retrospective view, and current relevance to account for its meaning. The author argues that the progressive aspect conveys a durative view and the non-progressive a non-durative view, and shows that the progressive can describe situations which are described by the non-progressive in other languages. The study also considers whether other expressions can be aspect markers. The book shows that the primary meanings of the three grammatical areas are subject to various constraints.

The Role of Monarchy in Modern Democracy - European Monarchies Compared (Hardcover): Robert Hazell, Bob Morris The Role of Monarchy in Modern Democracy - European Monarchies Compared (Hardcover)

How much power does a monarch really have? How much autonomy do they enjoy? Who regulates the size of the royal family, their finances, the rules of succession? These are some of the questions considered in this edited collection on the monarchies of Europe. The book is written by experts from Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the UK. It considers the constitutional and political role of monarchy, its powers and functions, how it is defined and regulated, the laws of succession and royal finances, relations with the media, the popularity of the monarchy and why it endures. No new political theory on this topic has been developed since Bagehot wrote about the monarchy in The English Constitution (1867). The same is true of the other European monarchies. 150 years on, with their formal powers greatly reduced, how has this ancient, hereditary institution managed to survive and what is a modern monarch's role? What theory can be derived about the role of monarchy in advanced democracies, and what lessons can the different European monarchies learn from each other? The public look to the monarchy to represent continuity, stability and tradition, but also want it to be modern, to reflect modern values and be a focus for national identity. The whole institution is shot through with contradictions, myths and misunderstandings. This book should lead to a more realistic debate about our expectations of the monarchy, its role and its future. The contributors are leading experts from all over Europe: Rudy Andeweg, Ian Bradley, Paul Bovend'Eert, Axel Calissendorff, Frank Cranmer, Robert Hazell, Olivia Hepsworth, Luc Heuschling, Helle Krunke, Bob Morris, Roger Mortimore, Lennart Nilsson, Philip Murphy, Quentin Pironnet, Bart van Poelgeest, Frank Prochaska, Charles Powell, Jean Seaton, Eivind Smith.

You and Your Aging Parent - A Family Guide to Emotional, Social, Health, and Financial Problems (Paperback, 4th Revised... You and Your Aging Parent - A Family Guide to Emotional, Social, Health, and Financial Problems (Paperback, 4th Revised edition)
Barbara Silverstone, Helen Kandel Hyman, Bob Morris
R514 Discovery Miles 5 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

You and Your Aging Parent, originally published in 1976, was the first book to focus on the relationship between adult children and their aging parents. By noted gerontologist Barbara Silverstone and writer Helen Kandel Hyman, it turned the spotlight on the challenges faced by many adult children as they attempt to cope when elderly relatives need increasing support. Since the last edition of the book in 1989, numerous other books on the topic have entered the market, but most of them are superficial in the information and advice they provide to their readers and in the one-note assumptions about the parent-child relationship in the senior years. Moreover, programs and services for older people have changed significantly and become more comlex; a new generation of adult children and their parents are facing the challenges of aging, and recent research findings have deepened our understanding of the aging process and late life. This revised edition, marking its 30th anniversary, will address the changes that have taken place and revive its fundamental insight - that the difficulties and challenges of the aging process are as much a family affair as in any other phase of life and that the nature of the relationship between aging parents and their adult children will directly influence how the process is navigated. The size of the senior class is growing exponentially, including parents who are living longer than any older generation in history and baby boomers who are reluctantly entering the senior class, as well as countless younger sons and daughters wondering what's coming next. This new and updated edition will answer their need for authoritative, practical information about this major new phase of life. Playwright and New York Times columnist Bob Morris joins the book as commentator, adding his own entertaining insights as a member of the baby boom generation dealing with his own elderly parents' late life.

R435 Discovery Miles 4 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In early 1963, Jake Townley had very little to show for a man in his early 40s. His business efforts had not met with success and his family barely had enough food on the table. Yet, he placed his faith in the Lord. And once the Lord moved, a success story began to unfold and continues today - a story of overcoming - a story of encouragement - a story of tenacity - a story of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and Fire - a story of empowerment that leads to excellence - a story of love for family, the Savior and of the fellow man - a story of vision, staying power and grit, persistence, consistency and the value of work - a story of faith - and a story of blessing. Again, 50 years later, the faith operation component of Townley Engineering & Manufacturing Company is as strong as when Jake placed his foot on the sandy soils of East Lake Weir, Florida. And one man's stubborn faith has positively affected thousands of men, women and children in a number of communities across the United States and the world. If The Lord Wills, the future for the Townley Company and for its team of dedicated people will be a continuation of the faith journey which began 50 years ago. Toro Townley's outlook for the future is bright. "We have experienced monumental challenges in the past. We now have monumental opportunities in the future." This book is a written testament to the history of the Townley Company and its amazing journey thus far as the company prepares for the future.
