Popular religion in village India is overwhelmingly dominated by
goddess worship. Goddesses can be nationally well-known like Durga
or Kali, or they can be an obscure deity who is only known in a
particular rural locale. The origins of a goddess can be both
ancient with many transitions or amalgamations with other cults
having occurred along the way and very recent. While some have
tribal origins, others sprout up overnight due to a vivid dream.
Inventing and Reinventing the Goddess: Contemporary Iterations of
Hindu Divinities on the Move looks at the nature of how and why
goddesses are invented and reinvented historically in India and how
social hierarchy, gender differences, and modernity play roles in
these emerging religious phenomena."
In recent decades there has been a rising interest among scholars
of Hinduism and Judaism in engaging in the comparative studies of
these ancient traditions. Academic interests have also been
inspired by the rise of interreligious dialogue by the respective
religious leaders. Dharma and Halacha: Comparative Studies in
Hindu-Jewish Philosophy and Religion represents a significant
contribution to this emerging field, offering an examination of a
wide range of topics and a rich diversity of perspectives and
methodologies within each tradition, and underscoring significant
affinities in textual practices, ritual purity, sacrifice, ethics
and theology. Dharma refers to a Hindu term indicating law, duty,
religion, morality, justice and order, and the collective body of
Dharma is called Dharma-shastra. Halacha is the Hebrew term
designating the Jewish spiritual path, comprising the collective
body of Jewish religious laws, ethics and rituals. Although there
are strong parallels between Hinduism and Judaism in topics such as
textual practices and mystical experience, the link between these
two religious systems, i.e. Dharma and Halacha, is especially
compelling and provides a framework for the comparative study of
these two traditions. The book begins with an introduction to
Hindu-Jewish comparative studies and recent interreligious
encounters. Part I of the book titled "Ritual and Sacrifice,"
encompasses the themes of sacrifice, holiness, and worship. Part II
titled "Ethics," is devoted to comparing ethical systems in both
traditions, highlighting the manifold ways in which the sacred is
embodied in the mundane. Part III of the book titled "Theology,"
addresses common themes and phenomena in spiritual leadership, as
well as textual metaphors for mystical and visionary experiences in
Hinduism and Judaism. The epilogue offers a retrospective on
Hindu-Jewish encounters, mapping historic as well as contemporary
academic initiatives and collaborations.

George Boole (1815-1864) is well known to mathematicians for his
research and textbooks on the calculus, but his name has spread
world-wide for his innovations in symbolic logic and the
development and applications made since his day. The utility of
"Boolean algebra" in computing has greatly increased curiosity in
the nature and extent of his achievements. His work is most
accessible in his two books on logic, "A mathematical analysis of
logic" (1947) and "An investigation of the laws of thought" (1954).
But at various times he wrote manuscript essays, especially after
the publication of the second book; several were intended for a
non-technical work, "The Philosophy of logic", which he was not
able to complete. This volume contains an edited selection which
not only relates them to Boole's publications and the historical
context of his time, but also describes their strange history of
family, followers and scholars have treid to confect an edition.
The book will appeal to logicians, mathematicians and philosophers,
and those interested in the histories of the corresponding
subjects; and also students of the early Victorian Britain in which
they were written.

This volume examines the intellectual trajectories of remarkable
individuals who interacted with religious discourses, doctrines or
practices in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Inspired
by S. Subrahmanyam and S. Gruzinski's historiographical model of
"connected histories", this book introduces the approach of
"connected religion" and invites the study of cross-cultural and
"translocal" encounters by bringing together documents that
represent diverse aspects of the story and reconstructing a
narrative from diverse standpoints, with analytical potential.
Testing this approach through specific cases of interactions
between Asia and Europe, the volume explores the little-known
stories of actors such as migrants or expatriates interacting with
religious discourses, and of religious leaders producing and
propagating beliefs and practices. The cases pose questions that
can be applied to further contexts, such as: the significance of
improved travels and communications for the diffusion of religious
content across national, cultural and institutional boundaries; the
impact of specific individuals, charismatic or not,
well-established or subaltern in the reconfiguration of
institutional forms of religion; and the role of the South Asian
referent in legitimating the propagation of specific religious
views. Offering both an innovative methodological framework and
original cases based on new research, the book will be of interest
to scholars of religion, to specialists of South Asia in late
modernity and to the broader public.

An illuminating appraisal of the thirty-first president of the
United States
This detailed account of Herbert Hoover's presidency reveals him as
a staunch defender of constitutional government and one of our
least understood presidents. Battling political partisanship while
trying to place the needs of the nation as a whole over those of
state and localities, Hoover found his program for America's entry
into the new scientific era overwhelmed by profound changes in the
social and economic structure of a nation entering a new age.
From the outset of his presidency, Hoover faced opposition for his
programs from within his own party. Criticized for not
understanding "politics," it was instead traditional party
practices that stymied much of what he tried to accomplish.
Personally blamed for the financial disaster of 1929 that ushered
in the Great Depression, he was defeated in the election of 1932
because, as some publications of the time observed, the country did
not vote for Roosevelt, it voted against Hoover.
Despite opposition at every turn from both the opposing party and
the progressive faction among his fellow Republicans, Hoover in
retrospect emerges, in the words of the authors, as "a determined
spokesman for the traditional American virtues, hopes, and ideals
of individual opportunity, personal freedom, and love of country."

Haven't read anything positive about the United States of
America lately?
Can hardly remember exactly why we fought all those wars or what
that is worthwhile came out of them? The author of this book of 12
speeches and several essays was the invited speaker in those
difficult Sixties and Seventies on Independence Day, Naturalization
Day, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day at gatherings in Southern
Oregon. There he spoke from the heart (and his years of historical
training) to the matter of our wars and their reasons for being
waged.
Large audiences and small alike stood or sat while Vaughn Davis
Bornet delivered short orations that speak directly to sensitive
matters. In the Country and around the World at the time there grew
to be muttering and questioning; many "tuned out" or "dropped out"
as the drug culture and draft resistance moved in on the spirit
that had won World War II and earlier World War I.
The Rogue River Valley is a place of small towns; the locale is
just north of California, in the mountains, but Ashland, Medford,
and the smaller places are in valleys where old values continue to
be honored in ceremonies that honor our service personnel year
after year.
This book, whose prose is in most cases forty years old, returns
readers to an older time. It does so without apology, for the
author admits from the very beginning to being "patriotic." His
essay/speeches are, in a word no longer in general use,
patriotics.
The author's publications and bio appear on pages 150-153.
Since most of the words in this book were created to be spoken
aloud, why not read a few paragraphs or pages to a friend or
relative?
