Causal Explanation for Social Scientists - A Reader (Hardcover, New): Andrew P. Vayda, Bradley B. Walters Causal Explanation for Social Scientists - A Reader (Hardcover, New)
Andrew P. Vayda, Bradley B. Walters; Contributions by Jose F. Arocha, T. C. Chamberlin, Jon Elster, …
R4,724 Discovery Miles 47 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

All social scientists, despite their differences on many issues, ask causal questions about the world. In this anthology, Andrew P. Vayda and Bradley B. Walters set forth strategy and methods to answer those questions. The selected readings, all illuminating causal explanation for social scientists, are not only by anthropologists, sociologists, economists, and human ecologists but also by philosophers, biologists, psychologists, historians, and specialists in other fields. The essays will appeal to those doing applied research on practical problems as well as those seeking mainly to satisfy their curiosity about the causes of whatever events or types of events interest them.

The Greening of Saint Lucia - Economic Development and Environmental Change in the Eastern Caribbean (Paperback): Bradley B.... The Greening of Saint Lucia - Economic Development and Environmental Change in the Eastern Caribbean (Paperback)
Bradley B. Walters
R1,405 Discovery Miles 14 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Saint Lucia's rural landscape is more forested today than at any time in at least seventy-five years (probably much longer). This change is profoundly significant given widespread efforts to achieve sustainable development on small-island states like Saint Lucia. Yet, this seemingly good-news story runs contrary to most conventional narratives about the worsening state of the environment in the Caribbean and elsewhere. How did this remarkable change come about? What role did government, the private sector and other actors play in this? What are the links between this environmental change and wider changes in the Saint Lucian economy, politics and society? Is there more to this story than meets the eye? These questions are explored in this interdisciplinary study of changing human-environment relations since the Second World War. The Greening of Saint Lucia is based on the results of a longterm, field-based research project that began in 2006. It entails the application of a novel research methodology for doing human-environment research (ACE: abductive causal eventism) that the author co-developed with a colleague from Rutgers University. This causal-historical methodology allows for the rigorous integration of findings derived from natural and social science sources, including ecological and air photo assessments, interviews, secondary data sources, and archival investigations.

Against the Grain - The Vayda Tradition in Human Ecology and Ecological Anthropology (Paperback): Bradley B. Walters, Bonnie J... Against the Grain - The Vayda Tradition in Human Ecology and Ecological Anthropology (Paperback)
Bradley B. Walters, Bonnie J McCay, Paige West, Susan Lees; Contributions by David J. Bart, …
R1,832 Discovery Miles 18 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

To rise to the increasingly urgent challenge of understanding the relationship between human beings and the environment, scholars need to step back and re-evaluate their basic premises about how current explanations should shape the form and content of their research. Against the Grain addresses a variety of topics in the field of human ecology, including ecological anthropology, evolutionary psychology, environmental history, and geography, and challenges scholars to re-think the adequacy of their methods and assumptions. Andrew P. Vayda concludes the volume with a critical commentary on these issues and, more widely, on the subject of explanation. The result is an extremely useful and provocative prZcis for thinking about, re-evaluating, and rectifying scholarly research.
