The phenomenon of multimodality has, as Jewitt observes, generated interest "across many disciplines...against the backdrop of considerable social change." Contemporary societies are grappling with the social implications of the rapid increase in sophistication and range of multimodal practices, particularly within interactive digital media, so that the study of multimodality also becomes essential within an increasing range of practical domains. As a result of this increasing interest in multimodality, scholars, teachers and practitioners are on the one hand uncovering many different issues arising from its study, such as those of theory and methodology, while also exploring multimodality within an increasing range of domains. Such an increase and range of interest in multimodality heralds the emergence of a distinct multimodal studies field: as both the mapping of a domain of enquiry, and as the site of the development of theories, descriptions and methodologies specific to and adapted for the study of multimodality. The present volume presents a range of works by an impressive international roster of contributors who both explore issues arising from the study of multimodality and explore the scope of this emerging field within specific domains of multimodal phenomena. Contributors aim to show that each individual work and works in general within multimodal studies represent a dialectic or complementarity between the exploration of issues of general significance to multimodal studies and the exploration of specific domains of multimodality; while characterizing specific works as tending to some degree towards one or other of these main areas of focus. Such a characterization is seen as part of a move towards the identification and thus development of a distinct field of multimodal studies.

Environmental Science: A Study of Interrelationships is a full-color, introductory environmental science text that is known for being concise, conceptual, and value-priced. The approach and reading level cover the basic concepts without overloading students with too much detail. The authors reinforce the text's central theme of "interrelationships" by providing a historical perspective, information on economic and political realities, discuss the role of different social experiences, and integrate this with the crucial science to describe the natural world and how we affect it.

Marcel arrives in London, from New Zealand, ready to start a new job and a new life away from the painful losses that he has experienced. The first day of work, he meets his boss's wife, Kate, who becomes an important friend to him. When one of his friends, Paul, is injured in a freak accident, Marcel must weigh the meaning of his life. Along the way we also meet Kristi, with whom Marcel had a failed relationship and who has now reentered his life, this time as a friend. Or is she? And Jeisa, a teacher who encounters a violent parent who makes her pay because his son is not able to learn effectively. The theme of La Decouverte is our carnal and spiritual nature and through our central character, Marcel - and five other important people with whom Marcel relates, we learn what this means. Through the discussions between Marcel and his friends, their dreams, and some mysterious deaths, we discover that spiritual enlightenment may be the eventual revelation.

The Oxford Handbook of Genetics provides an essential overview of this complex subject, distilled into an accessible format for primary care practitioners and junior doctors. It can be used as an aide memoire to gain advice on dealing with individual patients during the working day, or as a reference text to be read over time. Combining the expertise of leading geneticists with the knowledge of experienced general practitioners, the handbook covers the genetics core curriculum as defined by the Royal College of General Practitioners. It includes sections on elementary genetics, single gene disorders, and chromosomal problems, as well as information about the multifactorial diseases, such as ischaemic heart disease, with which practitioners are more familiar. There are also comprehensive sections on antenatal issues, and cancers. A comprehensive glossary with explanations of genetic terminology, and an extensive list of resources, make this book suitable for all healthcare professionals regardless of their level of knowledge or experience. Designed to cross the primary-secondary care interface, this unique handbook covers the gap between general health training and genetic specialist training, including specific advice about when, and how, to make a referral to a genetics service. Given the rapid growth in the genetic knowledge base, this book is designed to be both accessible and informative as a substantive educational resource for practitioners.
