Fra il 1976 ed il 1994 la Commodore ebbe un successo sbalorditivo nel nascente mercato dei personal computer. Fu la prima grande azienda ad esporre un personal computer, perfino prima della Apple e della Radio Shack. Vendette un milione di computer prima di chiunque altro. Nessun singolo computer ha venduto piu' del Commodore 64. Il primo vero computer multimediale, l'Amiga, venne dalla Commodore. Tuttavia, pur con tutte queste pietre miliari, alla Commodore non viene attribuito quasi alcun merito come pioniera. Mentre la Apple e la IBM praticavano prezzi esorbitanti, la Commodore fu in grado di raggiungere le masse con computer a buon mercato pur restando redditizia.
