Fictional recreation of the WWII Battle of Arnhem featuring performances from soldiers who fought in the actual battle. The Battle of Arnhem occurred in September 1944, when British and American forces led by Field Marshall Montgomery attempted to cross the Rhine and establish a presence in Holland. The ensuing fighting was frantic and chaotic and gave rise to the popular movie 'A Bridge Too Far'. This earlier effort, filmed little more than a year after the battle itself and featuring men such as Stanley Maxted and Thomas Scullion who actually participated in the conflict, provides a dramatic and hard-hitting insight into the experience of war.
Documentary-style war feature. The story compares wartime Germany, under the domination of a fanatical madman, with the dignified calm of rural England and follows Wing Commander Richardson (Ralph Richardson) as he engages in battles in the skies while his wife (Merle Oberon) waits patiently for his return.
Wartime drama starring Alec Guiness as Peter Ross, an RAF reconnaisance photographer assigned to trace and destroy an Italian convoy threatening to invade Malta. As the Luftwaffe threatens, Ross's romance with a local girl hangs in the balance.
