Nominal Apposition in Indo-European - Its Forms and Functions, and its Evolution in Latin-Romance (Hardcover): Brigitte L.M.... Nominal Apposition in Indo-European - Its Forms and Functions, and its Evolution in Latin-Romance (Hardcover)
Brigitte L.M. Bauer
R4,945 Discovery Miles 49 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nominal apposition-the combining of two equivalent nouns-has been a neglected topic in linguistics, despite its prominence in syntax and morphology in some languages. This book presents an extensive comparative and diachronic analysis of nominal apposition in Indo-European, examining its occurrence, characteristics and functions in early languages, identifying parallels with similar phenomena elsewhere, and tracing its evolution in Latin-Romance.

Brigitte L.M. Bauer, Georges-Jean Pinault
R7,407 Discovery Miles 74 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The honoree of this Festschrift has for many years now marked modern trends in diachronic and synchronic linguistics by his own publications and by stimulating those of numerous others. This collection of articles presents data-oriented studies that integrate modern and traditional approaches in the field, thus reflecting the honoree's contribution to contemporary linguistics. The articles relate to comparative data from (early) Indo-European languages and a variety of other languages and discuss the theoretical implications of phenomena such as linguistic universals, reconstruction, and language classification.

The Emergence and Development of SVO Patterning in Latin and French - Diachronic and Psycholinguistic Perspectives (Hardcover,... The Emergence and Development of SVO Patterning in Latin and French - Diachronic and Psycholinguistic Perspectives (Hardcover, New)
Brigitte L.M. Bauer
R2,037 Discovery Miles 20 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book analyses-in terms of branching-the pervasive reorganization of Latin syntactic and morphological structures: in the development from Latin to French, a shift can be observed from the archaic, left-branching structures (which Latin inherited from Proto-Indo-European) to modern right-branching equivalents. Brigitte Bauer presents a detailed analysis of this development based on the theoretical discussion and definition of "branching" and "head." Subsequently she relates the diachronic shift to psycholinguistic evidence, arguing that the difficuly of LB complex structures as reflected in their painstaking and delayed acquisition accounts for the extensive typological shift from left to right branching that took place in Latin/French and the other Indo-European languages. The author uses data from child language acquisition studies to support her thought-provoking claim.
