Students learn best when they are connecting with the language as used in real-world settings, with each other as a community and with authentic culture. En avant! sparks the curiosity that builds these connections as students advance toward communicative and cultural competence in the introductory classroom. The En avant! program is built around the following distinctive principles: * A focused approach with systematic review and recycling* Active learning* Integration of culture Now in its third edition, En avant! includes many targeted changes prompted by reviewer feedback to more readily engage students with the grammatical and cultural content while making that content even more user-friendly and logical. In our revision process, we placed the biggest emphasis on creating and integrating new features, based on the ACTFL World Readiness Standards, in order to better engage and inspire a new, digitally minded generation of French learners.
Policy Making and Southern Distinctiveness examines the uniqueness of southern politics and their policy choices. While decades of scholarship on the politics of the American South have focused on partisanship and electoral outcomes as the primary elements of interest in southern politics, few works have focused on the more practical outcomes of these political processes, specifically, comparing state policy choices of southern states to non-southern states. This book examines six different policy arenas: voting access, gun control, health care, reproductive rights, water, and COVID-19 pandemic response, comparing policy choices in states in the South with states in the non-South. The authors find that the South is distinct in several, but not all, of the policy arenas examined. They conclude that the South as a region is unique because of the exceptional degree of one-party control evident in the South, coupled with a long-standing preoccupation with partisanship and race-based politics. Policy Making and Southern Distinctiveness provides valuable insights into how and why states behave in the manner they do and where southern states may diverge from the rest of the country. It will be of interest to scholars of southern politics, state comparative policy, public policy, American politics, and federalism/intergovernmental relations.

A collection of children's animated adventures from the Blue Sky studios. In 'Epic' (2013), Mary Katherine (voice of Amanda Seyfried) lives in a cabin in the woods with her eccentric father, Professor Bomba (Jason Sudeikis), who studies the local fauna. One day, when he doesn't return from a hike in the forest, she sets out to find him, inadvertently stumbling across some strange glowing leaves. Clutching one, Mary Katherine is shrunken down to the forest floor, where, after meeting up with a group of warriors known as the Leafmen, she finds herself helping her new friends in their war to save their world from the clutches of the evil Boggans. In 'Horton Hears a Who!' (2008), a jungle elephant named Horton (Jim Carrey) discovers a race of tiny beings living in a solitary dandelion. Recognising the dangers they face, the friendly pachyderm resolves to keep his microscopic pals safe. However, as Horton is the only one who hears the inhabitants of 'Whoville', his other animal pals are convinced he's gone crazy and resolve to do something about it. Horton and his miniscule friends must struggle against these impossible odds to prevent disaster. In 'Ice Age' (2002), a group of three animals embark upon an epic journey at the dawn of the great ice age. Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo), Manfred the woolly mammoth (Ray Romano), and Diego the sabre-toothed tiger (Denis Leary) team up to help return a human baby to its father, and must risk life and limb as they traverse boiling lava pits and travel through dangerous ice caves to complete their mission. In 'Ice Age 2: The Meltdown' (2006), Manny is ready to start a family, but nobody has seen another mammoth for a long time; in fact, Manny thinks he may be the last one. That is until he miraculously finds Ellie (Queen Latifah), the only female mammoth left in the world. The only problem is, they can't stand each other... In 'Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs' (2009), Scrat the squirrel (Chris Wedge) is still trying to get his paws on that ever-elusive nut, Manny and Ellie anxiously await the birth of their mini-mammoth, and Diego wonders if he's growing too laid-back living the life of a pampered house cat. Meanwhile, Sid the sloth gets into trouble when he creates his own makeshift family by hijacking some unusually large eggs, and inadvertently discovers a mysterious underground world where dinosaurs still roam. In 'Ice Age 4: Continental Drift' (2012), when the entire continent is set adrift following a global cataclysm, Manny, Diego and Sid find themselves separated from the rest of the herd. Commandeering a nearby iceberg as a makeshift boat, they take to the high seas. Fearsome sea creatures and battlethirsty pirates are among the challenges faced by the intrepid trio as they ride the waves of the world in search of their family. In 'Rio' (2011), Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) is a rare macaw living in a bookshop in small-town Minnesota. I am a result of the Vietnam War, actually-the "Secret War" in Laos--a bastard son of an American soldier stationed in Udon Thani during the decades-long Indochina conflict. When American soldiers moved into Udon Air Force Base, the promise of great opportunities and riches excited many impoverished villagers around the rural Isaan farmlands; long overlooked by the Thai government. My mother, a young woman at the time, embraced this chance to make money, and even dreamed of being married off to a rich Tahaan Falaang who would take her away from the misery of subsistence living-a poor rural Isaan woman's fantasy that evaporated the moment the Americans packed up and went home. With mounting pressure to survive in these rural lands, my mother did what many women in the same situation did-dropped me off at an orphanage. It was a journey that shredded my spirit and buried me deep in despair. I had no choice but to reach out into the unknown. Fate took me there. But a miracle brought me out...
The idea of this book, the first in a series, is to give readers a sense of what vast Mendocino County is like, really like, from its beginnings to now. The contents derive from my readings of the scant formal histories of the county, and from my readings of the slightly more abundant memoirs of early settlers. My experiences are mixed in, and some of the book is autobiographical because you may want to know something about the person telling you these things. My family's history is intertwined in mostly oblique ways with the county, whose written history commenced with its merciless first settlers, the long, lethal sons of Missouri who rode west from the gold fields to occupy what must have seemed to them an endless, empty Eden of well-watered little valleys. But there had been people in this Eden for 12,000 years. Those people were annhilated before they could teach us what only they knew. The bouncing ball of the narrative you'll find here moves back and forth across time conveying, I hope, my sense of an accelerating history of often absurd, often bloody events visited upon a uniquely beautiful part of the country.
