Evil in Contemporary Political Theory (Paperback): Bruce Haddock, Peri Roberts, Peter Sutch Evil in Contemporary Political Theory (Paperback)
Bruce Haddock, Peri Roberts, Peter Sutch
R857 Discovery Miles 8 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This title explores the actual and possible roles of evil in current-day international politics. Politicians and the press exploit the rhetorical strength of the word 'evil' in phrases such as 'evil regimes' or 'Axis of Evil'. But does it have any role in political theory? The contributors to this volume systematically explore the competing definitions of 'evil' and make sense of the political spin to discover how evil has shaped our judgements in humanitarian international law, post-conflict situations and the notion of forgiveness. They find suprising agreement in modern cultures on the evils that confront human communities - genocide, torture, slavery. It is here, where our tolerance reaches breaking point, that the concept of evil can be applied. It shows the usefulness of the concept of evil in the development of humanitarian international law, theorising post-conflict situations, the notion of forgiveness and making sense of political spin.

Idealism & Experience - The Philosophy of Guido de Ruggiero (Hardcover): Bruce Haddock, Rik Peters, James Wakefield Idealism & Experience - The Philosophy of Guido de Ruggiero (Hardcover)
Bruce Haddock, Rik Peters, James Wakefield
R1,833 Discovery Miles 18 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Guido de Ruggiero (1888-1948) was perhaps the greatest Italian intellectual historian in the twentieth century. He was a fierce champion of liberalism, an ardent opponent of Fascism, an insightful critic and interpreter of his contemporaries, and a formidable philosopher in his own right. Idealism & Experience: The Philosophy of Guido de Ruggiero comprises eight new critical essays, as well as English translations of five of de Ruggiero's most important shorter writings, which chart the development of his thought between 1914 and 1946. Taken together, these essays reveal the range, richness and philosophical sophistication of de Ruggiero's ideas, enabling Anglophone readers to appreciate their enduring relevance in our own troubled times.

Evil in Contemporary Political Theory (Hardcover): Bruce Haddock, Peri Roberts, Peter Sutch Evil in Contemporary Political Theory (Hardcover)
Bruce Haddock, Peri Roberts, Peter Sutch
R2,882 Discovery Miles 28 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What role should the idea of evil have in contemporary moral and social thought? The concept of 'evil' has long been a key idea in moral discourse. Now, the contributors to this volume make a start on the important task of systematically exploring evil in the context of political theory. Intuitively, we know what evil means. Yet once we begin to think about its meaning we quickly uncover competing definitions. In recent years, political theorists have generally set the concept aside as outdated or inappropriate. Yet the idea that some things are wrong beyond toleration still has significant currency. If 'evil' can capture that significance, it merits a closer look. Key Features: * Presents a broad ranging exploration of the idea of evil in contemporary theory * Offers a philosophical analysis of the role of evil in ethics * Analyses the idea of evil in classic arguments

Thought Thinking - The Philosophy of Giovanni Gentile (Hardcover): Bruce Haddock, James Wakefield Thought Thinking - The Philosophy of Giovanni Gentile (Hardcover)
Bruce Haddock, James Wakefield
R1,487 Discovery Miles 14 870 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Italian author Giovanni Gentile (1875-1944) occupied a radical position among philosophers of the first half of the twentieth century. He tried in earnest to revolutionize idealist theory, developing a doctrine that retained the idealist conception of the thinking subject as the centre and source of any intelligible reality, while eschewing many of the unwarranted abstractions that had pervaded earlier varieties of idealism and led their adherents astray. Given his great prominence during his lifetime, it is perhaps remarkable that Gentile is so little discussed, and even then so poorly understood, in the English-speaking world. Few of his works have ever been translated into English, and these represent only a fraction of his great corpus and the many topics discussed therein. This neglect is partly explained by his close association with the Partito Nazionale Fascista (National Fascist Party), of which he remained a loyal member and supporter between 1923 and his assassination in 1944. The volume comprises eleven essays. Seven of these are new pieces written especially for Thought Thinking, and are intended both to contribute to ongoing debates about Gentile's philosophy and to indicate just a few of its many aspects that continue to draw the attention of philosophers, political theorists and intellectual historians. These are supplemented by new English translations of four of Gentile's shorter works, selected to offer some direct insight into his ideas and style of writing.

Historical Essay on the Neapolitan Revolution of 1799 (Hardcover): Vincenzo Cuoco Historical Essay on the Neapolitan Revolution of 1799 (Hardcover)
Vincenzo Cuoco; Edited by Bruce Haddock, Filippo Sabetti; Translated by David Gibbons
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Deeply influenced by Enlightenment writers from Naples and France, Vincenzo Cuoco (1770-1823) was forced into exile for his involvement in the failed Neapolitan revolution of 1799. Living in Milan, he wrote what became one of the nineteenth century's most important treatises on political revolution. In his Historical Essay on the Neapolitan Revolution of 1799, Cuoco synthesized the work of Machiavelli, Vico, and Enlightenment philosophers to offer an explanation for why and how revolutions succeed or fail. A major influence on political thought during the unification of Italy, the Historical Essay was also an inspiration to twentieth-century thinkers such as Benedetto Croce and Antonio Gramsci. This critical edition, featuring an authoritative translation, introduction, and annotations, finally makes Cuoco's work fully accessible to an English-speaking audience.
