Today, researchers in moral education widely regard moral reasoning
as but one among at least 4 dimensions of moral development
alongside moral motivation, moral character and moral sensitivity.
Reflecting these developments, educationalists in the diverse
fields of medicine, education, business, philosophy and nursing now
openly question how to take professional ethics education beyond
the development of skills in moral reasoning. Frequently topping
the list of suggested improvements is to provide support for
empathic capacities of response, This work gives this proposal the
sustained attention that it deserves hut which it has until now
lacked. The challenge of empathic development in practical ethics
education, it argues, is to encourage the appropriate extension of
natural concern for one's kith and kin to the needs of strangers as
well.--BOOK JACKET.
"This is an excellent overview of the latest thinking in weed
management, with chapters written by some of the most prominent
authorities conducting research today... the book is a valuable
addition to the literature, and one that will be widely used as a
key reference". Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems Weeds
remain a major obstacle to increased yields. Past reliance on
herbicides is no longer sufficient with increasing concerns about
environmental effects, regulation and resistance. This has led to
the development of integrated weed management (IWM) which includes
herbicides as part of a broader array of cultural, physical and
biological methods of control. This volume reviews key research on
the use of IWM in sustainable agriculture. Parts 1 and 2 introduce
weed ecology and IWM principles, including surveillance, risk
assessment and planning an IWM programme. Part 3 summarises the
role of herbicides in IWM whilst Part 4 reviews the range of
cultural and physical methods of weed control. The final part of
the book surveys biological techniques for weed control. With its
eminent editor and international range of expert authors, this will
be a standard reference for weed scientists, the agricultural
community and the pesticide industry as well as government and
non-governmental agencies supporting a more sustainable
agriculture.

The Importance of Philosophy in Teacher Education maps the gradual
decline of philosophy as a central, integrated part of educational
studies. Chapters consider how this decline has impacted teacher
education and practice, offering new directions for the
reintegration of philosophical thinking in teacher preparation and
development. Touching on key points in history, this valuable
collection of chapters accurately appraises the global decline of
philosophy of education in teacher education programs and seeks to
understand the external and endemic causes of changed attitudes
towards a discipline which was once assigned such a central place
in teacher education. Chapters illustrate how a grounding in the
theoretical and ethical dimensions of teaching, learning, and
education systems contribute in meaningful ways to being a good
teacher, and trace the consequences of a decline in philosophy on
individuals' professional development and on the evolution of the
teaching profession more broadly. With this in mind, the text
focusses on the future of teacher education and considers how we
can ensure that philosophy of education feeds into the excellence
of teaching today. This book will be of great interest to graduate,
postgraduate students as well as research scholars in the field of
educational philosophy and history of education. In addition, it
will be useful for those involved in teacher education, and in
particular, course, module and program development.

Education, as an academic field taught at universities around the
world, emerged from a range of disciplines including philosophy,
history, sociology, politics/policy, economics and law. Educational
Foundations is the first reference work to provide an authoritative
state-of-the-field mapping of these foundational disciplines,
showing the ideas, methods, theories and approaches that each of
them contributes to field of education. Each of the six volumes is
devoted to the examination of a constituent discipline, namely:
Philosophical Foundations of Education (Volume 1) Historical
Foundations of Education (Volume 2) Sociological Foundations of
Education (Volume 3) Policy Foundations of Education (Volume 4)
Economic Foundations of Education (Volume 5) Legal Foundations of
Education (Volume 6) Each volume covers the same set of key topics
within education which also form the chapter titles, those
topics/chapters are: Mapping the Field, Purposes of Education,
Curriculum, Schools and Education Systems, Learning and Human
Development, Teaching and Teacher Education, Assessment and
Evaluation. This structure allows readers to study the volumes in
isolation, by discipline, or laterally by topic, allowing for
comparative, thematic readings of chapters across the volumes.
Particular attention is paid to social justice issues throughout
the volumes with the authors showing how each discipline works to
combat social justice issues including race, gender, sexuality and
disability. Students, researchers and faculty in education
departments rarely have a thorough knowledge of all of the
foundational disciplines and yet foundations remains a staple
aspect of teacher education and education programmes around the
world. This set allows readers to focus in on the specific gaps in
their knowledge. Including 48 chapters written by renowned
international scholars, this work will define the educational
foundations for generations to come.
