The interiors of Danish ships of the mid-twentieth century were
exceptionally elegant and glamorous. Here, the story of the
development of Danish architect-designed ship interiors is told for
the first time. In the twentieth century the Danish merchant fleet
expanded greatly to become internationally known for its modernity
and efficiency. Ashore, meanwhile, Denmark came to embrace the
Modern Movement in architecture and design. Danish shipping
companies began to employ prominent architects to design their new
vessels' passenger accommodation, it was this approach that most
often was applied. Here, the story of the development of Danish
architect-designed ship interiors is told for the first time. The
work is based upon over twenty years of research by the author and
includes interviews with key archtictects who were directly
involved in designing shipboard interiors and furniture between the
1930s and the 1990s, as well as extensive archival research. The
interiors of Danish ships of the mid-twentieth century were
exceptionally elegant and glamorous and they reflected the best of
a national creative culture that is nowadays widely admired around
the world.

Art Deco by the Sea is a major new book and exhibition examining
British coastal culture between the First and Second World Wars.
Beautifully illustrated, the book will trace how the British
seaside changed during a new age of mass tourism. It will examine
how coastal resorts developed and how the networks of transport
that serviced them - by road, rail and sea - were modernised. The
book will celebrate iconic examples of Art Deco architecture, from
hotels and apartment blocks to piers, cinemas and sea fronts and
will show how Art Deco became the key style for pleasure and
entertainment. It will also feature seaside companies including
Poole Pottery, E.K. Cole Ltd and Crysede known for their striking
modern designs. The book will also explore how the seaside changed
during the 1920s and 30s with the advent of the heathy body
culture, when sunbathing, swimming and a host of other outdoor
activities became fashionable. The development of amenities such as
lidos and golf courses changed the look of seaside resorts while
holiday camps such as Butlin's provided new types of holiday
experience. The book will feature Deco fashions and the more
ephemeral and popular culture of the seaside from theatre
performances, circuses, fairgrounds, casinos and fun fairs.
Statistical methods are a key part of data science, yet few data
scientists have formal statistical training. Courses and books on
basic statistics rarely cover the topic from a data science
perspective. The second edition of this popular guide adds
comprehensive examples in Python, provides practical guidance on
applying statistical methods to data science, tells you how to
avoid their misuse, and gives you advice on what’s important and
what’s not. Many data science resources incorporate statistical
methods but lack a deeper statistical perspective. If you’re
familiar with the R or Python programming languages and have some
exposure to statistics, this quick reference bridges the gap in an
accessible, readable format. With this book, you’ll learn: Why
exploratory data analysis is a key preliminary step in data science
How random sampling can reduce bias and yield a higher-quality
dataset, even with big data How the principles of experimental
design yield definitive answers to questions How to use regression
to estimate outcomes and detect anomalies Key classification
techniques for predicting which categories a record belongs to
Statistical machine learning methods that "learn" from data
Unsupervised learning methods for extracting meaning from unlabeled
data
Authoritative and readable, this excellent text, illustrated by a
unique pictorial record of period architecture, surveys and
examines how and why the architecture of pleasure related to the
stylistic and ideological concerns of modernism in 1930s Britain.
Responding to the current interest in modernism and packed with a
substantial archive of high quality photographs and other
documentation, it relates the professional, entrepreneurial and
institutional infrastructures affecting the pleasure industry's
architectural development and appearance in 1930s. A broad range of
building through which the general public first experienced
Modernism are covered, including: commercial - holiday camps,
cinemas and greyhound racing stadia municipal and governmental
projects - zoos, seaside pavilions, concert halls, and imperial and
international exhibitions. Arguing that the responses to modernism
through the architecture of pleasure were conditioned by wider
debates about the role of design in relation to high and mass
culture, this book is an ideal resource for all those interested in
architectural history and design in Britain between the wars.

The Story of the Kappel Propeller tells the story of a remarkable
adventure in engineering design innovation. The propeller gives a
significant energy saving over conventional designs with consequent
economic and environmental benefits. Here, the thirty-year history
of the design's development from initial idea to working prototype
is told for the first time.
Through a combination of business acumen and technical innovation
in the twentieth century, Danish shipping lines gradually expanded,
gaining market share by undercutting less efficient rivals. In this
book, the histories of Denmark's major liner companies - DFDS, EAC,
Maersk and Torm - are recorded and successful innovations,
particularly the development by Burmeister & Wain of reliably
efficient marine diesel engines, are documented. In recent time,
Danish shipping companies - particularly Maersk Line - have played
major roles in bringing about the phenomenon of 'globalisation' as
the switch from general cargo to shipping containers has enabled
goods to be moved for long distances securely and at
unprecedentedly low cost. Consequently, value chains are nowadays
spread across oceans and continents. Indeed, the modern-day
super-container ship, exemplified by Maersk's new Triple-E class,
symbolises our contemporary world of mass production, distribution
and consumerism.
A major influence on the education of young children since the late
nineteenth century, the philosophical and practical tenets of
Frobelian early childhood education require urgent re-articulation
in light of current debate and developments in research and policy.
This seminal Handbook responds to this need, drawing together a
unique and valuable body of literature, research and case studies
to make explicit the specific features of Froebelian education and
provide key impulses for future research and practice in this area.
Chapters present the sometimes divergent perspectives of leading
educationalists, and so offer a uniquely comprehensive overview of
Froebelian approaches and their interaction with contemporary
policies and insights. The Handbook explores five significant areas
of scholarship and practice: Part I examines the original
Froebelian principles and practices in early childhood education in
different parts of the world. Part II presents case studies,
development projects and practitioner publications exploring
Froebelian approaches to early childhood education. Part III
details research studies which document, debate and evaluate
Froebelian approaches. Part IV considers how Froebelian approaches
might be sustained and adapted for use in various cultural contexts
across the world. Part V offers a re-articulation of research and
policy. An essential resource for in-service and future
practitioners, researchers and policy-makers involved in early
childhood education, this key text will promote discussion, aid
analysis and further the practical application of Frobelian
principles.
