Collection of five western feature films. 'The Searchers' (1956) tells the story of Ethan Edwards (John Wayne), an ex-confederate soldier who swears revenge after his brother's family is butchered by Comanches and his niece (Natalie Wood) is kidnapped. Accompanied by Martin Pawley (Jeffrey Hunter), Ethan sets out on an epic seven-year search for the missing girl. In 'Pale Rider' (1985) a community of gold mining prospectors comes under attack from a gang of marauders who are after the prospectors' land. Young Megan Wheeler (Sydney Penny) prays for help, which consequently arrives in the form of the Preacher (Clint Eastwood), a grim, silent stranger. In 'The Wild Bunch' (1969), set in 1913, a gang of outlaws (William Holden, Ernest Borgnine and Warren Oates, amongst others) ride into a Texan border town where the railroad office is their target. The robbery turns into a blood-bath so the gang flee to a desert hideout where they discover that their loot is worthless... In 'Rio Bravo' (1959) Sheriff John T. Chance (Wayne) is holding a murderous villain in his cell while waiting for a magistrate to collect him for trial. The criminal's associates are desperate to free him and will stop at nothing to achieve their goal... 'How the West Was Won' (1962) traces the fortunes of several generations of an American pioneer family as they move West and cope with the Civil War. The film's several sections were made by different directors, including Henry Hathaway and John Ford. Spencer Tracy narrates, while Henry Fonda, Gregory Peck, James Stewart and John Wayne top the all-star bill.

Kristy McNichol, Paul Winfield and Burl Ives star in this American drama directed by Samuel Fuller. When young actress Julie (McNichol) unwittingly runs over a white Alsation one night, she panics and takes the animal to the vet. While trying to find the stray dog's owners Julie takes him home with her where he proves useful as he fends off an attack from a rapist. Suspecting that something is not quite right with the dog, Julie takes it to a specialist trainer where she learns that the dog has been trained to attack black people. Can Julie and the trainer reprogramme the dog into being the loving family pet he once was?

In 'Joe Kidd' (1972) Eastwood plays a drunken tracker coerced by American business tycoon Robert Duvall to go in search of Mexican agitator John Saxon. The film is scripted by renowned crime writer Elmore Leonard. In 'The Outlaw Josey Wales', Josey Wales (Eastwood) is a peaceful farmer at the time of the American Civil War who becomes a Confederate outlaw in order to avenge his family's death at the hands of Union guerillas. His obsession with revenge slowly lifts, however, as he picks up various outcasts in the wilderness. Wales tries to protect his new 'family' by leading them to a safe haven where they can rebuild their lives. Finally in 'Unforgiven, it is 1880s Kansas and ageing gunslinger-turned-farmer William Munny (Eastwood) reluctantly agrees to come out of retirement to help Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman) collect the bounty on a wanted murderer. The man in question cut up a prostitute in a lawless town lorded over by the corrupt Sheriff Daggett (Gene Hackman), and if Munny and Logan want to catch him they are going to have to deal with Daggett first. A gritty western which brought a new level of critical respect to its director, Clint Eastwood, winning him the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director (it also picked up the Best Supporting Actor award for Gene Hackman).

Collection of six Westerns. In 'Man in the Shadow' (1957) wealthy tyrant Virgil Renchler (Orson Welles) rules over cow town Spurline from his Golden Empire ranch. When his henchmen kill a young worker, Sheriff Ben Sadler (Jeff Chandler) investigates but meets resistance not only from those responsible but also from the local people who are afraid their town will suffer without Renchler's business. In 'Law and Order' (1953), after his attempts to bring peace to Tombstone prove futile due the townspeople's disregard for the justice system, Marshal Frame Johnson (Ronald Reagan) decides to move to Cottonwood along with his girlfriend Jeannie (Dorothy Malone) and his brothers Lute (Alex Nicol) and Jimmy (Russell Johnson). Johnson and his brothers build a ranch where he hopes to settle down but his wish for a peaceful life is dashed when he realises that the people of Cottonwood are just as corrupt as those he left behind. The local judge seeks his help to bring law and order to the town and though initially reluctant, Johnson finally accepts the challenge when his brothers are targeted by criminals. In 'Ride Clear of Diablo' (1954) corrupted lawyer Tom (William Pullen) and sheriff Fred (Paul Birch) steal stock from the O'Mara ranch, killing the owner and his young son in the process. When railroad surveyor Clay O'Mara (Audie Murphy) hears about the murder of his father and brother he returns home to seek out those responsible. Encouraged by Tom, Fred makes Clay his deputy, and while he plans to use his new status for the benefit of his investigation, the killers instead send him after gunslinger Whitey Kinkaid (Dan Duryea), hoping he will take Clay down. However, Clay deals with Kinkaid and sets out to capture the real culprits. 'The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid' (1972) is based on the real-life James-Younger gang of outlaws and their final bank robbery in September 1876. After being granted immunity by the state of Missouri, Jesse James (Robert Duvall) and Cole Younger (Cliff Robertson) plan one last raid with the First National Bank of Northfield as their target. However, the robbery does not go accordingly and the gang find themselves under fire from the local citizens. Will the outlaws escape with their freedom and their lives? In 'Border River' (1954), during the American Civil War, Major Clete Mattson (Joel McCrea) arrives at Mexican enclave Zona Libre, having stolen two millon dollars of Union money with which he plans to purchase firearms for the Confederacy. The tyrannical General Eduardo Calleja (Pedro Armendariz) who runs Zona Libre offers him a safe haven for a substantial fee. However, the general's girlfriend Carmelita (Yvonne De Carlo), who develops feelings for Mattson, warns him that Calleja can't be trusted... In 'Horizons West' (1952), after the Civil War, brothers Dan (Robert Ryan) and Neal Drummond (Rock Hudson) return home to their Texas ranch. While Neal is satisfied with the quiet life of running a small ranch, Dan is eager to expand the business and create an empire. When he has a run-in with the ruthless Cord Hardin (Raymond Burr), Dan ends up breaking the law in order to fulfil his desire for power. Meanwhile, Neal becomes a lawman and must hold Dan accountable for his crimes.

The first in the series of films featuring Lieutenant Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) - a right wing, bad-tempered San Francisco policeman, not averse to bending the rules to get his man. The maniacal 'Scorpio Killer' is on the loose and Callahan disregards procedure in his efforts to track him down, using his trusty Magnum .44 to dispense his own brand of justice. Somewhat surprisingly, the film was conceived as a vehicle for Frank Sinatra.
