Mad Dogs and Englishmen is a collection of Bryn's shooting and dog
cartoons. It gives an insight into a world that can really only be
understood by a participant for whom it is more than a sport; it is
a way of life.
The fifth edition of Successful Event Management covers every
aspect of events management, from the planning and set up process
through to delivery, close-down and evaluation. The wealth of case
studies includes both successful and failed events, allowing you to
really understand how the principles described in the text can
affect the outcome of an event.
Facilities planning for tourism, hospitality and events (THE) is an
important subject from both theoretical and applied perspectives,
as land, property and resources represent major components of the
foundation of the industry. As future managers, it is imperative
that students have a sound basic knowledge of property and the
various resources, systems and services associated with it.
Covering important contemporary subjects such as sustainable
planning and environmental management, this book considers the
planning, development and management of facilities operations from
several key perspectives, drawing upon the expertise of
complementary experts in the design, management and development of
THE facilities.
Some time late in the last century, Giles Catchpole and Bryn Parry
began to catalogue the varied characters to be found in the
shooting field and the results of their researches have been
published monthly in The Shooting Gazette. Now, they have loaded up
another game bag's worth of sharply written and wittily observed
Shooting Types and unleashed them onto an expectant readership
through The Second Barrel. Here is an extended line of assorted
Guns, good and not so good. Some shoot like gods, quite a lot
don't. Some own dogs that retrieve what they have shot and some
have dogs who chase what they haven't. There is a supporting cast
of spouses, partners and significant others - some being supportive
and others less so. And then there are the keepers, beaters,
pickers-up, hosts and hostesses without whom the whole undertaking
would be utterly impossible and therefore no fun at all. If you
shoot or go shooting you will recognise many of the characters in
this book. You may remember them with a sigh of pleasure or a gasp
of horror, or something in between. Who knows, you might even see
aspects of yourself here, or if you can't, the person who gave this
book to you probably does.
This is a salutary tale of the 'adventures' of a pair of extremely
innocent backpackers (one a debutante in this form of vacational
masochism) as they embark on two, climatically very different,
trips on the near continent. Seeking shelter each night sometimes
in their tiny tent and at other times in accommodation of a very
dubious kind (the names of these establishments have been changed
to protect the guilty) they set about exploring some of Western
Europe's major cities. Their routes take in the delights, and
dangers, to be found in, amongst others, -Barcelona, Madrid, Paris,
Lisbon, Marseilles, Bordeaux, Amsterdam, Lyon, Salamanca, Geneva
etc. You name it, and they had a traumatic 'arthropod-related
experience' there. They also managed to be the victims of two
robberies in the space of one, extremely uncomfortable, evening and
contracted most of the holiday ailments known to modern
medicine.... Oh yes, and they had to witness a totally gratuitous
display of 'fancy dress nudity' which would have broken lesser men
Were these two 'adherents of the pack' hapless or unlucky in
befalling these tribulations? Well, I'm still not sure but I do
know that they did survive to tell the tale in all its grimy, in
need of a proper wash, detail.
Oops, missed again! Now you have an excuse, or 101 to be exact...
This little book is the answer for any shot that misses from time
to time and an explanation is needed, "The bird swerved", "I'm
stiff from too much shooting", "I'm missing intentionally to make
them fly higher", these are just a few of the examples that could
just save you! Bryn's wonderful cartoons illustrate his excuses
perfectly and make this book the essential gift for every shooter.
At 6 inches square it's also the perfect size to keep in the
pocket. So, if you miss, whip it out and select the perfect
phrase...it could even be "Sorry, I was reading 101 Shooting
Excuses and didn't see that".
'During the Second World War, I worked in an empty building by the
Thames. It had been used by the Thames Conservancy Board. When war
came, they moved out and I was moved in. I stayed there for most of
the war. I never went down to an air raid shelter. I was too busy
trying to make people laugh about wartime bread and sausages,
instead of crying about them.' - Mabel Lucie Attwell Mabel Lucie
Attwell was one of Britain's best-loved artists with her work
touching generations, from those who grew up with her classic
characters, Bunty and the Boo-Boos, to those who have read Charles
Kingsley's The Water Babies, which she famously illustrated. Her
art has found its way into homes across the world through
figurines, bathroom plaques and gift cards featuring her charming
designs. Yet, many of her most poignant and humorous illustrations
were created to cheer a world at war. She painted prolifically
throughout the First and Second World Wars, with postcards
featuring her child-like characters and tongue-in-cheek captions
that were typical of her saucy sense of humour. Despite suffering
loss and hardship herself during the wars she continued to
encourage people to 'smile through the tears'. This book which
brings a collection of her wartime postcards together exclusively
for the first time, pays tribute to the indomitable spirit of this
incredible woman and to her art that cannot fail to raise a smile
today for young and old alike.
