This book demonstrates that during the early twentieth century, the
Monroe Doctrine served the role of a national security framework
that justified new directions in United States foreign relations
when the nation emerged as one of the world's leading imperial
powers. As the United States' overseas empire expanded in the wake
of the Spanish-American War, the nation's decision-makers engaged
in a protracted debate over the meaning and application of the
doctrine, aligning it to two antithetical core values
simultaneously: regional hegemony in the Western Hemisphere on the
one hand, and Pan-Americanism on the other. The doctrine's
fractured meaning reflected the divisions that existed among
domestic perceptions of the nation's new role on the world stage
and directed the nation's approach to key historical events such as
the acquisition of the Philippines, the Mexican Revolution, the
construction of the Panama Canal, the First World War, and the
debate over the League of Nations.

Edited and with an Introduction by Serene Sue Hilsinger and Lois Brynes
The steady growth of May Sarton's following and critical importance has revealed a creative writer of remarkable scopeequally at home in three literary forms: fiction, autobiography, and poetry.
It is her poetry, however, where she achieves the full extent of her revelation as artist and human. The poems in this first selection from her whole work were written over a period of forty years. They convey a wonderfully energetic alteration of mood, idea, and experience that are part of her unique creative process.
As the editors say, the arrangement of this selection is not chronological; rather it is arranged so as to clarify and preserve Sarton's rhythms of voice of voice, vision and inner passions. here are occasional poems exploring the private moments of erotic love as well as a public event such as the Kent State killings, and the voice expressing these occasions ranges from the pastoral to the polemical. The tone ranges from the lyrical to the dissonant, the form from closed couplet to strong, clean free verse.
One pervading theme is the poet's exploration of the creative process itself, its sources both within and without, its strong unforgiving demands and the fears and joys it can bring.
In all, it is a superb selection, a fascinating guide to the thought, emotions, and intuitions of May Sarton. It will be of enormous help to the student and a revelation to those who know Sarton only through her novels and her journals.
CUA Press is proud to announce the CUA Studies in Canon Law. In
conjunction with the School of Canon Law of the Catholic University
of America, we are making available, both digitally and in print,
more than 400 canon law dissertations from the 1920s to 1960s, many
of which have long been unavailable. These volumes are rich in
historical content, yet remain relevant to canon lawyers today.
Topics covered include such issues as abortion, excommunication,
and infertility. Several studies are devoted to marriage and the
annulment process; the acquiring and disposal of church property,
including the union of parishes; the role and function of priests,
vicars general, bishops, and cardinals; and juridical procedures
within the church. For those who seek to understand current
ecclesial practices in light of established canon law, these books
will be an invaluable resource.
This edition of "Manon Lescaut" incorporates an English
introduction and footnotes. It assesses the persuasiveness of the
self-justifying narrative which lies at the heart of the book, and
on interpreting the motivation of the main characters whose tragic
love-affair the novel charts.
