Sport is commonly used by charities and philanthropic organisations
as a way of acquiring donors and fundraisers. In this
ground-breaking study, Kyle Bunds examines the nexus of sport,
politics and the charity industry through an investigation of water
development agencies that raise funds in the developed world to
build water systems in the developing world. Using innovative
auto-ethnographic research methods, this book examines the links
between water charities, charity running events and water
development projects in the UK, USA, Canada and Africa. By
exploring the political economy of philanthropy from a critical
perspective, it suggests new ways in which to support and improve
the relationships between sport, wider society and the environment.
Posing important questions about the potential environmental impact
of sport on an international level, this study presents a
compelling vision of the future of water charities across the
globe. Sport, Politics and the Charity Industry: Running for Water
is fascinating reading for all those interested in sport and
politics, sports geography, sport and the environment, sports
development, or sport and the charity industry.

After Napoleon's victories over Austria and Prussia, he rearranged
the map of Germany. In 1807, he created the Kingdom of Westphalia
as a model state within the Confederation of the Rhine. The
Kingdom, with its French-based internal organization, was supposed
to serve as a model for the desired structures of the other member
states of the Confederation of the Rhine. Napoleon's brother,
Jerome Bonaparte, was installed as Westphalia's king. The Kingdom
was essentially assembled from the conquered lands of the Electoral
Principality of Hesse, the Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel
and the Prussian territories east of the Elbe River. In 1810, the
territories of the former Electoral Principality of Hanover were
added. Because Napoleon considered the Confederation of the Rhine
to be primarily a military alliance, the Westphalian Army was of
special importance. Its army was also organized completely on the
French model. The authors describe the army's structure and its
employment, including its operations in Spain, Germany, and Russia.
Yet the focus of the book is on providing a comprehensive depiction
of the colorful uniforms of the individual units, as well as their
military actions. Along with that, it addresses in detail the
branches that are usually overlooked, like administration, medical
service, national guard, gendarmerie, etc. The book draws on all
the available sources in order to put together this very
comprehensive overview. It is, without doubt, the definitive work
on the Westphalian army. It is extensively illustrated with Peter
Bunde's uniform graphics, contemporary images, maps, and photos of
museum pieces (uniforms, equipment, etc.). It also contains order
of battle, generals' biographies and other information drawn from
myriad sources.
This book deals with randomly moving objects and their spreading.
The objects considered are particles like atoms and molecules, but
also living beings such as humans, animals, plants, bacteria and
even abstract entities like ideas, rumors, information, innovations
and linguistic features. The book explores and communicates the
laws behind these movements and reports about astonishing
similarities and very specific features typical of the given object
under considerations. Leading scientists in disciplines as diverse
as archeology, epidemics, linguistics and sociology, in
collaboration with their colleagues from engineering, natural
sciences and mathematics, introduce the phenomena of spreading as
relevant for their fields. An introductory chapter on "Spreading
Fundamentals" provides a common basis for all these considerations,
with a minimum of mathematics, selected and presented for enjoying
rather than frustrating the reader.
The fractal concept has become an important tool for understanding
irregular complex systems in various scientific disciplines. This
book discusses in great detail fractals in biology, heterogeneous
chemistry, polymers, and the earth sciences. Beginning with a
general introduction to fractal geometry it continues with eight
chapters on self-organized criticality, rough surfaces and
interfaces, random walks, chemical reactions, and fractals in
chemistry, biology, and medicine. A special chapter entitled
"Computer Exploration of Fractals, Chaos, and Cooperativity"
presents computer demonstrations of fractal models.
During the Napoleon era, the Kingdom of Bavaria among the France's
German allied states, provided the largest contingent with 30,000
soldiers and due to its size took part in decisive fighting in the
1809 and 1812 campaigns. In this book, the authors present a
comprehensive work about the organization and individual branches
of the Bavarian Army, their uniforms, the regulations for its
deployment and the missions of the individual branches in the
field, as well as the army's internal structure. These descriptions
are supplemented by accounts of the Bavarians' combat engagements
in the campaigns of 1806-07 against Prussia and Russia, of 1809
against Austria, of 1812 against Russia, as well as of 1813 against
Prussia and Russia.
This book was planned and drafted even before the oil crisis at the
end of 1973 drama tically highlighted the importance of research in
the field of power production. This turn of events has by no means
detracted from the value of the material presented. On the
contrary, research on the rational exploitation of energy resources
has gained in importance. The development of MHD generators is one
of the fields which, it is hoped, will make an important
contribution. It is nowadays no longer sufficient, however, just to
perform good work. The national treasury, i.e. the taxpayer,
allocates considerable funds for scientific research, and the
public is therefore entitled to a reasonable account of the results
achieved in R&D work. A monograph such as this seems to be the
most suitable vehicle for the purpose. Furthermore, in keeping with
modern research a group from Max-Planck-Institut fur Plasmaphysik
combined with a group from a major industrial company, Maschinen
fabrik Augsburg-Ntirnberg AG (M.A.N.), to launch a joint project.
The close coopera tion between research establishments and industry
will doubtless be intensified."
The Munich Security Conference, founded as "Wehrkundetagung" in
1963, has evolved into the leading independent forum for security
policy. Traditionally seen as a kind of transatlantic family
meeting for debating NATO strategy during the Cold War, the
conference has increasingly broadened its agenda and today attracts
participants from across the globe. Each year, dozens of heads of
state and government, ministers, and experts from different fields
of security policy gather in Munich for an open exchange of ideas
and policies on the most pressing international security issues -
ranging from regional conflicts, international peace operations and
nuclear disarmament to cyber security and environmental challenges.
On the occasion of the conference's 50th anniversary in 2014, a
number of prominent participants, including former and current
foreign and defense ministers, reflect on the conference's history
and significance, some of the major issues debated, and on key
security challenges facing the international community.
The moving body-pervasively occupied by fitness activities, intense
training and dieting regimes, recreational practices, and
high-profile sporting mega-events-holds a vital function in
contemporary society. As the body moves-as it performs, sweats,
runs, and jumps-it sets in motion an intricate web of scientific
rationalities, spatial arrangements, corporate imperatives, and
identity politics (i.e. politics of gender, race, social class,
etc.). It represents vitality in its productive and physiological
capacities, it drives a complex economy of experiences and
products, and it is a meaningful site of cultural identities and
politics. Contributors to Sport, Physical Culture, and the Moving
Body work from a simple premise: as it moves, the material body
matters. Adding to the burgeoning fields of sport studies and body
studies, the works featured here draw upon the traditions of
feminist theory, posthumanism, actor network theory, and new
materialism to reposition the physical, moving body as crucial to
the cultural, political, environmental, and economic systems that
it constitutes and within which is constituted. Once assembled, the
book presents a study of bodies in motion-made to move in contexts
where technique, performance, speed, strength, and vitality not
only define the conduct therein, but provide the very reason for
the body's being within those economies and environments. In so
doing, the contributors look to how the body moving for and about
rational systems of science, medicine, markets, and geopolity
shapes the social and material world in important and unexpected
ways. In Sport, Physical Culture, and the Moving Body, contributors
explore the extent to which the body, when moving about both
ostensibly active body spaces (i.e., the gymnasium, the ball field,
exercise laboratory, the track or running trail, the beach, or the
sport stadium) and those places less often connected to physical
activity (i.e. the home, the street, the classroom, the
automobile), is bounded to technologies of life and living; and to
the political arrangements that seek to capitalize upon such frames
of biological vitality. To do so, the authors problematize the rise
of active body science (i.e. kinesiology, sport and exercise
sciences, performance biotechnology) and the effects these
scientific interventions have on embodied, lived experience.
Contributors to Sport, Physical Culture, and the Moving Body will
be engaging a range of new and emerging theoretical perspectives,
including new materialist, political ecology, developmental systems
theory, and new material feminist approaches, to examine the actors
and assemblages of movement-based material, political, and economic
production. In so doing, contributors will vividly and powerfully
illustrate the extent to which a focus on the fleshed body and its
material conditions can bring forth new insights or ontological and
epistemological innovation to the sociology of sport and physical
activity. They will also explore the agency of the body as and
amongst things. Such a performative materialist approach explicates
how complex assemblages of sport and physical activity-bringing
into association everything from muscle fibers and dietary proteins
to stadium concrete or regional aquifers-are not only meaningful,
but ecological. By focusing on the confluence of agentive
materialities, disciplinary technologies, vibrant assemblages,
speculative realities, and vital performativities, Sport, Physical
Culture, and the Moving Body promises to offer a groundbreaking
departure from representationalist tendencies and orthodoxies
brought about by the cultural turn in sport and physical cultural
studies. It brings the moving body and its physics back into focus:
recentering moving flesh and bones as locus of social order,
environmental change, and the global political economy.
neuen Technologien (CRM-Systeme, Web 2.0, regionale Wissenssysteme)
