The two-volume reference work is an important part of the renowned Verfasserlexikon zur deutschen Literatur des Mittelalters [Author Lexicon of German Literature of the Middle Ages], and, using the established systematics of the main work, documents and presents bio-bibliographical articles from Latin literature and science in the German-speaking area between 1480 and 1520. The lexicon is a valuable reference work on German High Humanism - a work which will mark the way for future research in literary science and history and which presents the first scientific bundling and presentation of information and texts that were previously difficult to access. Through the Author Lexicon on German Humanism, an important phase of German literary history, which is still terra incognita to a great extent, has been made comprehensively accessible.

Eighteen essays, published between 1970 and 2007 but supplemented to reflect current research, explore the most important types and developments of German poetry (Lieddichtung) from Walther von der Vogelweide and the songbook of Clara Hatzlerlin, often beginning with how the songs were handed down. With an emphasis on Heinrich Frauenlob and Oswald von Wolkenstein, the essays provide an introduction into key areas of the history of the Lied."

Eine Auswahl aus dem 10-bandigen Verfasserlexikon, dem umfassenden Nachschlagewerk uber das volkssprachliche und lateinische Schrifttum des Mittelalters im deutschsprachigen Raum, liegt jetzt in der einbandigen Studienausgabe Deutschsprachige Literatur des Mittelalters vor. Dafur wurden die Bereiche bevorzugt, die in der Praxis des akademischen Unterrichts am ehesten vorkommen: neben den ganz beruhmten Werken und Autoren vor allem das 9. Jh., die Zeit von 1150 bis 1250, die Mystik des 13. und 14. Jahrhunderts sowie Kleinepik und Fastnachtspiel. Daruber hinaus sind einige niederdeutsche und ein altjiddischer Text enthalten. Wichtige Vorzuge des Gesamtwerks wie die lexikalische Anordnung monographischer Artikel und die Darstellung der UEberlieferung kommen auch in dieser Zusammenstellung zur Geltung. Mit der Studienausgabe erhalt ein breiter Leserkreis - insbesondere von Studierenden - erstmals die Moeglichkeit, sich nicht nur umfassend uber die so genannte schoene Literatur zu informieren, sondern auch einiges aus Bereichen wie Erbauungsliteratur oder Sachprosa kennen zu lernen.

The study examines the genesis of the legend of the SAngerkrieg in the Wartburg Castle in the 13th century, its literary reception in German Romanticism and its treatment in the pictures of Moritz von Schwind. Special interest is focused on the implied views in each case of the relationship between art, education, religiosity, and society.

The 16 articles in this volume examine interlinkings between religious and secular diction and thought-forms in the literature of the Middle Ages and the Reformation. Though wide-ranging in their methodologies they are united in the sometimes unexpected historical and systematic commonalities they detect in texts of different genres and periods. Together they take up a familiar but hitherto inadequately clarified problem and place it in the context of ongoing debate on the appropriate understanding of medieval literature and culture.
