The Quiet Trailblazer recounts Mary Frances Early’s life from her childhood in Atlanta, her growing interest in music, and her awakening to the injustices of racism in the Jim Crow South. Early carefully maps the road to her 1961 decision to apply to the master’s program in music education at the University of Georgia, becoming one of only three African American students. With this personal journey we are privy to her prolonged and difficult admission process; her experiences both troubling and hopeful while on the Athens campus; and her historic graduation in 1962. Early shares fascinating new details of her regular conversations with civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. She also recounts her forty-eight years as a music educator in the state of Georgia, the Southeast, and at the national level. She continued to blaze trails within the field and across professional associations. After Early earned her master’s and specialist’s degrees, she became an acclaimed Atlanta music educator, teaching music at segregated schools and later being promoted to music director of the entire school system. In 1981 Early became the first African American elected president of the Georgia Music Educators Association. After she retired from working in public schools in 1994, Early taught at Morehouse College and Spelman College and served as chair of the music department at Clark Atlanta University. Early details her welcome reconciliation with UGA, which had failed for decades to publicly recognize its first Black graduate. In 2018 she received the President’s Medal, and her portrait is one of only two women’s to hang in the Administration Building. Most recently, Early was honored by the renaming of the College of Education in her honor.

World War II in Mid-America - Experiences from rural mid-America during the Second World War (Hardcover): Robert C. Daniels World War II in Mid-America - Experiences from rural mid-America during the Second World War (Hardcover)
Robert C. Daniels
R737 Discovery Miles 7 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The true account of World War II as seen through eyes of thirty-four mid-Western Americans. Covering the war on a year by year basis, it is the story of how the war affected these individuals and their families, many times in their own words. Covered is not only the military who went off to war, but also the wives, the sweethearts, and the children of the military, as well as those who stayed behind to hold down the home front - the factory worker, the German POW guard, the farmer. It is the story of how they willingly struggled with rationing, how they willingly assisted each other when the need arose, how they willingly collected recyclables and other goods for the war effort, without any expectation of compensation. It is also the story of the military members, why and when they entered the service as well as how they served their country in the time of need - the B-17 ball turret gunner, the Higgins boat pilot, the Marine landing on Okinawa and Guam, the Japanese held POW, the WAC and the WAAC. In summary, it is the story of their war A war that "nobody, nobody shirked their duty."

R2,953 Discovery Miles 29 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Peacekeeping has become one of the most important tasks of the United Nations, with more than 55 missions created since 1948. Peacekeeping is one of the only multilateral tools that the member states have to address conflicts in all parts of the world. Over 44,000 troops from 90 countries are deployed today. Drawing on first-hand accounts of participants in past peacekeeping successes and failures, this study focuses on how better to ensure success through the use of leverage as a central tool. While the threat of military force can be used to compel compliance, other sources of leverage, such as the threat of sanctions or the withdrawal of loans, can also be effective. Economic incentives also provide vital leverage. Moral suasion and leadership skills are critical as well. The choice of key personnel, particularly in the role of the Special Representatives of the Secretary-General, as in the utilization of Jacques Kline in Eastern Slavonia, has also proved be key. These case studies carefully examine how a confluence of tools have been brought to bear in circumstances ranging from East Timor and Namibia.

Mayan Calendar Prophecies - Predictions for 2012-2052 (Hardcover): Gary C. Daniels Mayan Calendar Prophecies - Predictions for 2012-2052 (Hardcover)
Gary C. Daniels
R952 Discovery Miles 9 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Take a look at the science behind the Mayan calendar, prophecies and mythology. The Maya believed multiple cycles governed civilization. They created various calendars to track these cycles. Their short count calendar tracked a 256-year cycle believed to control epidemics, famines, warfare and more. Scientists have found a 250-year solar cycle that also appears to affect epidemics, famines, warfare and more. Their long count calendar tracked a 5000-year cycle related to natural disasters and cosmic catastrophes. Scientists have also discovered that the Earth is subjected to periodic bombardment by comets and asteroids that plunges the world into long periods of darkness and cold. Mayan mythology appears to record such events and in some instances even the exact dates on which these catastrophes occurred in the past. By comparing these dates with ice core records, sedimentary records, and climate records, this book reveals the truth about civilization's darkest days. And what may lie ahead in the future.

The Salvation of the Flesh in Tertullian of Carthage - Dressing for the Resurrection (Hardcover): C. Daniel-Hughes The Salvation of the Flesh in Tertullian of Carthage - Dressing for the Resurrection (Hardcover)
C. Daniel-Hughes
R1,393 Discovery Miles 13 930 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Why did the influential Christian thinker, Tertullian of Carthage (160-220 C.E.), while addressing the critical issue of salvation of the flesh, write about clothing? Why did he care what Christians wore? Carly Daniel-Hughes answers that in early Christian communities clothing tied to identity and theology. Placing Tertullian's writings in the Roman culture of dress, she shows that in them men's dress is used to envision Christian masculinity as non-Roman and anti-imperial. His concerns about women's dress, however, reveal internal Christian debates about the nature of the flesh and the possibility of its transformation in to a resurrected, glorious body.

The Fragmentation of New England - Comparative Perspectives on Economic, Political, and Social Divisions in the Eighteenth... The Fragmentation of New England - Comparative Perspectives on Economic, Political, and Social Divisions in the Eighteenth Century (Hardcover)
Bruce C. Daniels
R2,567 Discovery Miles 25 670 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A readable and wide-ranging contribution to the social history of New England, this volume treats subjects as diverse as economic growth, wealth distribution, poor relief, local government, office-holding, leadership, urban development, and historiography. Each essay takes a comparative approach to its subject, identifying general patterns within New England society as well as significant regional, typological, and idiosyncratic variations and changes that occurred over the course of the eighteenth century. Collectively, the work creates a picture of an increasingly heterogeneous society fragmenting into competing economic, political, and social groups.

Although largely quantitative in approach, the book is written to be accessible both to undergraduates just beginning their study of social history and experienced researchers who seek a deeper understanding of particular aspects of New England's history. As such, it will be an ideal supplemental text for courses on American history, colonial history, and social, community, or New England history.

From Sound to Synapse - Physiology of the Mammalian Ear (Hardcover, New): C. Daniel Geisler From Sound to Synapse - Physiology of the Mammalian Ear (Hardcover, New)
C. Daniel Geisler
R3,308 Discovery Miles 33 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book describes the major steps by which the mammalian ear transforms sound into nerve impulses. The author leads us along the pathway followed by an acoustic signal--collected by the outer ear, augmented by the middle ear, then delivered to the inner ear where the minuscule vibrations of the sound waves are transformed into nerve impulses. At each stage, the basic mechanisms are described qualitatively in terms of current theories and illustrated with experimental data. Where appropriate, related mechanisms in the ears of other vertebrates are considered. It is shown that the mammalian ear does an exquisite job of translating sound signals into a very robust nerve-pulse code. The book concludes with descriptions of some common ear impairments and a brief survey of the treatments available for them. The text is integrated with animations of mechanical and neural phenomena available through the Internet.

English Learners at the Top of the Class is a practice oriented book that also contributes to the professional literature. It is written for teacher candidates and both new and experienced practicing teachers who want to design and deliver effective instructional paradigms across this country's diverse classrooms. Chapter authors bring to this book their experiences as teachers at levels K-12. Many of them learned English as a second language and experienced life as an EL in U.S. classrooms. They were all teachers who along the way began to work with ELs. Their engagement with culturally diverse students led them to become teacher educators. They are committed to preparing teachers who are energized to learn about their ELs' cultures and who want to make the schoolhouse a culturally responsive environment.

During the past two decades, several changes have transformed core practices of teacher educators. One of the most salient changes pertains to dramatic shifts in school demographics. In practically every state in the United States, primary, elementary, middle, and high schools are experiencing expanding enrollments of students whose primary language is not English. Recent demographic data show that linguistically and culturally diverse students constitute an increasingly strong presence in our schools and communities. There are approximately 5 million ELs in the U.S., and this number is on the rise. It is estimated that two-thirds of these students are in at least one course taught by general education teachers. Growth in K-12 EL enrollment has skyrocketed in the past 20 years. One in 20 public K-12 students was an EL in 1990. In 2008, it was one in nine. Projections suggest that in 20 years it will be one in four. The content of the book integrates new and emerging research and policy insights that inform effective teaching of ELs across the disciplines. The chapters in this book will in ways to give teachers the tools they need to improve the quality of instruction in classrooms with ELs in grades K-12 both in the United States and around the world. In this book a select group of contributors address a variety of topics to enhance ELs language and literacy skills, as well increase their reading comprehension abilities across the curriculum. Chapter topics include reading and writing instruction focusing on the Common Core standards, classroom-based assessment, literacy-based mathematics instruction, literacy instruction using current technologies that include digital literacies and social media, as well as context-embedded vocabulary development using art.

Altruism in Humans (Hardcover): C. Daniel Batson Altruism in Humans (Hardcover)
C. Daniel Batson
R1,849 Discovery Miles 18 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One of the "Best Books of 2011" from the Center for Optimal Adult Development
We send money to help famine victims halfway around the world. We campaign to save whales and oceans. We stay up all night to comfort a friend with a broken relationship. People will at times risk -- even lose -- their lives for others, including strangers. Why do we do these things? What motivates such behavior?
Altruism in Humans takes a hard-science look at the possibility that we humans have the capacity to care for others for their sakes rather than simply for our own. Based on an extensive series of theory-testing laboratory experiments conducted over the past 35 years, this book details a theory of altruistic motivation, offers a comprehensive summary of the research designed to test the empathy-altruism hypothesis, and considers the theoretical and practical implications of this conclusion.
Authored by the world's preeminent scholar on altruism, this landmark work is an authoritative scholarly resource on the theory surrounding altruism and its potential contribution to better interpersonal relations and a better society.

The Altruism Question - Toward A Social-psychological Answer (Paperback): C. Daniel Batson The Altruism Question - Toward A Social-psychological Answer (Paperback)
C. Daniel Batson
R1,497 Discovery Miles 14 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Are our efforts to help others ever driven solely by altruistic motivation, or is our ultimate goal always some form of self- benefit (egoistic motivation)? This volume reports the development of an empirically-testable theory of altruistic motivation and a series of experiments designed to test that theory. It sets the issue of egoism versus altruism in its larger historical and philosophical context, and brings diverse experiments into a single, integrated argument. Readers will find that this book provides a solid base of information from which questions surrounding the existence of altruistic motivation can be further investigated.

We Fish is a father and son's shared dialogue in poetry and prose, memoir and reflection, as they delight in their time spent fishing while considering the universal challenge of raising good children. Jack was a tough father, raising Omari to work beyond his own expectations and the standards educators and society placed on young black males. Like most adolescents, Omari felt his father was too demanding, with little regard for his own feelings. That relationship changed when they were on the Juniata River, casting for bass and wading the swift currents. We Fish is a story of the Daniels men - father and son, uncles, cousins, and other male role models - and how their precious time together impacted the young and old alike. Their story has the power to teach today's young African American men about friendship, family, and trust - and the potential to save a generation from the dangers of the modern world and from themselves.
