Air Pollution Control Engineering - Handbook Of Environmental Engineering - Volume 1 (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Lawrence... Air Pollution Control Engineering - Handbook Of Environmental Engineering - Volume 1 (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Lawrence K. Wang, Norman C. Pereira, Yung-Tse Hung
R7,788 Discovery Miles 77 880 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A panel of respected air pollution control educators and practicing professionals critically survey the both principles and practices underlying control processes, and illustrate these with a host of detailed design examples for practicing engineers. The authors discuss the performance, potential, and limitations of the major control processes-including fabric filtration, cyclones, electrostatic precipitation, wet and dry scrubbing, and condensation-as a basis for intelligent planning of abatement systems, . Additional chapters critically examine flare processes, thermal oxidation, catalytic oxidation, gas-phase activated carbon adsorption, and gas-phase biofiltration. The contributors detail the Best Available Technologies (BAT) for air pollution control and provide cost data, examples, theoretical explanations, and engineering methods for the design, installation, and operation of air pollution process equipment. Methods of practical design calculation are illustrated by numerous numerical calculations.

Advanced Air And Noise Pollution Control - Handbook Of Environmental Engineering - Volume 2 (Hardcover, 2005): Lawrence K.... Advanced Air And Noise Pollution Control - Handbook Of Environmental Engineering - Volume 2 (Hardcover, 2005)
Lawrence K. Wang, Norman C. Pereira, Yung-Tse Hung
R5,985 Discovery Miles 59 850 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Leading pollution control educators and practicing professionals describe how various combinations of different cutting-edge process systems can be arranged to solve air, noise, and thermal pollution problems. Each chapter discusses in detail a variety of process combinations, along with technical and economic evaluations, and presents explanations of the principles behind the designs, as well as numerous variant designs useful to practicing engineers. The emphasis throughout is on developing the necessary engineering solutions from fundamental principles of chemistry, physics, and mathematics.
The authors also include extensive references, cost data, design methods, guidance on the installation and operation of various air pollution control process equipment and systems, and Best Available Technologies (BAT) for air thermal and noise pollution control.

Water Resources and Control Processes - Volume 4 (Hardcover, 1986 ed.): Lawrence K. Wang, Norman C. Pereira Water Resources and Control Processes - Volume 4 (Hardcover, 1986 ed.)
Lawrence K. Wang, Norman C. Pereira
R2,931 Discovery Miles 29 310 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The past few years have seen the emergence of a growing, widespread desire in this country, and indeed everywhere, that positive actions be taken to restore the quality of our environment, and to protect it from the degrading effects of all forms of pollution-air, noise, solid waste, and water. Since pollution is a direct or indirect consequence of waste, if there is no waste, there can be no pollution, and the seemingly idealistic demand for "zero discharge" can be construed as a demand for zero waste. However, as long as there is waste, we can only attempt to abate the consequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. In those instances in which a particular type of pollution has been recognized, three major questions usually arise: (1) How serious is the pollution? (2) Is the technology to abate it available? and (3) Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? The principal intention of this series of books on environmental engineering is to help the reader formu late useful answers to the second and third of these questions, i. e., to outline the best currently available engineering solutions, and to examine their costs in the light of the real level of benefits afforded."

Making Brazil Work - Checking the President in a Multiparty System (Hardcover): M. Melo, C Pereira Making Brazil Work - Checking the President in a Multiparty System (Hardcover)
M. Melo, C Pereira
R3,919 Discovery Miles 39 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Common wisdom has it that when presidential political systems coincide with multiparty systems the result is gridlock; parties squabble and presidents are not able to stitch together the majorities they need to move forward with the business of governing. Yet, recent experiences in Latin America suggest otherwise. In roughly the last decade, multiparty presidentialism has emerged as a model form of presidential democracy. Using Brazil as a case study and situating Brazil within a broad comparative context, this book offers the first conceptually rigorous analysis of the political and institutional underpinnings of Brazil's recent rise as the world's six largest economy. Considering key institutional features at federal and sub-national levels, the authors argue that Brazils success stems from the combination of a constitutionally strong president and a robust system of checks and balances that emerges from healthy political competition and power alternation.

However, as long as there is waste, we can only attempt to abate the consequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. In those instances in which a particular type of pollution has been recognized, three major questions usually arise: 1, How serious is the pollution? 2, Is the technology to abate it available? and 3, Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? The principal intention of this series of books is to help the reader to formulate answers to the last two of the above three questions. The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to specific pollution problems has been a major factor contributing to the success of environmental engineering, and in large measure has accounted for the establishing ofa "methodology of pollution control.

Gene, Drug, and Tissue Engineering (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023): Glaucia C. Pereira Gene, Drug, and Tissue Engineering (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023)
Glaucia C. Pereira
R5,899 Discovery Miles 58 990 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book combines discursive chapters that present the latest progress in molecular biology, drug discovery, organ-tissue engineering, and related fields, with a number of descriptive chapters on methods, protocols, and case studies. Structured into four parts, this volume walks the reader through the latest in cellular biology, with discussions on novel medicinal plant metabolites, nanotechnology in precision medicine, nucleic acid-based therapeutics and vaccines, genetic engineering, computational aid, bioinformatics, synthetic organs for transplantation, and organ-tissue engineering. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include the kind of detail and expert implementation advice that ensures quality results in the lab. Authoritative and informative, Gene, Drug, and Tissue Engineering serves as an ideal guide for undergraduate students, postgraduate researchers, and senior researchers working in biomedicine and its underlying technologies, stimulating both computational and experimental development and fostering the exchange of new ideas.

Over the past decade, there has been an increasing emphasis in African scholarship and research on the importance of understanding sexuality and the issues around it, such as identity, sexual rights and sexuality, reproductive health and rights and gender and political democracy. Despite this, Africa has frequently been found by researchers to be predominantly hostile to any discussion of sexual and reproductive rights, conveying dismay at the notion of women's rights to reproductive freedom, disgusted objection to the idea that gay and lesbian people have civic and human rights and opposed to engagement with issues such as FGM (Kenya), virginity testing (South Africa), Shar'ia interpretations of appropriate sexuality (Nigeria and Sudan), and legal relationships to homosexuality and intersexuality (South Africa).

In 2004, the African Gender Institute ran a continental research project, Mapping Sexualities, among the objectives of which was the development of a research methodology suited to carrying out in-depth case studies of the dynamics of gender and contemporary sexual cultures in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda. This book is the result of that research. The chapters cover broad-ranging issues and include questions about what it means to research topics that are unpopular or fraught with the sense of the taboo that underpins much work in sexualities and gender studies.

Overall, the diverse pieces within the collection offer the opportunity to see qualitative research not as the 'poor cousin' of quantitative studies but as a zone which raises intellectual and political challenges.
