Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Appropriate for courses in Classroom Management and Classroom Discipline. Charles is the leading classroom management models text. It covers and applies the most important management and discipline approaches, from Redl, Wattenberg, Skinner, and Glasser through Jones, Kagan, Cook, and others. This book has two main goals. The first is to help readers understand and become highly competent in today's major concepts, terminology, approaches, and strategies in discipline. Toward that end, information is presented on the nature of behavior and misbehavior, students' behavioral traits, teachers' obligations in discipline, and the goals and procedures of today's most respected approaches in management. The second goal is to assist teachers in organizing systems of management that best meet their needs and those of their students. A comprehensive review of outstanding strategies and tactics is presented with further information and guidance to help teachers develop effective, well-rounded systems of management and discipline for any class. On the New Edition of Building Classroom Discipline "I feel the book is the best overview of Classroom Management for an entry-level teacher. It has a strong theoretical basis and provides students with a sound overview of classroom management. . . . [E]ach chapter is easy to follow and . . . [t]he case examples and the application examples strengthen each chapter. . . . A true gem of a book!" --Aubrey Fine, CA Poly University [Two things] I like about the new edition that the [previous edition did] not have [are] the chapter on self-assessment, as well as [the] inclusion of the Be the Teacher Scenarios in all the chapters. My students have enjoyed the Be the Teacher practice exercises a lot, and I am glad that with the new edition they will have even more opportunities to practice." --Madalina Tanase, University of North Florida "Not only does Charles provide the essence of each model, but he focuses on how to execute the model in a classroom. The step-by-step approach is exceptional." --Deborah Burris, Southern Illinios University - Carbondale
Mindful of current legislation, this teacher-friendly, standards-driven edition of "Elementary Classroom Management" examines issues and models of management concerns in 21st century elementary classrooms. Well-conceived classroom management helps establish positive environments and programs where communication, cooperation, and dedication to learning prevail. This text is designed to assist teachers, both novice and experienced, in developing and refining management skills that lead to learning and enjoyment in the classroom. While based upon proven research methods, the aim of the text is to provide clear, practical advice.
Who exactly are the intellectuals ? This term is so widely used today that we forget that it is a recent invention, dating from the late nineteenth century. In Birth of the Intellectuals, the renowned historian and sociologist Christophe Charle shows that the term intellectuals first appeared at the time of the Dreyfus Affair, and the neologism originally signified a cultural and political vanguard who dared to challenge the status quo. Yet the word, expected to disappear once the political crisis had dissolved, has somehow endured. At times it describes a social group, and at others a way of seeing the social world from the perspective of universal values that challenges established hierarchies. But why did intellectuals survive when the events that gave rise to this term had faded into the past? To answer this question, it is necessary to show how the crisis of the old representations, the unprecedented expansion of the intellectual professions and the vacuum left by the decline of the traditional ruling class created favourable conditions for the collective affirmation of intellectuals . This also explains why the literary or academic avant garde traditionally reluctant to engage gradually reconciled themselves with political activists and developed new ways to intervene in the field of power outside of traditional political channels. Through a careful rereading of the petitions surrounding the Dreyfus Affair, Charle offers a radical reinterpretation of this crucial moment of European history and develops a new model for understanding the ways in which public intellectuals in France, Germany, Britain, and the United States have addressed politics ever since.
