After Dorothy L. Sayers became famous for her fictional sleuth,
Lord Peter Wimsey, she began investigating the mysteries of
Anglo-Catholic Christianity, writing plays for both stage and
radio. However, because her modernist contemporaries disdained both
best-sellers and religious fiction, Sayers has been largely
overlooked by the academy. Writing Performances is the first work
to position Sayers' diverse writings within the critical climate of
high modernism. Employing exuberant illustrations from Sayers'
detective fiction to make theoretical issues accessible, the book
employs insights from performance theory to argue that Sayers,
though a popularizer, presciently anticipated the postmodern
ironizing of Enlightenment rationality and scientific objectivity.
It is 1940, and American Tom McCord, a 23-year-old graduate
student, is in England researching the historical evidence for the
legendary King Arthur. There he meets perky and intuitive Laura
Hartman, a fellow American staying with her aunt in Oxford, and the
two of them team up for an even more ambitious and dangerous quest.
Aided by the Inklings - that illustrious circle of scholars and
writers made famous by its two most prolific members, C.S. Lewis
and J.R.R. Tolkien - Tom and Laura begin to suspect that the fabled
Spear of Destiny, the lance that pierced the side of Christ on the
Cross, is hidden somewhere in England.

Praise for Into the Wardrobe
"[Into the Wardrobe] will be best enjoyed by fans who have read
the entire series, but those who haven't may be so impressed by
Downing's exploration of Lewis's deep and sophisticated imagination
that they will sneak 'into the wardrobe' and devour the Chronicles
for themselves."
--Publishers Weekly
"Everyone who has enjoyed the Chronicles of Narnia and anyone
who is interested in the writings of C.S. Lewis must read this
excellent work?Downing helps the reader understand how the
Chronicles reflect not only Lewis's towering intellect, but also
his strong faith and his sensitive heart."
--Armand Nicholi, M.D., author, The Question of God: C. S. Lewis
and Sigmund Freud Debate God, Love, Sex, and the Meaning of
Life
"Like his previous studies of Lewis's life and writings, Into
the Wardrobe proves again that Downing is a master at weaving
essential facts and fresh insights into a smooth narrative?a
balanced and satisfying guide for either experienced or first-time
readers of Narnia."
--Robert Trexler, editor, CSL: The Bulletin of the New York C. S.
Lewis Society
"With lucidity and uncommon good sense, David Downing offers a
guide to the Narnia Chronicles that will deepen the reader's
appreciation of these perennial favorites while illuminating the
origins of Narnia in Lewis's life and work."
--John Wilson, editor, Books & Culture
"What David C. Downing does so well is give us lenses through
which Lewis's myriad works come into sharp focus, revealing the
convictions, insights, scholarship, experience, and questions that
shaped the man who brought us Narnia."
--Jeffrey Overstreet, film critic, Christianity Today
andLookingCloser.org
"David Downing's sprightly study of the Narnia Chronicles
provides readers with a fresh interpretation of Lewis's children's
books?Read and rejoice."
--Ralph C. Wood, University Professor of Theology and Literature,
Baylor University, Waco, Texas, and author, The Gospel According to
Tolkien: Visions of the Kingdom in Middle-Earth
A South Divided is an account of Southern dissidents in the
Civil War, at times labeled as traitors, Tories, deserters, or
mossbacks during the war and loyalists, Lincoln loyalists, and
Unionists by historians of the war. In recent years there has been
an upsurge of interest in Southern dissenters among specific groups
or communities. But A South Divided presents a
panoramic overview of Southern dissent. What emerges is a complex
pattern of dissent involving every state of the Confederacy and
every year of the war. All of these people and groups had their
part to play in the epic drama that sapped the strength of the
Confederacy from within. They were rebels against the rebellion.

The Grand Canyon: One of our Nation's greatest treasures. Majestic.
Immense. Dynamic. Dangerous. Epic. To capture the essence of the
Grand Canyon, you must experience it first-hand. The following
mapbook is composed of high detail, hill shaded USGS topographic
maps overlaid by GPS captured hiking trails and waypoints. USGS
topo maps have been used for over a century in the adventurer's
pursuit of the outdoors. These topo maps are digitally scanned at
high resolution, then cropped to 1:12,000 scale providing more
detail for simple, more accurate navigation (original USGS topo
maps are scaled at 1:24,000). Not only are these maps an excellent
accessory for a GPS unit, but also work well with a magnetic
compass (still essential to any hiker's tool set). In order to
provide the most up-to-date maps available, MooseTrak Maps monitors
trail hazards and conditions. Updates are provided to this
publication regularly. Whether hiking rim to rim or enjoying a few
day hikes, we know this mapbook will add to your enjoyment of the

FOUR YEARS A SCOUT AND SPY. CHAPTER I. Parentage?Early discipline ?
Childhood incidents?Subsequent occupations?Driven from
Mississippi?Works on rebel fortifications?Escape to
Illinois?Enlists as a soldier?Supposed to have deserted?How he got
his name?Examination by the Surgeon?Koster of the Regiment. I Was
born in the town of Copley, in what is now known as Summit County,
Ohio, on the 17th day of June, 1823, and at the time that I entered
the army I was thirty-nine years of age. My father's name was
Alfred Ruggles. At the time of his death he was living with his
second wife. His family numbered twelve sons and seven daughters. I
am the youngest of seven children by my father's second wife. My
father was a blacksmith by trade, and all of his sons, except
myself, were learned the trade, under his personal instruction.
Lorenzo Ruggles, my father's second son by his first wife, after
having finished his trade, was sent to college and educated. He is
the General Ruggles of the Confederate army. When I was ten years
of age my father died, leaving a large farm disposed of by a will.
The children went to law, and spent the entire property in breaking
the will and settling the estate. In consequence of that I was
thrown upon my own labor for my support at a very early age. My
father was an old-fashioned strict disciplinarian; in the
government of his family "he ruled with an iron hand." His
government was not only rigid but chilling. The deviation of a hair
from the paternal command was usually followed by a whipping, and
sometimes one was administered without proper investigation. People
often ask me, " What is the essential qualification of a good spy ?
" My answer is, " It requires an accomplished liar" I mean by that,
a man that can successfully practice deception...
