Celebrated theologian, preacher and author C. I. Scofield explains descriptions of Christian qualities in the New Testament, and the Gospels of Christ in this excellent Bible study and devotional book. In this superbly detailed examination of the New Testament, Scofield demonstrates how dispensationalism can aid Christians in receiving the true meaning of the scriptures. Making careful distinctions between the gospels and the nature of Christian belief, Scofield demonstrates how God divided the various gospels over time, and explains how to distinguish between these divisions. Throughout this work we observe how the author supports his words with frequent quotations of the scripture. We learn how the believer must act when adhering to Christ's teachings, and of how the Christian may please God and receive his blessings. Holding to beliefs in God in spite of life's trials, adhering to the principles of moral virtue, and understanding the fundamental truths of the Bible are emphasized.
Until the day of Pentecost, the disciples, who had received, by the outbreathing of Christ, the indwelling Spirit, waited for His coming "upon" them; and when that day was fully come, with the outward manifestations of sound and flame, He came. They were baptized with the Holy Ghost; and not only baptized, but "filled with the Holy Ghost."-from Plain Papers on the Doctrine of the Holy SpiritIn the late 19th century, a new fascination with Pentecostalism gripped American Christianity, one that continues to this day to influence fundamentalist interpretations of the Bible. This 1899 book, a literal reading of Scripture, offers Christians the path to a direct relationship with the Holy Spirit. From the nature of this being to the absolute necessity of all Christians to commune with it, this is a vital historical work that all students of the Bible will want to read.OF INTEREST TO: Bible-study groups, seekers after wisdomAUTHOR BIO: American clergyman CYRUS INGERSOLL SCOFIELD (1843-1921), a Civil War veteran who fought for the Confederacy, was a lawyer until his evangelical conversion in 1879, after which his life was consumed with preaching and missionary work. Excerpt from book: Ill THE GREAT TRIBULATION PRECEDING THE DAY OF JEHOVAH After we have seen how fully the prophetic Word harmonizes in the revelation of the great day of Jehovah, we are prepared to follow throughout the Scriptures the events which cluster around that day, as well as the blessings which are promised to follow. As we continue in this we shall see more and more the perfect harmony of prophecy. We point out first of all the fact that the entire prophetic Word gives us a minute description of the characteristics of the times which precede the manifestation of Jehovah in His day. In this description nearly all the different instruments through whom the Spirit of God spoke fully agree; nor does this description end with the Old Testament. It is continued in the New. '. We touch now a most important theme of God's revelation. We are aware of the fact that what we shall learn from the Scriptures is in direct opposition to the beliefs and theories prevalent throughout Christendom. Alas that so many who call themselves Christian believers should continue in these wrong conceptions and theories, and remain grosslyignorant of God's eternal purposes revealed in His Word. Men have taught and teach without any Scriptural warrant whatever, that a universal judgment day is to come, and that this day will come after the conversion of the world and the extension of the kingdom (as they term it) over the whole world. According to this almost universal belief, things are progressing favourably, improvements set in on all sides, evil is being rapidly checked, and the common lot of humanity improved; nations are purer than ever before, world-wide peace almost at hand, as well as the conversion of the great heathen nations. All this is an unscriptural dream, something which is completely agai...
