The Voyage of the Santa Evangelista is an adventurous, thrilling
allegory about the Biblical teachings of vocation and
evangelism-how they are a part of, and complement, each Christian.
The ship represents the Church, and those on board represent the
various vocations within the body of Christ and how their callings
were made to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. In The Voyage
of the Santa Evangelista, Rev. Mack has creatively and effectively
intertwined the thoughts and lives of fictional characters with the
doctrine of vocation and evangelism. Set in the time following the
discovery of the New World and the Reformation, the reader sets
sail with the captain, crew, and passengers of the Santa
Evangelista on a voyage of self-examination. Through the characters
he has imagined, Rev. Mack teaches a Biblical understanding of
Christian purpose in every action of life that is inextricably
linked to the mission of God and His final goal for His elect
children to enter into heaven.
Statistics is of ever-increasing importance in Science and
Technology and this book presents the essentials of the subject in
a form suitable either as the basis of a course of lectures or to
be read and/or used on its own. It assumes very little in the way
of mathematical knowledge-just the ability to substitute
numerically in a few simple formulae. However, some mathematical
proofs are outlined or given in full to illustrate the derivation
of the subject; these can be omitted without loss of understanding.
The book does aim at making clear the scope and nature of those
essential tests and methods that a scientist or technologist is
likely to need; to this end each chapter has been divided into
sections with their own subheadings and some effort has been made
to make the text unambiguous (if any reader finds a misleading
point anywhere I hope he will write to me about it). Also with this
aim in view, the equality of probability to proportion of
population is stated early, then the normal distribution and the
taking of samples is discussed. This occupies the first five
chapters. With the principles of these chapters understood, the
student can immediately learn the significance tests of Chapter 6
and, if he needs it, the analysis of variance of Chapter 7. For
some scientists this will be most of what they need. Howcver, they
will be in a position to read and/or use the remaining chapters
without undue difficulty.
In 2009, Sports Illustrated reported that 78% of NFL players file
for bankruptcy or face financial hardship only two years after
playing their last game. Stories of Mike Tyson, Curt Schilling,
Allen Iverson, and other athletes who have squandered millions of
dollars constantly hit the news headlines. This book is written for
those athletes who want to plan for a future that does not include
financial hardships, regardless of the length of their career.
"Playing Smart" is written for authors who dare to be different.
Ryan Mack, nationally renowned financial expert and author, has
worked with many athletes throughout his career. Many talented
athletes are young men and women when they enter their professional
sports career. These athletes want to be informed, but don't know
which questions to ask. This book is a clear, easy to understand
guide to a variety of topics which help professional athletes
minimize the risk of losing their fortune. In fact, this book will
help athletes learn how to make their money and savings grow.
Inside you will find strategies for navigating: Family and Money:
Strategies for navigating money with family in a way that is
balanced and protects the athlete's interests. Advisors: Weeding
out unethical advisors and building an effective/comprehensive
team. Retirement: Wealth building strategies to create a long term
financial plan for life after sports. Giving Back: Responsible
strategies for giving back to the community and empowering others.
Ryan Mack has used his expertise to create a handbook, the first of
its kind, to empower athletes financially. If an athlete wants to
spend his or her money wisely to maximize the possibility of
long-term financial success, they must read "Playing Smart" and
keep it for future reference. Ryan Mack wrote this book knowing
that he would not be in the room or in the orientation to assist
every athlete, but having this book and the answers to its
questions is the next best thing

"Parlor Ladies and Ebony Drudges does not simply fill in another
piece of the mosaic that women's historians have been assembling.
Raising new questions, it offers a fresh perspective on the history
of African American women and invites us to follow new paths of
inquiry."--from the Foreword by Elizabeth Fox-Genovese
Focusing on the community of Orangeburg, South Carolina, from 1880
to 1940, Parlor Ladies and Ebony Drudges explores the often sharp
class divisions that developed among African African women in that
small, semirural area.
Kibibi Voloria Mack's research challenges the conventional thesis
that all African American women toiled--and toiled hard--throughout
their lives. She shows that this was only true if they belonged to
certain socioeconomic classes. Mack finds that, in Orangeburg, a
significant minority did not have to work outside the home (unless
they chose to do so) and that some even had staffs of domestics to
do their housework--a situation paralleling that of the town's
genteel white women. While the factors of gender and race did
restrict the lives of all African American women in Jim Crow
Orangeburg, Mack argues, there was no real solidarity across class
lines. In fact, as she points out, tensions often arose between
women of the upper classes and those of the middle and working
classes.
Mack offers a rich picture of the work patterns, social lives, home
lives, attitudes, and self-images of the women of each class,
carefully distinguishing their differences and noting the
historical changes and continuities that affected them. The book is
not only an important contribution to the study of African American
women in the South but also to the research on women's work more
generally: it is a vital corrective to the past emphasis on white
women living in northeastern urban areas.
The Author: Kibibi Voloria C. Mack is an assistant professor in the
Africana Studies Department at the University of Maryland,
Baltimore County. She is a native of Orangeburg, South Carolina,
and received her doctorate in history at the State University of
New York, Binghamton. The mother of four daughters, she has also
written several books for young people on African and African
American history.
