In her multi-million-copy bestseller Mindset Carol Dweck coined the
terms ‘fixed’ and ‘growth’ mindset, transforming our view of individual
success. In a fixed mindset, talent and intelligence are viewed as
predetermined traits, while in a growth mindset, talent and
intelligence can be nurtured,
In Cultures of Growth, award-winning social psychologist Mary C. Murphy
argues that mindset transcends individuals. Drawing on compelling
examples from her work with Fortune 500 companies, startups and
schools, she shows how we can all create a growth mindset culture.
Murphy’s original decade-long research reveals that organisations and
teams more geared toward growth inspire deeper learning, spark
collaboration, spur innovation, and build trust necessary for
risk-taking and inclusion. They are also less likely to cheat, cut
corners, or steal each other’s ideas. And they’re more likely to
achieve top results. In these cultures, great ideas come from people
from all backgrounds and at all levels - not just those anointed as
brilliant or talented.
In a world where success seems reserved for a chosen few, Cultures of
Growth unveils a radically different approach to creating organisations
that inspire learning, growth, and success at all levels.
From the protégé of Carol Dweck, the bestselling author of
Mindset, award-winning social psychologist Mary Murphy offers a
definitive reconsideration of teamwork--showing how to better
achieve a growth mindset together as part of any organization's
culture. Carol Dweck's multi-million-copy bestseller Mindset has
transformed our view of individual success, coining the terms
"fixed" and "growth" mindset: in a "fixed" mindset, talent and
intelligence are viewed as predetermined traits, while in a
"growth" mindset, talent and intelligence can be nurtured through
dedication, the right strategies, and resilience. But we've only
understood mindset as solely about individuals. Now Dweck's
protégé, Mary Murphy, social psychologist at both Stanford and
Indiana University, presents a groundbreaking take on mindset,
showing how to transform any group, team, or classroom to reach
breakthroughs while also helping each person achieve their
potential. In Cultures of Growth, based on more than a decade of
original research, Murphy illustrates how the culture around us can
influence and improve our mindset, motivation, and performance.
Murphy's research reveals that organizations and teams that are
geared toward growth are more likely to inspire learning, spark
collaboration, spur innovation, and build trust necessary for
risk-taking and inclusion. They are also less likely to cheat, cut
corners, or steal each other's ideas. And they're more likely to
achieve top results. In these cultures, great ideas come from
people at all levels--not just those anointed as brilliant or
talented. Discover how a culture of growth helped make outdoor
retailer Patagonia a leader in its field; how Satya Nadella
transformed Microsoft with a singular focus on growth mindset; how
winemakers Robin McBride and Andréa McBride John are leading with
their mindset to disrupt and diversify an entire industry; and how
a New York school superintendent reversed massive inequities for
children of color by reshaping the district's mindset culture.
Drawing on compelling examples from her work with Fortune 500
companies, startups, and schools, Murphy demonstrates that the
organization's mindset culture is the key to success for both
individuals and the entire organization, teaching you how to create
a culture of growth through exercises--no matter your role.
Cultures of growth are environments that people want to be in
because they're places where people can thrive and achieve their
potential, both individually and together. In a world where success
seems reserved for a chosen few, Cultures of Growth unveils a
radically different approach to creating organizations that inspire
learning, growth, and success at all levels.

This pioneering book is the first comprehensive study of the Red
Sea as a sub-region of the international system in its own right.
Examining the international politics of the Red Sea region from the
Cold War to the present day, it argues that the Red Sea area
demonstrates the characteristics of a sub-regional system, given
its increasing economic and social interdependence, greater
regional integration, and flows of resources across it. It details
how stronger regional powers - Egypt, Israel and Saudi Arabia -
which co-habit the sub-region with much weaker, vulnerable and
fragile states, are seeking to stamp their own authority on this
dynamic sub-region. They have attempted to do so, the authors show,
through extension of their military and economic influence where
ever possible, while also forging regional partnerships aimed at
protecting their interests or to fend off possible encroachment of
others. The book discusses in great detail the security and
military dynamics of the sub-region; land and maritime borders; as
well as economic issues, including trade, migration, capital flows
and transport. It covers developments across the Red Sea and also
within all the states of this newly-forming sub-region.
American merchants established trading firms in the ports of
Yokohama, Kobe and Nagasaki which operated from 1859-1899 until the
repeal of the Unequal Treaties. Members of a privileged,
semi-colonial community, the merchants formed the largest group of
Americans in 19th century Japan. In this first book-length
treatment of this group, Kevin Murphy explores their interactions
with the Japanese in the treaty port system, how the Japanese
leadership manipulated them to its own ends, and how the merchants
themselves defined the limitations of American business in Japan
through their ambiguous but deep concern with order and
opportunity, restraint and dominance, and conservatism and
dominance.

Often regarded as the only true manifestation of political pluralism in the contemporary Middle East, the state of Israel has dominated the history and politics of the region for over fifty years. Yet despite its position as a regional superpower, Israel continues to struggle with the whole issue of its own identity, the complexities of which have exposed deep clefts throughout Israeli society that threaten to undermine the collective ideal of a viable Jewish polity in the Middle East. This book explores the complex challenges facing Israel, and the extent to which its present state structures and institutions can adapt and accommodate themselves to the diversity of security threats that it now faces. This book will be of interest to those who wish to understand the dynamics that have shaped and continue to shape the state of Israel, and the extent to which these have influenced its search for security in the modern Middle East.

As China and the U.S. increasingly compete for power in key areas
of U.S. influence, great power conflict looms. Yet few studies have
looked to the Middle East and Africa, regions of major political,
economic, and military importance for both China and the U.S., to
theorize how China competes in a changing world system. China's
Rise in the Global South examines China's behavior as a rising
power in two key Global South regions, the Middle East and
sub-Saharan Africa. Dawn C. Murphy, drawing on extensive fieldwork
and hundreds of interviews, compares and analyzes thirty years of
China's interactions with these regions across a range of
functional areas: political, economic, foreign aid, and military.
From the Belt and Road initiative to the founding of new
cooperation forums and special envoys, China's Rise in the Global
South offers an in-depth look at China's foreign policy approach to
the countries it considers its partners in South-South cooperation.
Intervening in the emerging debate between liberals and realists
about China's future as a great power, Murphy contends that China
is constructing an alternate international order to interact with
these regions, and this book provides policymakers and scholars of
international relations with the tools to analyze it.
This edited book examines English-Medium Instruction (EMI) language
policy and practice in higher education around the world,
highlighting how English language usage affects the
internationalization of universities, the way that disciplines are
taught and learned, and questioning whether internationalization
through EMI achieves the values of global citizenship and
inclusivity/diversity to which it aspires. Written by experts in
the field, the book includes data-based research from universities
around the globe, with three chapters on Asia and the Far East
(Malaysia, Japan and China), four on Europe (Denmark, the
Netherlands and Italy) and one each on Africa (Ethiopia) and
Central America (Mexico). Sources include policy documents,
questionnaire surveys, focus groups and semi-structured interviews
involving university policymakers, lecturers, students, and
administrative staff. This book will be of interest to students and
scholars of language and education policy, internationalization and
applied linguistics, particularly English-Medium Instruction (EMI),
academic English and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF).

The most fascinating aspects of coral reefs relate to how corals
and reef residents meet the challenges of survival and live
together. The focus of this book is on how a coral reef functions
-- the jobs of individual residents and how they collectively
create a sustainable community. The author explores how solar
energy powers the reef, how raw materials are used efficiently and
waste is recycled, why biodiversity is security, and how everything
is connected. There are also many insights into the more personal
lives of reef residents -- some are as strange as any science
fiction. By viewing coral reefs in the context of a human city, one
can more easily appreciate the creative ways reef communities
operate; they neither undermine their own survival nor that of
other communities elsewhere. In other words, a variety of species
collectively enhances the survival of the entire community. Dr
Murphy sees reef communities existing in a dynamic equilibrium
where forces of competition, destruction, and decay are balanced by
co-operation, repair, and rejuvenation. There are lessons for those
of us who are concerned about making our own communities more
sustainable. The subject matter is serious, but it is not taken so
seriously that it isn't fun. The most fascinating aspects of coral
reefs relate to how corals and reef residents meet the challenges

Photothermal science continues to be an area of rapid development
and active investigation, as is demonstrated by this volume. The
various contributions present fundamental research in materials
science, physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine, as well as
important applications of photothermal techniques in nondestructive
evaluation, aeronomy and pollution control, and other areas. The
topics treated include measurements of spectral properties of
gases, the theory of thermally generated elastic waves, a method of
monitoring local surface displacements, materials characterization
and nondestructive evaluation of materials, studies of the dynamics
of primary photophysical processes, fast energy exchange at
surfaces and at interfaces (e.g. in medicine and photobiology),
thermal EXAFS and XANES applied to metals and semiconductors, and
imaging of magnetic materials using microwave sources.

of information on fatty acyl-type lipids.
The UK's decision to leave the EU has opened up huge existential
questions for Northern Ireland as it marks its centenary.
Constitutional conflict in Northern Ireland had been regarded as
largely resolved and settled, but Brexit has altered the wider
constitutional framework within which the 1998 Good Friday
Agreement is situated. With the question of Irish unity gaining
renewed and sustained traction, and with trade, relationships and
politics across "these islands" in a state of flux, Northern
Ireland approaches a constitutional moment. Murphy and Evershed
examine the factors, actors and dynamics that are most likely to be
influential, and potentially transformative, in determining
Northern Ireland's constitutional future. This book offers an
assessment of how Brexit and its fallout may lead to constitutional
upheaval, and a cautionary warning about the need to prepare for
it.

The implications of Brexit for Northern Ireland are profound, given
its history and geographical position as a land border with the
European Union. Four decades of sectarian violence have been
replaced by a period of sustained peace, economic growth and
development, yet the trenchant political divide remains. The
ongoing fractious relations within the Northern Irish Assembly
threaten to derail any hope the region might have on influencing
the discussion and direction of the Brexit negotiations. Mary C.
Murphy offers a detailed and in-depth analysis of Northern
Ireland's relationship with the EU, the role the EU has played in
rebuilding the region after the Troubles, and the challenges and
opportunities that Brexit might offer Northern Ireland in terms of
its fragile politics and economy. Northern Ireland has long
occupied a greater political space than might seem warranted, given
its size and relatively underdeveloped economy. This space may yet
again become the most hotly contested and divisive topic in future
Brexit negotiations, if it doesn't in fact prove to be the key to
the successful UK withdrawal and future relations with our European
neighbours.
