Ideology and Educational Reform traces the underlying ideological
problems that make genuine educational reform difficult. It
describes three major themes in public education: common school,
human capital, and clientelism.
Written by pioneers in the study and analysis of very high cycle
fatigue, Gigacycle Fatigue in Mechanical Practice compiles the most
recent findings on gigacycle fatigue phenomena, focusing on
improving the reliability and performance of key engine and machine
components. This reference reflects the explosion of new concepts,
testing methods, and data on very high cycle fatigue and collects
the latest analytical methods and results from renowned authorities
on the subject. About the authors: Claude Bathias is Director of
the Institut des Technologies et des Matriaux Avancs, Conservatoire
National des Arts et Metiers, Paris, France. Previously, he was
director of a research center of CNRS at the University of
Compiegne, France, and an advisor on material science and mechanics
for the French government (1978-1982). He is a Fellow of the
American Society of Materials, among other organizations, and is
the author or coauthor of six books on materials and mechanics. He
holds a Doctorate in mechanical engineering and completed graduate
studies at the University of Poitiers, France, and the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge. PAUL C. Missouri.
World-renowned for his contributions to fracture mechanics, he is
the third recipient of the Crichlow Trust Prize from the American
Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics for lifetime
contributions to aircraft structural analysis, as well as a
recipient of the Charles B. Dudley Medal from the American Society
for Testing Materials. He received the B.S. degree (1953) in
engineering mechanics from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor,
and the M.S. (1955) and Ph.D. (1962) degrees in applied mechanics
from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
A detailed tracing, from acceptable sources, of archaeological and
paleontologi cal discoveries made up to the present time leads us
to suppose that approximate ly in 8000 y B. C., in Southern
Turkestan, man succeeded in domesticating the first cattle, which
he later took with him as he migrated from this remote region of
Central Asia. Step by step, Europe and Asia have been gradually
inhabited by domesticated cattle which have been incorporated into
man's economy, both as a source of food and work. The same happened
in America and Australasia, continents where cattle were taken by
the European colonizing groups during the course of the 16th to the
18th centuries. Possibly the common cattle tick also reached these
continents at the same time, accompanying its most frequent host.
The cattle tick, Boophilus microplus, parasitizes Asiatic cattle
races (with spe cial reference to the zebu, Bos indicus), but
generally the level of infestation is not high, only a few engorged
females being detected, generally no more than ten. When cattle of
European races are infested by Boophilus microplus, how ever, the
level of parasitism is higher, sometimes reaching limits
incompatible with the life of the host."
Nearly double the size of the previous edition, the third edition
of the classic reference provides a comprehensive, easy-to-access
collection of elastic stress solutions for crack configurations.
For each configuration, The Stress Analysis of Cracks Handbook
presents crack-tip stress intensity formulas along with other
relevant information, such as displacements, crack opening areas,
basic stress functions source references, accuracy of solutions,
and more. Throughout, it stresses formulas for application to test
configurations. The introductory section details the methods of
developing the information. A series of appendices presents special
methods and special applications. The authors also provide 30 new
solution pages, plus modifications of older solutions.
viennent illustrer chaque rubrique.
