David C. Parker
R5,703 Discovery Miles 57 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

David C. Parker is one of the world's foremost specialists in the study of the New Testament text and of Greek and Latin manuscripts. In addition to editions, monographs and more popular writings, he has published many articles on different aspects of textual criticism. This volume brings together twentyfive of them in a revised and updated version. The collection is divided into three topics. The first deals with manuscript studies. As well as three very different studies of Codex Bezae, there are articles and reports on individual manuscripts and classes of manuscripts and reports on visits to libraries. The second section has the theme of textual criticism. It includes broader studies dealing with the theory of the discipline and more detailed discussions of particular problems, including translations into Latin, techniques for grouping Greek manuscripts, and the comparison of modern editions. The third section contains papers in which Parker has discussed the often overlooked relationship between textual criticism and theology. These studies explore particular textual problems and their wider significance, and cover topics as varied as "Jesus and Textual Criticism", "Calvin's Biblical Text" and "The Early Tradition of Jesus' Sayings on Divorce".

Alexander C. Parker
R716 Discovery Miles 7 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Jesus of the Future is a novel presenting a totally different option for stories about God and Jesus; it takes you through a "fictional creation" and several well know Bible stories. Each provides a different view from what you find in the Holy Bible, but with a somewhat same conclusion; there is an extensive disclaimer that acknowledges the Holy Bible as true and that no part of the novel is to take the place of the actual Word of God, as is in the Holy Bible.

There is an extraterrestrial portion, in which a human man and a visitor from another world become friends; from this comes the ability to create the first and totally genetically artificial life-form, which becomes Jesus.

Another section describes how Jesus is born, is raised, lives and dies; it offers a continuous message of salvation. Again it presents a totally different way for Jesus to have lived; even so, He does die for the sins of mankind by crucifixion, and the final part tells of the return and promise of everlasting life.

This work of fiction provides direct, firm, clear direction for becoming a born-again Christian. There is a very clear message on the promised return of Jesus Christ.

This is the first of a planned series. The second volume will be titled The Book of Short Stories and will tell how God worked in the lives of different people.

H.A.G. Houghton, David C. Parker, Holger Strutwolf
R4,587 Discovery Miles 45 870 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Klaus Wachtel has pioneered the creation of major editions of the Greek New Testament through a blend of traditional philological approaches and innovative digital tools. In this volume, an international range of New Testament scholars and editors honour his achievements with thirty-one original studies. Many of the themes mirror Wachtel's own publications on the history of the Byzantine text, the identification of manuscript families and groups, detailed analysis of individual witnesses and the development of software and databases to support the editorial process. Other contributions draw on the production of the Editio Critica Maior, with reference to the Gospels of Mark and John, the Acts of the Apostles, the Pauline Epistles and the Apocalypse. Several chapters consider the application of the Coherence-Based Genealogical Method. A wide selection of material is considered, from papyri to printed editions. The Greek text is analysed from multiple perspectives, including exegesis, grammar and orthography, alongside evidence from versions in Latin, Syriac, Coptic and Gothic. This collection provides new insights into the history of the biblical text and the creation, development, analysis and application of modern editions.

-Paul R. Gully, MB, ChB, FRCPC, FFPH, World Health Organization, Geneva Switzerland (From the Foreword)

To date, little guidance exists for health care professionals who want and need new ways to communicate health information with each other, their patients, and the general public. To address this need, Health Communication in the New Media Landscape presents innovative, media-based methods of communication to graduate students, educators, health care professionals, public health officials, and communication experts.

The authors are confident that, if implemented wisely, technology can and will transform the face of health communication as we know it.
This unique book addresses the following:
The role technology can and will play in health communication How new media can be used to improve health literacy How patients can learn about health-related issues and health care New ways practitioners will be able to communicate with their patients How persons with chronic diseases learn about resources, support systems, and rehabilitation The impact of the new media landscape on health care providers, insurance companies, and health care policies

The History of Educational Administration Viewed Through Its Textbooks (Paperback, New): Thomas E Glass The History of Educational Administration Viewed Through Its Textbooks (Paperback, New)
Thomas E Glass; Contributions by Robert Mason, William Eaton, James C Parker, Fred D Carver
R1,709 Discovery Miles 17 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The History of Educational Administration Viewed Through Its Texts provides the reader a history of the development of the professional field of educational administration. From the Common School Era of the 1840s through the Era of Accountability in 2000, leaders of the profession wrote textbooks to both inform and instruct those desiring to follow in their footsteps. Historical leaders such as Elwood Cubberley, George Strayer, George Counts, and Jesse Sears are identified, and the ways in which their work influenced the profession and the public schools is examined. The various management themes running through the practice of educational administration over a 150-year period are also discussed. Among these themes is the administrator as a: philosopher and manager of virtue, scientific manager, executive, transformational leader, instructional leader in a time of high stakes accountability. The schools of "thought" affecting the preparation of education administrators is also discussed in the framework of general educational administration textbooks. The early textbooks written by the "grandfathers" were compendiums of "best practice" later eclipsed in the 1960s by a "theory movement" to make practice more scientific. This "new movement" was based on research in the social and behavioral sciences. The "theory movement" presently seems to be giving way to a return of textbooks being compendiums of best practice based on "professional" standards. Lastly, an exploration of the development and impact the specialization of the field has had on both textbooks and practice is included. The splintering of the educational administration professorate into finance, law, policy, personnel, and other specialties has had a profound impact on textbooks and practice. The development of standards dictating certification and licensing has also been influenced by specialization as opposed to general preparation. This book is a must for university libraries and every doctoral student writing a dissertation in educatio

Codex Bezae is one of the most important primary sources in New Testament scholarship. Since its rediscovery in the sixteenth century it has continued to fascinate scholars, who have remained intrigued by the riddles of its general appearance and textual characteristics. David Parker makes the first comprehensive investigation of the manuscript for over a century, and sets out to uncover the story behind this most enigmatic of manuscripts. By studying the characteristics of Codex Bezae, both physical and textual, and by comparing its Greek and Latin texts, the author aims to show how a bilingual tradition developed, and thus to discover as much as possible about its earliest stages, which leads to an important new theory about its origins. In a final section, the general character of the text is assessed with a view to what this can tell us of the earliest traditions about Jesus.

Education for Liberal Democracy - Using Classroom Discussion to Build Knowledge and Voice (Paperback): Walter C. Parker Education for Liberal Democracy - Using Classroom Discussion to Build Knowledge and Voice (Paperback)
Walter C. Parker
R1,291 Discovery Miles 12 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Our democracy is in crisis. Both political trust and a shared standard of truth are broken. In this book, Walter Parker shows why and how a civic education can help. Offering a centrist approach suitable for a polarized society, Parker focuses on two linked curriculum objectives: disciplinary knowledge and voice. He illustrates how classroom discussion, alongside concept formation and deep reading, expand students' minds while developing their ability to speak with others and form opinions. When children come to school, they emerge from the private chrysalis of babyhood and kin to interact with a diverse student body along with teachers, curriculum, instruction, and the school's unique mission: education. Parker argues that these assets make school the ideal place to teach young people the liberal arts of studying and discussing public issues and academic controversies, both in and beyond school. The chapters in this collection, spanning 20 years and coming from one of civic education's most influential scholars, show that voice can be taught right alongside disciplinary knowledge. Drawing students into dialogue with one another on the curriculum's central questions is a teacher's most ambitious goal and, when it happens, teaching's greatest accomplishment. Book Features: Argues that the proper aim of civic education in schools is to shore up liberal democracy. Shows how discussion can be a main course, and not a side dish, of classroom instruction. Demonstrates how to use discussion to develop voice, defined as the freedom to make and express uncoerced decisions, and disciplinary knowledge, defined as the knowledge that results from a public process of error-seeking, contestation, and validation. Explains why students need to learn both disciplinary knowledge and voice if they are to take their place on the public stage and hold the "office of citizen" in a democracy. Treats subject-centered and student-centered instruction as partners, not opponents.
