This book provides an overview of the emerging field of in situ
visualization, i.e. visualizing simulation data as it is generated.
In situ visualization is a processing paradigm in response to
recent trends in the development of high-performance computers. It
has great promise in its ability to access increased temporal
resolution and leverage extensive computational power. However, the
paradigm also is widely viewed as limiting when it comes to
exploration-oriented use cases. Furthermore, it will require
visualization systems to become increasingly complex and
constrained in usage. As research efforts on in situ visualization
are growing, the state of the art and best practices are rapidly
maturing. Specifically, this book contains chapters that reflect
state-of-the-art research results and best practices in the area of
in situ visualization. Our target audience are researchers and
practitioners from the areas of mathematics computational science,
high-performance computing, and computer science that work on or
with in situ techniques, or desire to do so in future.

Kendo is the first in-depth historical, cultural, and political
account in English of the Japanese martial art of swordsmanship,
from its beginnings in military training and arcane medieval
schools to its widespread practice as a global sport today.
Alexander Bennett shows how kendo evolved through a recurring
process of "inventing tradition," which served the changing
ideologies and needs of Japanese warriors and governments over the
course of history. Kendo follows the development of Japanese
swordsmanship from the aristocratic-aesthetic pretensions of
medieval warriors in the Muromachi period, to the samurai elitism
of the Edo regime, and then to the nostalgic patriotism of the
Meiji state. Kendo was later influenced in the 1930s and 1940s by
ultra nationalist militarists and ultimately by the postwar
government, which sought a gentler form of nationalism to rekindle
appreciation of traditional culture among Japan's youth and to
garner international prestige as an instrument of "soft power."
Today kendo is becoming increasingly popular internationally. But
even as new organizations and clubs form around the world, cultural
exclusiveness continues to play a role in kendo's ongoing
evolution, as the sport remains closely linked to Japan's sense of
collective identity.
African mole-rats are a unique taxon of subterranean rodents that range in sociality from solitary-dwelling species to two "eusocial" species, the Damaraland mole-rat and the naked mole-rat. The naked mole-rat is arguably the closest that a mammal comes to behaving like social insects such as bees and termites, with large colonies and a behavioral and reproductive division of labor. As a family, the Bathyergidae represent a model system with which to study the evolution and maintenance of highly social cooperative breeding strategies. In this book, Nigel Bennett and Chris Faulkes provide a synthesis of the current knowledge of bathyergid systematics, ecology, reproductive biology, behavior, and genetics. They explore the role of these factors in the evolution of sociality in the Bathyergidae in the context of both vertebrates and invertebrates. This volume will be an important new resource for anyone interested in the evolution of sociality, specifically in mole-rats.
