Are you are confused and irritated about the Legal System? Do you feel the 'Politicians' make too much money from special interest groups? Are you watching our Rights being "subverted" into 'privileges'. This book is a true account of what took place from the years 1983 - 2001 and the "Laws that were violated by State and County Officials" under the "Color of Law" and "Insider Trading" during the Enron Investigation.

D. F. Karnosky, K. E. Percy, A. H. Chappelka, C. Simpson, J. Pikkarainen
R2,979 Discovery Miles 29 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The chapters in this book present a snapshot of the state of knowledge of air pollution effects at the beginning of the 21st century. From their different disciplines, a distinguished collection of authors document their understanding of how leaves, trees, and forests respond to air pollutants and climate change. Scenarios of global change and air pollution are described. The authors describe responses of forests to climate variability, tropospheric ozone, rising atmospheric CO2, the combination of CO2 and ozone, and deposition of acidic compounds and heavy metals. The responses to ozone receive particular attention because of increasing concern about its damaging effects and increasing concentrations in rural areas. Scaling issues are addressed - from leaves to trees, from juvenile trees to mature trees, from short-term responses to long-term responses, and from small-scale experiments and observations to large-scale forest ecosystems.

This book is one major product of a conference sponsored by the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations, the USDA Forest Service Global Change Northern Stations Program, the Arthur Ross Foundation, NCASI, the Canadian Forest Service, and Michigan Technological University. The conference, held in May 2000 in Houghton, Michigan, USA, was appropriately titled "Air Pollution, Global Change, and Forests in the New Millennium." The Editors, David Karnosky, Kevin Percy, Art Chappelka, Caroline Simpson, and Janet Pikkarainen organized the conference and edited this book.

The Unfinished Project - Toward a Postmetaphysical Humanism (Paperback, 3 Ed): Lorenzo C. Simpson The Unfinished Project - Toward a Postmetaphysical Humanism (Paperback, 3 Ed)
Lorenzo C. Simpson
R1,236 Discovery Miles 12 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Is community possible within culturally diverse societies? As humanity becomes increasingly interconnected through globalisation, this question is once more of concern in contemporary thought. Simpson traces the debate thorough the works of Arnold, Herder, Adorno, Habermas and others and proposes an alternative that bridges cultural differences without erasing them. He argues that in order to achieve cross-cultural understanding we must establish common aesthetic and ethical standards which incorporate sensitivity to difference.

Lorenzo C. Simpson
R4,214 Discovery Miles 42 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Technology, Time and the Conversations of Modernity" takes as its impetus the idea that technology is an embodiment of our uneasiness with finitude. Lorenzo Simpson shows how technology has succeeded in granting our wish to domesticate time. He addresses the consequences of this attitude for our self-understanding and for our ability to discover differences and discern meaning in our lives. By confronting issues raised in the various theoretical discourses concerning modernity with those engendered by a critical assessment of technology, Simpson elaborates a systematic critique of technological rationality. In the course of this, he provides a critique of philosophical nihilism, an account of the affinities between postmodern sensibilities and the technological attitude toward the world - illustrated by a discussion of Virtual Reality technology - as well as critical discussion of the work of Rorty, Habermas, MacIntyre and Sabina Lovibond.

R3,666 Discovery Miles 36 660 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Hermeneutics has frequently been dismissed as useful only for literary and textual analysis. Some consider it to be Eurocentric or inherently relativistic and thus unsuited to social critique. Lorenzo C. Simpson offers a persuasive and powerful argument that hermeneutics is a valuable tool not only for critical theory but also for robustly addressing many of the urgent issues of today. Simpson demonstrates that hermeneutics exhibits significant interpretive advantages compared to competing explanatory modalities. While it shares with pragmatism a suspicion of essentialism, an understanding that disagreements are situated, and an insistence on the dialogical nature of understanding, it nevertheless resolutely rejects the relativistic accounts of rationality that are often associated with pragmatism. In the tradition of Gadamer, Simpson firmly establishes hermeneutics as a resource for both philosophy and the social sciences. He shows its utility for unpacking intractable issues in the philosophy of science, multiculturalism, social epistemology, and racial and social justice in the global arena. Simpson addresses fraught questions such as why recent claims that "race" has a biological basis lack grounding, whether female genital excision can be critically addressed without invidious ethnocentrism, and how to lay the foundations for meaningful cross-cultural dialogue and reparative justice. This book reveals how hermeneutics can be a worthy partner with critical theory in achieving emancipatory aims.

The Waterloo-Bournemouth Line has often been referred to as 'Britain's last steam-worked main line' and at the start of summer 1966 it remained steam-worked Monday-Friday, with the weekends taken over by Crompton Type 3 diesels. From here on, however, there was a steady decline in steam services and the final end came on Sunday 9 July 1967. This book charts the beginning of the end of Southern Region steam from summer 1966 to July 1967. The author provides an overall account of the South Western Division steam locomotives sheds at the time, describing locomotive transfer and withdrawal dates using the original official notices issued by the General Manager's Office, Waterloo - the most reliable source available. The book then explains SR diagramming practice and with the help from the original notes of many contributors, provides a considerable database of train sightings for the period to provide an actual comparison with the locomotive diagrams. The sightings also reveal, among many things, that steam locomotives were often called upon to provide coverage for the failures of the emerging new motive power. The final chapter is devoted to the last four weeks of steam working and includes extracts from a number of SR documents that explain the plan behind the steam workings. A wealth of memorable photographs illustrate the detailed text, and provide an uplifting and lasting memory of the final days of steam on the Southern.

Alan Cobley, Victor C Simpson
R1,044 Discovery Miles 10 440 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This work is a collection of selected papers presented at the conference "Trajectories of Freedom: Caribbean Societies, 1807-2007", a theme inspired by the two-hundredth anniversary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade in the British Empire. The papers interrogate and problematise shifting notions and expressions of "freedom" as they have evolved in Caribbean societies over the past two hundred years and as they have been applied in the context of the contemporary Caribbean. Together, these essays illustrate the historical and continuing efforts in the various spheres of human endeavour in the Caribbean, including culture, education, language, social organisation, gender and politics - notwithstanding the constraints placed on Caribbean people by the legacies of slavery and colonialism - to finish the business of emancipation. Ryne Waldron, a living legend at the edge of madness is haunted by a murderous past and the voices of his power that whisper in his head. Hunted, he strives to defend a village he swore to protect. When he discovers he's targeted for death by beings that seemed to have stepped from the history of an ancient war, his only choice is to flee. Irmina Nagel, Ancel's former lover, and an assassin sent to find Ryne, is mired in her quest for revenge on Ancel's parents, and must set aside her emotions or fail her final test. What she discovers may not only change her life but the world as a whole. Caught between warring nations, vengeful leaders, magic and steel, myth and men, the fate of millions hang in the balance. Who can unite the kingdoms against a common threat? Who shall bring the power that drives the world to heel? Who will walk the knife's edge of harmony? If none can, then Denestia is doomed.
