Paul J.J. Welfens and Holger C. Wolf While the economies of Asia
and, more recently, South as well as North America have enjoyed
sustained high growth, the growth performance of western Europe and
in particular continental Europe has been rather modest. Coupled
with sizable improvements in labor productivity and - at best -
steady capital productivity, growth proved insufficient to sustain
employment levels, much less to replicate the US job creation
success. Relative inflation performance has been much better: in
the run-up to European Monetary Union inflation rates have
dramatically converged towards the lower end of the distribution
while risk premia on formerly high inflation economies have fallen.
Yet, looking forward, the undoubted success in achieving price
stability is mitigated by the lackluster growth -and in particular
employment -performance. Indeed, the relative little attention paid
to initiatives directed at raising economic growth is startling,
not only in the light of the US policy record but also in light of
the remarkable rebound of those European economies which have
aggressively tackled the structural problems, most prominently the
UK and Ireland.
Employed for both cosmetic and reconstructive purposes, breast
implants are one of the most widely-used and controversial
prostheses available. The development of safe, reliable products is
vital to the future of this important field of surgery.
Biomaterials in plastic surgery reviews the history, materials and
safety issues associated with breast implants.
Beginning with an introduction to the history of biomaterials used
for breast augmentation, Biomaterials in plastic surgery goes on to
discuss development issues. It then discusses the chemistry and
physical properties of biomedical silicones before reviewing
cohesive gel and polyurethane foam implants. The book concludes by
analysing the epidemiological evidence on the safety issues
relating to breast implants, followed by a review of retrieval and
analysis of breast implants emphasizing strength, durability and
failure mechanisms.
With its distinguished editors and international team of expert
contributors, Biomaterials in plastic surgery is an important guide
for surgeons, manufacturers and all those researching this
important field.

In the long shadow of a presidential election rife with charges of
sexist actions, this book explains how very common such behavior is
among executives, why law doesn't protect victims, and how female
professionals can bring change. Who do you report sexism to when
the offender owns the company? "Overt and intentional sexism"
against women by powerful men in politics, business, and academia
and across the white-collar world in public and private
institutions is common, according to author Elizabeth C. Wolfe, a
conflict analysis and resolution specialist. Female executives,
even at the pinnacle of their careers, remain vulnerable to their
male colleagues. In this book, Wolfe details how men treat women at
the highest levels and the result of their actions. Women
executives from nine countries explain how their career advancement
and earning potential are continuously harmed though overt sexism,
sexist social behavior, and microaggressions--those damaging
behaviors that are in a gray area but are not legally actionable.
She further examines why law does not protect these women: sexism,
like racism, is a way of thinking and so cannot be legislated. Each
"-ism" has legal protections against documentable actions, but ways
of thinking, socializing rituals, and microaggressions are not
actionable by law. Wolfe details the minds of sexists and describes
how sexism is "socialized," and then explains how to name each
sexist behavior, address it, and take action to stop it. Spotlights
the emotional and career fallout for female professionals targeted
by executive men's "locker room talk" Considers why onlookers don't
intervene, known as the "bystander effect" Reveals why female
victims remain silent and how speaking out can be fatal to their
career Details why successful action to stop sexism demands an
alliance of women and men who support their cause
Banned in his native Singapore, Chay Yew has been hailed as "a
promising new voice in American theater" by Time magazine. With
these two powerful, provocative plays, Yew first brought his
startling and poetic voice to stages across America and abroad,
exploring the battlegrounds, both internal and external, where
matters of the heart conflict with barriers of race and sexuality.
Porcelain is an examination of a young man's crime of passion.
Triply scorned -- as an Asian, a homosexual, and now a murderer --
19-year-old John Lee has confessed to shooting his lover in a
public lavatory in London. A winner of the London Fringe Award for
Best Play, Porcelain dissects the crime through a prism of
conflicting voices: newscasts, flashbacks, and John's own
recollections to a prison psychiatrist. A Language of Their Own is
a lyrical and dramatic meditation on the nature of desire and
sexuality as four men -- three Asian and one white -- come together
and drift apart in a series of interconnected stories. A critical
and popular success at New York's Public Theater, it won both the
George and Elisabeth Marton Playwriting Award and the GLAAD Media
Award for Best Play.

From Chaplina (TM)s tramp to the Bathing Beauties, from madcap
chases to skyscraper perils, slapstick comedy supplied many of the
most enduring icons of American cinema in the silent era. This
collection of fourteen essays by prominent film scholars challenges
longstanding critical dogma and offers new conceptual frameworks
for thinking about silent comedya (TM)s place in film history and
American culture. The contributors discuss a broad range of topics
including the contested theatrical or cinematic origins of
slapstick; the comic spectacle of crazy technology and trick
stunts; the filmmakers who shaped the style of early slapstick; and
comedya (TM)s implications for theories of film form and
spectatorship.
This volume is essential reading for anyone seeking to
understand the origins and continued importance of a film genre at
the heart of American cinema from its earliest days to today.

Philosophy has long puzzled over the relation between mind and
brain. This volume presents some of the state-of-the-art
reflections on philosophical efforts to 'make sense' of
neuroscience, as regards issue including neuroaesthetics, brain
science and the law, neurofeminism, embodiment, race, memory and

No boardroom in any industry is safe from new market threats in
this time of rapid technological growth. We've all heard the
stories of corruption by CEOs at WeWork and Theranos and witnessed
whistleblowers revealing crises at Wells Fargo and Uber. The
board's responsibility in this time shifts from protecting not just
shareholders, but all stakeholders. Disruption in the Boardroom
delves into the details of modern corporations and how governance
and oversight can lead us into an evolving digital future.
Corporate culture is changing every day, and everybody at the
top-from senior executives of well-funded startups to decades old
stalwarts of industries-are being watched more closely than ever
Disruption in the Boardroom calls for leaders to embrace
intellectual honesty, moral courage, and a discipline for
continuous learning in order to have good corporate governance.
Author Jennifer Wolfe addresses questions that hit home for present
and future board members, the overarching one being: how can a
handful of people successfully oversee a company and the entirety
of its actions? This book details case studies of past mistakes and
lessons from current board members and provides expert insights on
how to structure future governance. Disruption in the Boardroom
walks you through stories of both triumphs and errors in crucial
decisions made by boards of companies you know well. Whether you
are a senior executive, a corporate board director, or simply a
curious reader on the topic of business decisions of the current
day, Wolfe's expertise provides you with invaluable knowledge that
you deserve to have on your bookshelf. The "move fast and break
things" mentality has disrupted every industry, and it will only
continue to shift the way we as a business culture approach the
future of work. Don't fall behind. What You Will Learn Take a look
at good and bad examples of how board members at different
companies have dealt with emerging issues Understand the changing
role of the board Examine how new technologies are rapidly change
business models Who This Book is For Senior executives, VCs and
private equity associates, corporate board directors and curious
readers.

This fourth edition contains a few additional figures. Otherwise
only typographical er rors have been removed. The final chapter on
Fundamentals of the Quantum Theory of Chemical Bonding is continued
in an extended way in the textbook Molecular Physics and Elements
of Quantum Chemistry by the same authors. This book contains, in
particular, a profound presentation of group theory as applied to
atoms and molecules. Furthermore, the in teraction between atoms
and molecules and light is treated in detail. We thank again
Springer-Verlag, in particular Dr. H.1. Kblsch and Mr. C.-D. Bachem
for their excellent cooperation as always, and Prof. W. D. Brewer
for his con tinuous support in translating our German text.
Stuttgart, February 1994 H. Haken H. C. Wolf Preface to the Third
Edition The second edition of this book again enjoyed a very
positive reception from both uni versity teachers and students. In
this edition we have removed all of the typographical errors that
came to our attention. In order to keep the book as current as
possible, new developments in the direct observation of individual
atoms in electromagnetic traps (Paul traps) and of atoms in
molecules on solid surfaces using the scanning tunnel microscope
have been added to this edition.

This volume contains extended abstracts of the 10 plenary lectures,
27 invited symposium lectures and ap- proximately 300 contributed
papers that were presented at the 25th Congress Ampere. The
contributions cover the full range of magnetic resonance and
radiospectroscopy and their applications in physics, chemical
physics, medicine and biology. Advanced NMR and ESR techniques are
treated, as are their applications to novel materials.
Atomic physics and its underlying quantum theory are the point of
departure for many modern areas of physics, astrophysics,
chemistry, biology, and even electrical engineering. This textbook
provides a careful and eminently readable introduction to the
results and methods of empirical atomic physics. The student will
acquire the tools of quantum physics and at the same time learn
about the interplay between experiment and theory. A chapter on the
quantum theory of the chemical bond provides the reader with an
introduction to molecular physics. Plenty of problems are given to
elucidate the material. The authors also discuss laser physics and
nonlinear spectroscopy, incorporating latest experimental results
and showing their relevance to basic research. Extra items in the
second edition include solutions to the exercises, derivations of
the relativistic Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations, a detailed
theoretical derivation of the Lamb shift, a discussion of new
developments in the spectroscopy of inner shells, and new
applications of NMR spectroscopy, for instance tomography.
