This book gathers high-quality papers presented at the 5th
International Conference on Intelligent Computing, Communication
& Devices (ICCD 2019), held in Xi'an, China on November 22-24,
2019. The contributions focus on emergent fields of intelligent
computing and the development of a new generation of intelligent
systems. Further, they discuss virtually all dimensions of the
intelligent sciences, including intelligent computing, intelligent
communication and intelligent devices.
Research on high-level synthesis started over twenty years ago, but
lower-level tools were not available to seriously support the
insertion of high-level synthesis into the mainstream design
methodology. Since then, substantial progress has been made in
formulating and understanding the basic concepts in high-level
synthesis. Although many open problems remain, high-level synthesis
has matured. High-Level Synthesis: Introduction to Chip and System
Design presents a summary of the basic concepts and results and
defines the remaining open problems. This is the first textbook on
high-level synthesis and includes the basic concepts, the main
algorithms used in high-level synthesis and a discussion of the
requirements and essential issues for high-level synthesis systems
and environments. A reference text like this will allow the
high-level synthesis community to grow and prosper in the future.
One of the most important issues in the construction of future
magnetic confinement fusion machines is that of the materials of
which they are constructed, and one of the key points of proper
material choice is the recycle of hydrogen isotopes with materials
at the plasma face. Tritium machines demand high safety and
economy, which in turn requires the lowest possible T inventory and
smallest possible permeation through the plasma facing materials.
The recycle behaviour of the in-vessel components must also be
known if the plasma reaction is to predictable and controllable,
and finally, the fuel cycle and plasma operating regimes may be
actively controlled by special materials and methods. The book
discusses both laboratory experiments exploring the basic
properties of non-equilibrium hydrogen-solid systems (diffusion,
absorption, boundary processes) and experimental results obtained
from existing fusion machines under conditions simulating future
situations to some extent. Contributions are from experts in the
fields of nuclear fusion, materials science, surface science,
vacuum science and technology, and solid state physics.

This book reflects the recent developments while providing a
comprehensive introduction to the Internet of things (IoT) and
cloud technologies in transforming aging. IoT has its origins in
device connectivity, whereas the cloud grew out of computer
science. They can be viewed as two facets of the same field, and
together they have undergone substantial development over the past
ten years. This book is aimed at advanced undergraduates or
first-year research students, as well as researchers and
practitioners, and assumes no previous knowledge of IoT and cloud
concepts. Basics of computer applications and concepts are
required. Some familiarity with gerontechnology would be helpful,
though not essential, as this book includes a self-contained
introduction to how technology is transforming elderly care and
eHealth management. This book aims to give references that offer
more detail than is possible here and hopefully provide an entry
point into a series of technologies that can improve the quality of
life for the elderly. The book includes several case studies
explaining how each piece of technology works and its benefits to
the elderly. This book is also considered as a simple guide to the
technologies for the elderly to use in the community.

Molecular diagnosis and gene therapy are of increasing interest and
importance in clinical medicine. The increasing understanding of
the pathogenesis of human diseases at the molecular level opens new
perspectives for their diagnosis, prevention and therapy. The first
part of this book, the proceedings of Falk Symposium No. 88
'Molecular Diagnosis and Gene Therapy', held in Basel, Switzerland,
October 22-23, 1995, is aimed at an in-depth understanding of the
methodology of molecular diagnosis by hybridization analysis,
polymerase chain reaction and others. Further, the applications and
limitations of these technologies in clinical medicine for the
detection of genetic, malignant and infectious diseases are
reviewed. In the second part of the book, the basic strategies of
gene therapy are presented, including gene transfer and targeting.
Further, experimental and clinical applications of gene therapy
strategies for the prevention and treatment of hepatic and other
diseases are presented. Molecular diagnosis and gene therapy are
clearly going to be key elements of clinical medicine after the
year 2000. In this sense, the book should allow basic scientists as
well as clinicians to be informed about the state-of-the-art of
molecular diagnosis and gene therapy and should provide a
perspective for future developments in molecular medicine.
When John C. H. Wu's spiritual autobiography Beyond East and West
was published in 1951, it became an instant Catholic best seller
and was compared to Thomas Merton's The Seven Storey Mountain,
which had appeared four years earlier. It was also hailed as the
new Confession of St. Augustine for its moving description of Wu's
conversion in 1937 and early years as a Catholic. This new edition,
including a foreward written by Wu's son John Wu, Jr., makes this
profoundly beautiful book by one of the most influential Chinese
lay Catholic intellectuals of the twentieth century available for a
new generation of readers hungry for spiritual sustenance. Beyond
East and West recounts the story of Wu's early life in Ningpo,
China, his family and friendships, education and law career,
drafting of the constitution of the Republic of China, translation
of the Bible into classical Chinese in collaboration with Chinese
president Chiang Kai-Shek, and his role as China's delegate to the
Holy See. In passages of arresting beauty, the book reveals the
development of his thought and the progress of his growth toward
love of God, arriving through experience at the conclusion that the
wisdom in all of China's traditions, especially Confucian thought,
Taoism, and Buddhism, point to universal truths that come from, and
are fulfilled in, Christ. In Beyond East and West, Wu develops a
synthesis between Catholicism and the ancient culture of the
Orient. A sublime expression of faith, here is a book for anyone
who seeks the peace of the spirit, a memorable book whose ideas
will linger long after its pages are closed.
