The Sexual Politics of Asylum - Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in the UK Asylum System (Hardcover): Calogero Giametta The Sexual Politics of Asylum - Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in the UK Asylum System (Hardcover)
Calogero Giametta
R4,629 Discovery Miles 46 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Today within neoliberal democracies, gender and sexuality provisions give people the opportunity of being granted social and legal protection. But how does the asylum system intervene within claimants' understandings of themselves and in what ways does this affect their livelihoods in the country of arrival? The Sexual Politics of Asylum emerges from a 2 year long ethnography, which explores the experiences of 60 gender and sexual minority refugees in the UK. Bringing previously unheard stories to the forefront, this enlightening volume challenges dominant notions about the construction of sexuality and gender as an instrument for claiming rights in a world shaped by postcolonial relations. Giametta first examines why the migratory experience of the studied migrants is located within a set of humanitarian-inflected discourses that privilege suffering and trauma. This is then followed by an assessment of the respondents' biographical accounts, which consequently uncovers how being situated in liminal socio-political and legal interstices produces precarious forms of life. Whilst the topic of asylum for gender and sexual minorities has attracted wide media coverage over the past decade, there persists a lack of academic attention to the complex experiences of these refugees. As such, this timely book will be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in human rights, sociology, anthropology, migration, sexuality, gender and cultural studies, as well as people working within the refugee granting process.

A First Course in Options Pricing Theory: Simone Calogero A First Course in Options Pricing Theory
Simone Calogero
R2,183 R2,032 Discovery Miles 20 320 Save R151 (7%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Among the many branches of applied mathematics, options pricing theory occupies a unique position: it utilizes a wide range of advanced mathematical concepts, making it appealing to mathematicians, and it is regularly applied at financial institutions, making it indispensable to practitioners. The emergence of artificial intelligence in the financial industry has led to further interest in mathematical finance and has increased the demand for literature on this subject that is accessible to a large audience. This book presents a self-contained introduction to options pricing theory and includes a complete discussion of the required concepts in finance and probability theory; an introduction to basic models, emphasizing both critical thinking and practical applications; and over 200 exercises, several Python codes for the analysis and application of the options pricing models, and numerical projects intended to help close the gap between theory and practice. A First Course in Options Pricing Theory is suitable for an advanced undergraduate course on financial mathematics and options pricing theory in engineering, computer science, and applied mathematics programs. The reader is assumed to be familiar with the standard material in calculus and linear algebra. Stochastic calculus is not used in the book.

Jozef Banas, Mohamed Jleli, Mohammad Mursaleen, Bessem Samet, Calogero Vetro
R3,621 Discovery Miles 36 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a comprehensive treatment of the theory of measures of noncompactness. It discusses various applications of the theory of measures of noncompactness, in particular, by addressing the results and methods of fixed-point theory. The concept of a measure of noncompactness is very useful for the mathematical community working in nonlinear analysis. Both these theories are especially useful in investigations connected with differential equations, integral equations, functional integral equations and optimization theory. Thus, one of the book's central goals is to collect and present sufficient conditions for the solvability of such equations. The results are established in miscellaneous function spaces, and particular attention is paid to fractional calculus.

Isochronous Systems (Paperback): Francesco Calogero Isochronous Systems (Paperback)
Francesco Calogero
R1,493 Discovery Miles 14 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A dynamical system is called isochronous if it features in its phase space an open, fully-dimensional region where all its solutions are periodic in all its degrees of freedom with the same, fixed period. Recently a simple transformation has been introduced, applicable to quite a large class of dynamical systems, that yields autonomous systems which are isochronous. This justifies the notion that isochronous systems are not rare. In this book the procedure to manufacture isochronous systems is reviewed, and many examples of such systems are provided. Examples include many-body problems characterized by Newtonian equations of motion in spaces of one or more dimensions, Hamiltonian systems, and also nonlinear evolution equations (PDEs). The book shall be of interest to students and researchers working on dynamical systems, including integrable and nonintegrable models, with a finite or infinite number of degrees of freedom. It might be used as a basic textbook, or as backup material for an undergraduate or graduate course.

Caravans in Socio-Cultural Perspective - Past and Present: Persis B. Clarkson, Calogero M. Santoro Caravans in Socio-Cultural Perspective - Past and Present
Persis B. Clarkson, Calogero M. Santoro
R1,240 Discovery Miles 12 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ranging across space and time, this book brings together up-to-date research on the socio-cultural phenomenon of caravans. It shows that caravans for long-distance trade in arid lands are present in both the Old and New Worlds. Alongside historical and archival records, ethnographic analyses of modern caravans provide theoretical frameworks for reconstructing aspects of ancient caravans such as behaviour, ritual and material culture. The volume reflects on the changing foci of caravan research and the future of caravans, when memories of living caravaners are fading, and the fragile and remote nature of caravan-related sites means that they are at risk. It will be relevant to scholars from anthropology, archaeology and history and others with an interest in trade, travel and nomadism.

Migration, Transfers and Economic Decision Making among Agricultural Households (Paperback): Calogero Carletto, Benjamin Davis,... Migration, Transfers and Economic Decision Making among Agricultural Households (Paperback)
Calogero Carletto, Benjamin Davis, Paul Winters
R1,463 Discovery Miles 14 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The increasing volume of remittances and public transfers in rural areas of the developing world has raised hopes that these cash inflows may serve as an effective mechanism for reducing poverty in the long term by facilitating investments and raising productivity, particularly in agriculture where market failures are most manifest. This book systematically tests the empirical relationship between cash transfers and productive spending in agriculture amongst rural households in six different countries of the developing world. Together, the studies point to little impact of migration and public and private transfers on agricultural productivity, instead facilitating a transition away from agriculture or to a less labour intensive type of agriculture. From a policy perspective the studies raise the question of how to maintain rural economies, as migration and social assistance are unlikely to provide a sustainable way to overcome rural poverty in the long run for those that remain in rural areas. For the foreseeable future, agriculture will play an important role in alleviating poverty and sustaining growth in rural areas. Yet, public and private transfers are not providing much of the impetus needed to raise the sector's productivity. Whether the transfers are invested in agriculture will ultimately depend on the attractiveness of the sector, which is largely determined by the policies of governments and donors. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Development Studies.

F. Calogero; Edited by Vladimir E. Zakharov; Contributions by N. Ercolani, H. Flaschka, V.A. Marchenko, …
R1,421 Discovery Miles 14 210 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

The idea of devoting a complete book to this topic was born at one of the Workshops on Nonlinear and Turbulent Processes in Physics taking place reg ularly in Kiev. With the exception of E. D. Siggia and N. Ercolani, all authors of this volume were participants at the third of these workshops. All of them were acquainted with each other and with each other's work. Yet it seemed to be somewhat of a discovery that all of them were and are trying to understand the same problem - the problem of integrability of dynamical systems, primarily Hamiltonian ones with an infinite number of degrees of freedom. No doubt that they (or to be more exact, we) were led to this by the logical process of scientific evolution which often leads to independent, almost simultaneous discoveries. Integrable, or, more accurately, exactly solvable equations are essential to theoretical and mathematical physics. One could say that they constitute the "mathematical nucleus" of theoretical physics whose goal is to describe real clas sical or quantum systems. For example, the kinetic gas theory may be considered to be a theory of a system which is trivially integrable: the system of classical noninteracting particles. One of the main tasks of quantum electrodynamics is the development of a theory of an integrable perturbed quantum system, namely, noninteracting electromagnetic and electron-positron fields."
