A unique collective portrait of the United Kingdom during the national lockdown of 2020. Introduction by The Duchess of Cambridge. Text by Lemn Sissay MBE. Sunday Times Bestseller. 'Every bookcase should have this book' 'Beautifully heart-warming' and 'a keepsake for years to come'. Focused on three key themes - Helpers and Heroes, Your New Normal and Acts of Kindness, this book presents a unique portrait of the UK during the 2020 lockdown, through 100 community photographs. The net proceeds from the sale of the book will be equally split to support the work of the National Portrait Gallery and Mind, the mental health charity (registered 219830) Spearheaded by The Duchess of Cambridge, Patron of the National Portrait Gallery, Hold Still was an ambitious community project to create a unique collective portrait of the UK during lockdown. People of all ages were invited to submit a photographic portrait, taken in a six-week period during May and June 2020, focussed on three core themes - Helpers and Heroes, Your New Normal and Acts of Kindness. From these, a panel of judges selected 100 portraits, assessing the images on the emotions and experiences they conveyed. Featured here in this publication, the final 100 images present a unique and highly personal record of this extraordinary period in our history of people of all ages from across the nation. From virtual birthday parties, handmade rainbows and community clapping to brave NHS staff, resilient keyworkers and people dealing with illness, isolation and loss. The images convey humour and grief, creativity and kindness, tragedy and hope - expressing and exploring both our shared and individual experiences. Presenting a true portrait of our nation in 2020, this publication includes a foreword by The Duchess of Cambridge, each image is accompanied by the story behind the picture told through the words of the entrants, and further works show the nationwide outdoor exhibition of Hold Still.
When northern Kenyans find elephant bones, they lay down blossoms and branches as a mark of respect, honouring their crucial connection with the wildlife they live alongside. In our changing world, these values are vitally important. For decades, northern Kenya was one step away from a warzone, on the frontlines of climate change and habitat loss. People slept with their shoes on, fearing attack. Wildlife was decimated. Yet, facing the most extreme challenges, people united. What began as a last-ditch effort to save rhinos from extinction sparked a remarkable return of wildlife, with the once-struggling cattle ranch Lewa named a UN World Heritage Site for its outstanding value to humanity. This served as a catalyst for much broader action. Communities created a network of protected lands across an area larger than Switzerland. Through conservation, they built peace, driving social, environmental and political change. From tracking elephants through the bush to gun battles with bandits and treks through Al-Qaeda territory, Peter Martell tells the exciting story of a conservation movement that gives hope. At a time when humanity is reassessing its broken relationship with nature, these communities offer an inspirational blueprint, proving that environmental change does not have to divide, but can bring us together.

In the mid-nineteenth century, a royal commission was appointed to investigate 'the state, discipline, studies, and revenues' of Cambridge University, and eventually recommended radical reforms. As part of its brief, it gathered records that had been preserved for centuries as the university evolved. Published in three volumes in 1852 under the title Documents Relating to the University and Colleges of Cambridge, the compilation, much of it in its original Latin, charts the university's emergence as one of the world's leading academic institutions and the challenges it faced along the way. This material remains a valuable resource for historians of British education and society. Volume 1 covers the period to the mid-sixteenth century and contains, among other historical gems, an abstract of records spanning nine monarchies, and an earlier compilation ordered by Henry VIII in the 37th year of his reign.
This report of the influential Royal Commission was first published in 1852. It resulted from a thorough inquiry 'into the State, Discipline, Studies, and Revenues of the University and Colleges of Cambridge' overseen by distinguished Victorian figures including the Bishop of Chester, George Peacock, Sir John F. W. Herschel, Sir John Romilly and Adam Sedgwick. It includes details relating to the foundation and constitution of the University; employed positions, from Chancellor to Senate members; academic degrees offered; professorships and faculty boards; financial particulars, such as tuition fees, fellowships, and revenues; and facilities, including colleges, laboratories, museums, libraries, hostels and the University Press. This comprehensive account of the material and human assets of the University of Cambridge during the nineteenth century sheds light on the educational reforms which were then gathering pace. It will be of interest to social and economic historians of the Victorian period, and of the university.

'Bowie, Cambo & All the Hype' traces the extraordinary and pivotal friendship between David Bowie and drummer John Cambridge, from the time when Bowie made his first major career breakthrough in 1969 to his death from cancer in 2016. John 'Cambo' Cambridge lived with Bowie at Haddon Hall when he had his first hit record 'Space Oddity' and toured with him in Junior's Eyes. He was there when Bowie lost his father, passed his driving test and played his first Glam Rock gig with Hype, even acting as best man when Bowie married Angela Barnett in 1970. And if John had not persuaded his former Rats colleague Mick Ronson to join Bowie in February 1970, there might never have been a Ziggy Stardust or the stellar career which followed. In this book we get a backstage pass to meet the key people and witness the events of those crucial times in a funny, moving, story of a unique friendship that survived the Hype.

Madame Fi Fi's Farewell opens with some lively, affecting poems of love and relationships in a variety of voices: an old man wistfully regrets lost opportunities; Madame Fi Fi decides it is time, somewhat ruefully, to hang up her whip; a lovelorn woman speaks of her unsatisfactory night with a youth from Aruba; and, 'In the Supermarket', a man and a woman encounter one another after a gap of twenty years. The book also includes poems rooted in the specific soils of Ayrshire and Orkney, where old country characters, primary schoolchildren, and exasperated bus drivers make their voices heard. This is a book of poems to read and re-read, quietly to yourself or - as good poetry of any age deserves - out loud.

This text provides an account of the relationship between successive British governments and the profession of initial teacher training since the 1960s. In the 1970s, the Robbins Report led to the introduction of a curriculum which both structurally and substantively represented the ideology of the day: social democracy. More recent government initiatives have re-created training in market image.; Currently, this relationship is seen as one-sided, the government apparently dominating the curriculum through a series of legislative measures. The author, however, suggests that a long-term view of this relationship may reveal a different picture - that the relationship is interactive and beneficial to both sides, and can therefore be regarded as a dialogue.
This work explores the many uses of autobiography, from historical projects which are often about retrieval and reclamation of previously hidden or misrepresented texts, to the contemporary projects of claiming a voice, and the gathering of personal testimony for educational and ideological purposes.;The volume addresses uses such as life histories, adult learning and identity, exploring issues of race, class and gender within these contexts. Each contributor looks critically and politically at the ways in which we use and might use autobiography and reveals how autobiography is not just about a private life - it can tell us much about our social and political position.
