* State-of-the-art examination of the theory and practice of system innovation* Introduces the concept of PSS innovation and outlines the characteristics* Examines a wide range of potential research directions on sustainable PSS design* Valuable resource for design students, teachers and practicing designersThis book is a state-of-the-art examination of the theory and practice of system innovation through Product-Service System (PSS) design for sustainability from a trans-cultural viewpoint. PSS design incorporates innovative strategies that shift businesses away from designing and selling physical products to developing integrated systems of products and services. The book provides background, advice and tools for designers and design students interested in sustainable PSSs and has a wealth of case studies for practitioners to digest. The first part of the book introduces the concept of PSS innovation, outlining the characteristics and features of such innovation, how different types of PSS can be classified, and which are the related benefits, drivers and barriers. It argues that such innovation has the capability to potentially bring radical reductions in the current levels of resource consumption, without minimizing consumer levels of satisfaction. The second part of the book examines a wide range of potential research directions on sustainable PSS design including: Sustainable PSS in different socio-economic contexts (industrialized, emerging and low income) Sustainable PSS in different organizational bodies (companies, public administrations, NGOs) Sustainable PSS and consumption patterns Sustainable PSS and social innovations Sustainable PSS and aesthetics Sustainable PSS and distributed economies Sustainable PSS and social enterprises Sustainable PSS and socio-technical transitions Sustainable PSS and the sufficiency economy: combining efficiency with sufficiencyThis book is the outcome of the LeNS, the Learning Network on Sustainability, a project funded by the Asia Link Programme, EuropAid, European Commission, for curricula development and teaching diffusion in worldwide design Higher Education Institutions. It is a hugely important teaching resource for undergraduate, graduate and PhD design students, design teachers and practicing designers worldwide."

Sustainable consumption and production (SCP) was adopted as a priority area during the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002 and has since become one of the main vehicles for targeting international sustainability policy. Sustainable consumption focuses on formulating equitable strategies that foster the highest quality of life, the efficient use of natural resources, and the effective satisfaction of human needs while simultaneously promoting equitable social development, economic competitiveness, and technological innovation. But this is a complex topic and, as the challenges of sustainability grow larger, there is a need to re-imagine how SCP policies can be formulated, governed and implemented. The EU-funded project "Sustainable Consumption Research Exchanges" (SCORE!) consists of around 200 experts in the field of sustainable innovation and sustainable consumption. The SCORE! philosophy is that innovation in SCP policy can be achieved only if experts that understand business development, (sustainable) solution design, consumer behaviour and system innovation policy work together in shaping it. Sustainable technology design can be effective only if business can profitably make the products and consumers are attracted to them. To understand how this might effectively happen, the expertise of systems thinkers must be added to the mix. System Innovation for Sustainability 1 is the first result of a unique positive confrontation between experts from all four communities. It examines what SCP is and what it could be, provides a state-of-the-art review on the governance of change in SCP policy and looks at the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches. The SCORE! experts are working with actors in industry, consumer groups and eco-labelling organisations in the key consumption areas of mobility, food and agriculture, and energy use and housing - responsible for 70% of the life-cycle environmental impacts of Western societies - with the aim of stimulating, fostering or forcing change to SCP theory in practice. The System Innovation for Sustainability series will continue with three further volumes of comprehensive case studies in each of these three critical consumption areas. Each chapter of this book examines problems and suggests solutions from a business, design, consumer and system innovation perspective. It primarily examines the differing solutions necessary in the consumer economies of the West, but also comments on the differing needs in rapidly emerging economies such as China, as well as base-of-the-pyramid economies. The System Innovation for Sustainability series is the fruit of the only major international research network on SCP and will set the standard in this field for some years to come. It will be required reading for all involved in the policy debate on sustainable production and consumption from government, business, academia and NGOs for designers, scientists, businesses and system innovators.

Designing Sustainable Energy for All - Sustainable Product-Service System Design Applied to Distributed Renewable Energy... Designing Sustainable Energy for All - Sustainable Product-Service System Design Applied to Distributed Renewable Energy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Carlo Vezzoli, Fabrizio Ceschin, Lilac Osanjo, Mugendi K. M'Rithaa, Richie Moalosi, …
R1,798 Discovery Miles 17 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This open access book addresses the issue of diffusing sustainable energy access in low- and middle-income contexts. Access to energy is one of the greatest challenges for many people living in low- income and developing contexts, as around 1.4 billion people lack access to electricity. Distributed Renewable Energy systems (DRE) are considered a promising approach to address this challenge and provide energy access to all. However, even if promising, the implementation of DRE systems is not always straightforward. The book analyses, discusses and classifies the promising Sustainable Product-Service System (S.PSS) business models to deliver Distributed Renewable Energy systems in an effective, efficient and sustainable way. Its message is supported with cases studies and examples, discussing the economic, environmental and socioethical benefits as well as its limitations and barriers to its implementation. An innovative design approach is proposed and a set of design tools are supplied, enabling readers to create and develop Sustainable Product-Service System (S.PSS) solutions to deliver Distributed Renewable Energy systems. Practical applications of the book's design approach and tools by companies and practitioners are discussed and the book will be of interest to readers in design, industry, governmental institutions, NGOs as well as researchers.

Designing Sustainability for All - The Design of Sustainable Product-Service Systems Applied to Distributed Economies... Designing Sustainability for All - The Design of Sustainable Product-Service Systems Applied to Distributed Economies (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Carlo Vezzoli, Brenda Garcia Parra, Cindy Kohtala
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This open access book introduces design for Sustainable Product-Service Systems (S.PSS) and for Sustainable Distributed Economies (S.DE). These are introduced as technical and operative tools for the development of a new generation of designers, responsible and capable of designing environmentally, socially and economically sustainable solutions, accessible to all. The book provides a comprehensive framework and also practical tools to support the system design for sustainability process. It overviews methodologies, tools and strategies for Sustainable PSS design applied to Distributed Economies (DE) and provides strategies and design guidelines. All of these are highlighted and expanded upon with international case studies.
